The Qualitative Report Books

Edward Bliss Emerson (1805-1834), a younger brother of the renowned essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, lived in the Caribbean for the final three years of his life. His journal and letters are a rich manuscript source for the history of the Danish Virgin Islands (1831-1832) and Puerto Rico (1831-1834). The texts also reflect the contemporary political and cultural situation in the United States, and Edward's search for health, economic independence, intellectual stimulation and metaphysical fulfillment.

These writings ignited an intellectual passion in José G. Rigau-Pérez, a physician, medical epidemiologist, and historian in Puerto Rico. Furthering access to these unique …

Latinos' Health Perceptions: A Cross-Cultural Analyisis, Elizabeth Pappenfus Apr 2014

Latinos' Health Perceptions: A Cross-Cultural Analyisis, Elizabeth Pappenfus

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2014

The purpose of my study is to examine how Latinos’ cultural health beliefs impact their illness behaviors in a rural setting in comparison to White individuals. Illness behavior is defined as the manner in which a person monitors their body, interprets their symptoms, and their reactions to those symptoms. Although Latino immigrants suffer from higher rates of treatable diseases, they are largely underutilizing the healthcare system in the U.S. The Andersen model of healthcare utilization is the most commonly used model for predicting utilization based on the person's environment (i.e. healthcare system) and personal characteristics (i.e. personal need, available resources, …

Introducing Blended Learning To Medical Students In A Clinical Training Environment, Erik Langenau, Douglas Koch Apr 2014

Introducing Blended Learning To Medical Students In A Clinical Training Environment, Erik Langenau, Douglas Koch

Scholarly Posters

Third year medical students typically learn through supervised patient interaction in a clinical setting, often based in academic or hospital-based training sites. As one of the five medical schools in the Philadelphia area, PCOM strives to find the best training sties for its students in a number of specialties. Due to the increasing number of students in the region as well as a decreasing number of available training sites (as a result of reduced hospitalization rates and lengths of stay), finding suitable training sites for students has been a challenge. In order to better meet the academic needs of our …

The Cancer Care Workforce In Nebraska, Aastha Chandak, Fausto R. Loberiza Jr., Marlene Deras, James O. Armitage, Julie M. Vose, Jim P. Stimpson Apr 2014

The Cancer Care Workforce In Nebraska, Aastha Chandak, Fausto R. Loberiza Jr., Marlene Deras, James O. Armitage, Julie M. Vose, Jim P. Stimpson

Reports: Center for Health Policy

Although cancer is the leading cause of death in Nebraska, the adequacy of Nebraska’s cancer care workforce to care for the cancer population is unknown. Therefore, we used workforce survey data for 2008-2012 from the Health Professions Tracking Service to analyze the cancer care workforce supply in Nebraska. We found that from 2008 to 2012, the cancer care workforce for adults outpaced cancer prevalence. We outline several policy options to improve Nebraska’s cancer care workforce capacity, and we consider the effect the Affordable Care Act may have on Nebraska’s cancer care workforce
