Mission:

To collect and report complete, high-quality, and timely population-based cancer data in Louisiana to support cancer research, control, and prevention.

Vision:

To reduce suffering and death from cancer using information collected by the Louisiana Tumor Registry.

History:

Cancer registration in Louisiana began in 1947 at the Charity Hospital Tumor Registry in New Orleans. In 1974, as part of its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, the National Cancer Institute provided funds for a population-based cancer incidence and survival registry covering Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes. Five years later, the Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR) was transferred to the …

Trends In Retail And Urgent Care Clinics In Nebraska, Jim P. Stimpson, Marlene Deras Oct 2013

Trends In Retail And Urgent Care Clinics In Nebraska, Jim P. Stimpson, Marlene Deras

Reports: Center for Health Policy

There is considerable interest nationwide in the growth of retail clinics (kiosks located inside a retail store, supermarket, or pharmacy that treat simple illnesses and provide preventive care services) and urgent care clinics (walk-in clinics that treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate attention). These clinics have the potential to improve access to healthcare by providing more convenient care and transparent prices (compared to a typical physician office visit). This brief describes the trend in the number of retail and urgent care clinics in Nebraska. We found a 40% increase in the number of urgent care clinics from 2008 to 2013, …

Crime And Public Health: Interdisciplinary Approach To Education, Karen Miner-Romanoff, Leslie J. King Sep 2013

Crime And Public Health: Interdisciplinary Approach To Education, Karen Miner-Romanoff, Leslie J. King

Scholarship Forum 2013

Dr. Karen Miner-Romanoff and Dr. Leslie King state that although crime rates have decreased in the last several years, they remain alarmingly high. Recidivism rates, in the meantime, continue to rise with up to half of all new prison inmates incarcerated for reoffending after their initial release (Matz, et al., 2012). As the costs of a failed criminal justice system becomes unsustainable, scholars search for new evidence-based, innovative and collaborative solutions to lower crime and increased public health and safety. As a result of this collaboration, some criminal justice and public health leaders are seeking to develop new theoretical and …

Beyond Codes: Translating Genetics To Nursing Practice, Rachel Choudhury Sep 2013

Beyond Codes: Translating Genetics To Nursing Practice, Rachel Choudhury

Scholarship Forum 2013

Genetics in nursing practice has moved beyond the study of genes and heredity and now includes genomics, which considers both genetic and environmental causes of diseases across the lifespan. The National Coalition of Health Professionals in Genetic Education (NCHPEG) developed core competence frameworks required of nurses in the area of genetics and genomics. This shift in nursing practice has potential implications for baccalaureate-prepared nurses to have the foundation in genetic and genomic knowledge and skills. Nursing research studies have shown that a link exists between self-efficacy and acquisition of competencies. These studies also suggest that enhancing nursing student’s self-efficacy can …

Advanced Technologies: Health Care Anytime... Anywhere?, Danielle Hart, John Pilutti, Leslie J. King

Scholarship Forum 2013

Advanced technology in the medical profession has had a significant impact on the access, efficiency, and cost of health care delivery services over the past decade. Technological advancements in the medical profession can be bucketed into two main categories: mobile and biological/physiological. Some examples of mobile technology include web apps that can monitor a patient’s vital signs remotely and mobile phone attachments that can provide medical imaging data for doctors in the most remote areas of the globe. Remote patient monitoring and the use of mobile health apps to deliver timely, useful information to the patient about their health decision …

Anti-Chaperone Activity And Cytotoxicity Of Chemical Components In Copaiba Oil, Daniel Kulman, Janine Naim, Bin Su Ph.D. Sep 2013

Anti-Chaperone Activity And Cytotoxicity Of Chemical Components In Copaiba Oil, Daniel Kulman, Janine Naim, Bin Su Ph.D.

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

Copaiba oil derived from the oleoresin of the Copaiba tree has been widely used as an antiseptic and expectorant for the respiratory tract, and as anti-inflammatory agent in various skin diseases. Studies have indicated that Copaiba oil exhibited anti-carcinogenic properties in various preclinical studies. However, the anti-cancer mechanisms of copaiba oil still remain unclear. There are various diterpenoid compounds within Copaiba oil, which also make the mechanism investigation very difficult. Hardwickiic acid (HAA), a clerodane diterpenoid isolated from Copaiba oil shows anti-chaperone activity from a recent study. In the current study, cytotoxicity and anti-chaperone assay guided isolation led to 9 …

Conceptualization And Design Of A Surface Translation Balance Training Device, Annie Djukic, Omri Tayyara, Deborah Espy, Majid Rashidi Sep 2013

Conceptualization And Design Of A Surface Translation Balance Training Device, Annie Djukic, Omri Tayyara, Deborah Espy, Majid Rashidi

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

Research supports the idea that dynamic control of both a person's center of mass and base of support are necessary to prevent falls, and that older adults can learn this combined control through specific balance training. Effective balance training requires a large number of repetitions of task-specific practice. Externally induced movements have been employed in balance studies both to test and train balance responses, most often using mechanized surface perturbations. These systems however are quite expensive; therefore, we chose to investigate a more cost effective solution focusing on surface translation for balance training in our lab.

We performed a literature …

Controlling The Size And Shape Of Polypeptide Colloidal Particles: Temperature Dependence Of Particle Formation, John P. Gavin, Nolan B. Holland, Kiril A. Streletzky Sep 2013

Controlling The Size And Shape Of Polypeptide Colloidal Particles: Temperature Dependence Of Particle Formation, John P. Gavin, Nolan B. Holland, Kiril A. Streletzky

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

A promising approach for developing new drug delivery vehicles is by using stimuli responsive hydrogel nanoparticles. Polypeptide surfactants designed in our lab have been shown to form micellar particles of varying sizes and shapes depending on the solution salt concentration. These responsive polypeptide surfactants consist of a small charged protein domain (foldon) with three elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) chains forming a three-armed star polymer. The size and shape of the micelles they form is dependent on the ratio of total ELP volume to head group area. By introducing linear ELP into the ELP-foldon solution, the total volume of ELP in the …
