Background: Simulation-based learning is a popular training method in healthcare education. Literature supports multiple aspects of simulation-based training for technical skills and behavioral skills, however the effects of different pedagogies have not been investigated in this educational method.

Objective: Examine the effects of guided mentorship during simulation on pediatric residents’ learning experience.

Shoulder Instability Surgical Techniques, Spencer Rotter

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2018

Anterior shoulder instability is a common problem in the athletic population. Treatment for this problem typically involves rehabilitation and if instability continues surgical repair to stabilize the joint. The technique that is used is controversial. Focused Clinical Question: In patients with anterior shoulder instability what is the effectiveness of the Bristow Latarjet coracoid bone block compared to capsular shift with suture anchors on the recurrence of dislocation? Search strategy:The search for research studies began on PubMed, CINAHL Plus, and Pro-Quest Nursing. The search terms included anterior shoulder instability, surgical techniques, treatments. With these search terms brought up about 250 studies. …

A Week Devoted To Wellness In The Preclinical Phase: Lessons Learned, Nethra S. Ankam, Md

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Posters

Background

During the 2017-2018 academic year, a large private medical college underwent a complete transformation of its curriculum from a primarily lecture based, traditional format to an integrated, longitudinal format that included both time limited blocks and longitudinal threads of content. Wellness, conceptualized at both wellness of the provider and the patient, is one of the eight threads.

Goals

  • Provide a structured pause in medical school for you to reflect on your own wellness
  • Allow time to explore the ideas of resilience
  • Provide time for rejuvenation
  • Allow you to start building productive habits to last you throughout your entire medical …

Function-Based Comparison Of Bracing And Taping On Lateral Ankle Sprains, Payton Lindsey

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2018

Lateral ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries associated with athletes. Based on the current evidence, external support has been found to be one of the most effective preventative measures for ankle injuries alongside neuromuscular training.Focused Clinical Question: The purpose of this review was to find the difference in effects between taping and bracing for the treatment of lateral ankle sprains when focusing of functionality using the Karlsson score or its components. Search Strategy:Participants were included if they were between the ages of 16 and 65, and reported with a history of an isolated lateral ankle sprain within …

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2018

West-Nile virus (WNV) is an arbovirus usually transmitted to humans via a mosquito vector. Infections commonly result in febrile symptoms while rare severe neuroinvasive cases may result in encephalitis or meningitis. Studies have shown that WNV infection efficiency is enhanced by expression of DC-SIGNR on target cells, which normally do not express DC-SIGNR. To investigate WNV tropism, we established 293T kidney epithelial cell lines that stably express vector, DC-SIGNR and mutants of DC-SIGNR that lack the entire carbohydrate-recognition domain (CRD) or lack the C-terminal half of the CRD. We demonstrate successful surface expression of DC-SIGNR and its mutants from stablytransfected …

Drug Abuse Manifesting As Persistent Hypoglycemia: A Case Report Of Hidden Sulfonylurea Poisoning, Frederick B. Peng, Sharon Li, Md

Department of Medicine Posters

Background

  • Prescription drug abuse is on the rise. According to the Philadelphia Department of Health data in 2017, up to 26% of adults may be using benzodiazepines and/or opioids (Table 1).
  • 12% or 1/8 Philadelphians are estimated to be current benzodiazepine users and have taken one in the last 7 days. Benzodiazepine use is most common among people with household incomes below $25,000 and among the 45-54 years old age group (17.7%) [1].
  • Most current users (84%) obtain benzodiazepines from health care providers [1]. However, with new policies to closely monitor controlled substances, those with dependence on benzodiazepines may turn …

Research Of White Sucker Cell Lines And Associated Viruses, Mohamed Mohamed, Casey M. Finnerty Apr 2018

Research Of White Sucker Cell Lines And Associated Viruses, Mohamed Mohamed, Casey M. Finnerty

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2018

Catostomus commersonii, also known as the White Sucker, is a vital part of most aquatic ecosystems in the U.S. Specifically looking at the Upper Midwest, these fish are widely distributed around the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The importance of these organisms is due to their species reputation, they are indicator species that are very useful in informing whether the environment around them is healthy or if contamination has occurred. To better understand the organism, we needed to start at the molecular level. Understanding the nature of White Sucker cells through cell cultures. To get the individual fins of the …

College of Nursing Posters

Concept-based curricula are being implemented in nursing education as a means to shift the emphasis from content to an emphasis on concepts and conceptual learning (Giddens & Brady, 2007). This paradigm shift requires concomitant changes in how faculty teach and how students learn. In concept-based curricula, teachers use student-centered learning activities, such as case studies, questions, or problems to engage students in active learning (Giddens, Caputi, & Rodgers, 2015).

Measuring The Outcomes Of Therapeutic Listening® In Children With Learning And Developmental Disabilities, Donielle Hair, Phoebe Taasan, Hannah Tashjian, Julia L. Wilbarger

Student Research Posters

A practice-based evidence (PBE) approach was used to explore the outcomes of the Therapeutic Listening® technique. PBE examines how effective clinical practice is within the actual clinical context. PBE capitalizes on using customary procedures and measures to establish clinical outcomes. (Horn & Gassaway, 2010; Swisher, 2010).

Therapeutic Listening® (TL®) is a sound-based intervention broadly used by pediatric OTs as a complement to sensory integration interventions for children with sensory processing disorders.

Bezoar: Imaging Findings & Case Study Of A Rare Pathology, Tanya M. Custer, Kim Michael

Posters and Presentations: Medical Imaging & Therapeutic Sciences

A bezoar is a hard, indigestible mass of material that forms within the alimentary canal, most commonly the stomach.1 Bezoars are classified according to composition. The most common type of bezoar is a phytobezoar composed of indigestible food fibers that occur in fruits & vegetables, including celery, pumpkin, prunes, raisins, & sunflower-seed shells. Other common types of bezoars include trichobezoars, composed of hair, & pharmacobezoars, made of undissolved medications.

A number of risk factors have been associated with bezoar development. Patients who have undergone gastric surgery, such as partial gastrectomy, are at an increased risk of developing a bezoar due …

Coffee Consumption, Perceptions, And Patterns, Shannon Rodriguez Apr 2018

Coffee Consumption, Perceptions, And Patterns, Shannon Rodriguez

Student Research Posters

Coffee is a substance people consume daily, but there are inconclusive and conflicting results from studies about the positive and negative effects of coffee and caffeine. For example, evidence from one study links lower levels of stress with coffee consumption while another study concluded drinking coffee results in sleep disruption. Given this information, there are numerous factors that contribute to why people drink coffee and the effects it has on each individual. The purpose of this study is to see if there are patterns between demographics, coffee consumption, and perceptions to understand how students, staff, and faculty at Dominican University …
