Analysis Of Differential Gene Expression In Androgen-Independent Clones Derived From The Mycap Pca Cell Line, Jessie L. Tignor, Melanie Sinanian, Richard Inho Joh, David Gewirtz, Jason Reed Jan 2025

Analysis Of Differential Gene Expression In Androgen-Independent Clones Derived From The Mycap Pca Cell Line, Jessie L. Tignor, Melanie Sinanian, Richard Inho Joh, David Gewirtz, Jason Reed

UROP Posters

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a primary treatment strategy for prostate cancer (PCa), yet many tumors eventually develop androgen independence, leading to treatment resistance. To investigate the molecular changes underlying this transition, we analyzed differential gene expression in four androgen-independent (AI) clones derived from the Myc-CaP prostate cancer cell line using RNA sequencing. Gene expression profiles were compared to the parental Myc-CaP line, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using DESeq2 and edgeR. The AI clones exhibited significant downregulation of senescence-associated genes, including Ezh2 and lamin B1, suggesting a loss of senescence-related chromatin repression. Additionally, upregulation of Wnt pathway …

Still Faces, Different Places: An Assessment Of The Literature On The Face-To-Face Still Face Procedure For Cultural Congruence, Merilyn Arikkat, Leslie B. Lantz, Patricia Kinser Jan 2025

Still Faces, Different Places: An Assessment Of The Literature On The Face-To-Face Still Face Procedure For Cultural Congruence, Merilyn Arikkat, Leslie B. Lantz, Patricia Kinser

UROP Posters

Cultural understanding is a factor that impacts reliability of research results for observational studies. It is important to include participants of minority groups in research, as many people of color face disproportionate challenges in terms of healthcare access and resources. Within the context of mother-infant attachment, a technique known as the Face-to-Face Still Face procedure can be utilized to observe attachment styles and the bond between a parent and their infant. In order to combat subjectivity within the coding process for this Face-to-Face Still Face procedure, cultural congruence between the participants being observed in the study and the coding researchers …

A Call For Integration Of Trauma-Informed Care Into Occupational Therapy: Improving Provider Competency Through A Case Study Of A Cooking Skills Program For Survivors Of Human Trafficking, Natalie Pravinkumar Jan 2025

A Call For Integration Of Trauma-Informed Care Into Occupational Therapy: Improving Provider Competency Through A Case Study Of A Cooking Skills Program For Survivors Of Human Trafficking, Natalie Pravinkumar

OT Doctoral Capstones

Trauma, such as abuse, neglect, and violence, has evident lasting physical and mental health effects, such as chronic illness, behavioral changes, and depression. While trauma-informed care (TIC) helps providers recognize and respond to trauma, this training is often limited to mental health and social work fields. Many survivor populations never receive interventions designed with TIC in mind, restricting outcomes leading to reduced rehabilitation and reintegration.

Occupational therapy (OT) is fundamentally client-centered and functional, making it well suited for TIC. However, while they cover many similar topics, most OT programs do not include specific curriculum on TIC.

TIC education in OT …

Caring For Caregivers: An Occupational Therapy-Centered Mental Health And Wellness Program, Natalie Burgess Jan 2025

Caring For Caregivers: An Occupational Therapy-Centered Mental Health And Wellness Program, Natalie Burgess

OT Doctoral Capstones

Objective: Address the mental health and wellness needs of caregivers of individuals with disabilities at Fundación Integra A.C.

Methods: Conducted a needs assessment, developed and implemented an 8-week occupational therapy-based wellness program, and evaluated outcomes using pre/post assessments and weekly feedback surveys.

Results: Caregivers showed reduced stress, improved self-reported health, and increased use of mindfulness and coping strategies.

Conclusion: Occupational therapy interventions can improve caregiver well-being and support sustainable caregiver education in community settings.

Pearls For Surgical Dermatology: Common Sense Solutions For Common Problems, Richard Maxwell Regester, Amy Cannella Md, Ms, Rhmsus, Wesley Chong, Ally Glaser, Amy Rau, Anthony J. Griess Md Jan 2025

Pearls For Surgical Dermatology: Common Sense Solutions For Common Problems, Richard Maxwell Regester, Amy Cannella Md, Ms, Rhmsus, Wesley Chong, Ally Glaser, Amy Rau, Anthony J. Griess Md

EMET Projects

Introduction:
Efficiency and precision in surgical dermatology are crucial for optimizing patient outcomes and procedural success. This study presents a collection of practical surgical pearls designed to address common challenges encountered in dermatologic surgery. By implementing these streamlined techniques, practitioners can improve hemostasis, enhance visualization, and reduce surgical tension while maintaining favorable cosmetic results.

Methods & Key Techniques:
Several surgical pearls were compiled based on clinical experience and literature review. Key strategies include:

  • Forceps-Assisted Cautery for Hemostasis: A technique that enhances efficiency by directing electrical current through forceps to neutralize bleeding vessels without additional clamps or sutures.
  • Nasal Ala Hemostasis …

A Potentially Cat-Astrophic Missed Diagnosis: Systemic Autoimmune Disease Or Something More Sinister, Cameron Smith, Do, Mph, Amy Dechet

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Introduction: Disseminated bartonella infection has a mortality rate approaching 10%. Clinical presentation of bartonellosis can mimic systemic autoimmune disease. Traditional testing may not identify the organism, so a high degree of suspicion is warranted in patients with risk factors. Case Presentation: 32M with history of Tetralogy of Fallot with prosthetic pulmonary valve presented with fatigue x3 months. Reported severe splenomegaly, pancytopenia requiring transfusions, and renal failure requiring hemodialysis. Given concern for lupus-like syndrome, treated with steroids + cyclophosphamide. Persistent fevers despite broad antibiotics. Second opinion of renal biopsy: Postinfectious GN. Immunostains ruled out lupus-like disorder. Negative blood cultures, TEE, and …
