René Dubos: An Annotated Bibliography

René Dubos (1901–1982), a prominent 20th century scientist, humanist, and philosopher, was a prolific author. Affiliated for more than 50 years with The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research/The Rockefeller University, his studies ranged from antibiotics and the role of bacteria in human diseases to formulating broad ecological and environmental questions affecting human health and disease. His seminal writings explore a lifelong belief that a living organism—whether microbe, human being, society, or the Earth itself—could be understood only through its relationships with everything else.

Background: Oral nicotine pouch (ONP) use is rising. The sales of ONPs in 2019 were 126 million units, increasing to 808 million units in 2022. Understanding ONP in vitro release is critical for assessing exposure to ONP products.

Methods: The commercial brand ON! ONPs with nicotine label claims of 2, 4, and 8 mg, were evaluated in vitro for cumulative nicotine release using the bidirectional transmucosal apparatus (BTA) for 90 minutes. Nicotine quantification was performed by HPLC-PDA. For pH determination, ONP samples were prepared in water or artificial saliva (pH 6.8) with measurements for 30 minutes. This poster provides detail of the radiation doses patients are exposed to in computed tomography (CT). CT helps give radiologists a more detailed image of patients. With CT first coming in the United States in the 1970s the usage has increased every decade. Presently over 100 million CT examinations are done annually. With increased usage some patients are being overexposed by scanners. A study done in the late 2000s found patients received up to eight times the radiation needed. Objective: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most common elective orthopaedic surgeries. In addition, there are rising rates of obesity and diabetes and, with it, medications to treat them. This retrospective cross-sectional analysis aims to examine the outcomes of patients who underwent TKA and were on a Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist (GLP-1a) at the time of surgery Methods: This study analyzes a database using CPT and ICD-10 codes to identify patients having primary TKA for knee osteoarthritis. Leiomyomas are benign, well-circumscribed, monoclonal smooth muscle tumors. While leiomyoma of the uterus are exceedingly common, soft tissue leiomyomas are rare and often misdiagnosed. While excisional therapy is the mainstay of treatment, wide vulvar excisions can cause significant discomfort and disfigurement of the vulva. Here we present a unique case of a vulvar hematoma excision complicated by hematoma formation. A 39-year-old female presented to the ambulatory gynecology clinic with a 4-month history of an enlarging vulvar mass. On exam, a 4-cm mass was seen arising from the right upper labium. Office biopsy showed a well-circumscribed spindle cell lesion without nuclear …

8,500 crossings happen on 800 North every day. In Provo last year, 57 car crashes involved pedestrians. A pedestrian’s view of the road is obstructed by cars parked on the right hand side of the road causing them to walk in the crosswalk to see if there is a car coming. Sidewalks on connecting streets are uneven and cracked. Multiple blocks on 800 North without a stop sign to slow drivers down. Currently no posted speed limit signs on 800 North. Students Obtaining Tools to Achieve Regulation (SOAR) is a doctoral capstone project that addressed the need for integrated social emotional learning (SEL) in elementary education. SEL is an evidence-based approach shown to improve academic outcomes, behavior, and long-term life success, yet implementation barriers remain in school settings. This project aimed to enhance student regulation, classroom engagement, and teacher confidence in SEL techniques through a multi-tiered approach. A scoping review of SEL literature identified the implementation methods and barriers to SEL curricula in elementary education, which informed the development of SOAR. “Meaning Within the Lines” was a doctoral capstone project developed to improve children’s handwriting through program development, education, and advocacy. Through an occupational therapy handwriting program at Misericordia University, local children struggling with handwriting received pro-bono occupational therapy services that improved their overall handwriting skills, using the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum and manipulatives. This project also advanced the knowledge of undergraduate occupational therapy students' through observation of OT sessions. Education workshop opportunities increased underclassman knowledge in handwriting development and provided resources that they can use for their future practice.
