  • Innovations Decrease Toxic Effects of Radiation Therapy for Mediastinal Tumors from Hematological Malignancies: Anterior mediastinal masses caused by lymphoma or leukemia can be difficult to treat because sensitive tissues in the area are vulnerable to damage from radiation therapy. To treat these tumors while sparing healthy tissue, radiation oncologists at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center use a combination of advanced technologies and new techniques.
  • Transoral Robotic Surgery Enables Less Toxic Treatment of Early Throat Cancers: For decades, many patients with hard-to-reach throat cancers received high-dose radiation and chemotherapy, with their often severe toxic effects, because conventional surgery …

Methemoglobinemia In Acetaminophen Overdose And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Maelen Ignacio, Pharmd, Colin Craft, Md, Fern M. Martin, Md, Cara Mcdaniel, Pharmd, Bcps

College of Pharmacy Posters

Background:

  • Methemoglobin (MetHb) is formed when the iron moiety of hemoglobin (Hgb) is oxidized from ferrous (Fe2+) to ferric (Fe3+) state à impaired O2 delivery to tissues
  • Acetaminophen Metabolism:

~90% is metabolized in liver via sulfation and glucuronidation

remainder is metabolized via CYP450 to a toxic oxidizing agent, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), which is detoxified via glutathione1

  • Acute Acetaminophen Overdose:

saturates sulfation and glucuronidation pathways

depletes glutathione stores

leads to excess NAPQI à oxidative stress à methemoglobinemia1

  • MetHb Reduction Pathway:

cytochrome b5 reductase removes 95% to 99% of endogenous MetHb

nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate …

Case Description:

  • A 36-year-old man presented with a large epidural collection, shown on MRI to extend from C1-S5 and resulting in spinal canal narrowing (Figures 1-3). The patient was admitted for acute inpatient rehabilitation after neurosurgical treatment and stabilization s/p C7-T1, T7-8, L4-5 laminectomies.
  • He presented with impaired mobility and activities of daily living, and reported moderate pain in the back and lower extremities, but without specific distribution, during PT/OT therapies.
  • Throughout his 7-day length of stay, the patient was closely monitored for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus bacteremia, and he received IV oxacillin and oral rifampin. Active medical problems …

Ms. Highsmith graduated in 1986 and over the years worked mostly in maternal care but also in psychology. Among other positions, she worked for ten years at Pennsylvania Hospital where she founded STEPS, Strategies to Encourage Parental Self-Sufficiency, a teen pregnancy clinic, and worked as a home visitor for Mercy Home Health educating new moms about postpartum care. Since 2002 she has worked for Nurse Family …

Effects Of High Intensity Exercise On Central Neural Drive In Healthy Populations, Nicholas Legrand, Spt, Kyra Robb, Spt, Emily Slobodian, Spt, Nicole Weaknecht, Spt, Megan Wood, Spt, Stephanie Muth, Pt, Phd Feb 2016

Effects Of High Intensity Exercise On Central Neural Drive In Healthy Populations, Nicholas Legrand, Spt, Kyra Robb, Spt, Emily Slobodian, Spt, Nicole Weaknecht, Spt, Megan Wood, Spt, Stephanie Muth, Pt, Phd

Department of Physical Therapy Capstone Posters

Background:

Current research suggests that strength gains related to central neural adaptation occur more rapidly than peripheral mechanisms5. Central neural drive (CND) is the measure of cortical output that coordinates up-regulation of agonist contraction and inhibition of antagonist musculature in voluntary muscle contractions2. Two common techniques for measuring CND are twitch interpolation and motor evoked potential from transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Department of Physical Therapy Capstone Posters

Purpose and Background:

Recent research has begun to focus on foot strike patterns as they relate to injuries in runners. Runners who employ a rear-foot strike (RFS) pattern (in which the heel lands before the ball of the foot) are more likely to experience repetitive stress injuries such as tibial stress fractures, patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), and plantar fasciitis. Conversely, runners demonstrating a forefoot strike (FFS) pattern (defined as the ball of the foot-usually the 4th and 5th metatarsal heads-landing before the heel) are more susceptible to Achilles tendon, plantarflexor, and metatarsal injuries. Several systematic studies have concluded that barefoot …

Background:

Dual kidney transplantation (DKT) of expanded criteria donors is a cost intensive procedure to help increase the pool of available deceased organ donors. In studies to day, expanded criteria single kidney (eSKT) or dual kidney transplantation (DKT) have demonstrated equivalence, but a more rigorous allocation system is needed to optimize limited resources for improved operative outcomes.
