Electronic Data Capture And Study Management, William A. Mattingly Nov 2019

Electronic Data Capture And Study Management, William A. Mattingly

Division of Infectious Diseases

Electronic Data Capture (EDC) is the process of recording data from a primary data source into a computerized system for improved reliability, security, and convenience. Data stored in EDC systems are used for analysis and, in the case of clinical studies, are an important part of the development pipeline for new drugs and medical devices. This text provides an introduction to data capture and the management of a scientific study using the popular EDC solution REDCap.

Delayed Acl Rehabilitation After Autograft Tear During Surgery: A Case Report, Rolene Yousefyan Nov 2019

Delayed Acl Rehabilitation After Autograft Tear During Surgery: A Case Report, Rolene Yousefyan

Case Report Posters

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are one of the most common knee injuries in female soccer players that require reconstruction and rehabilitation. The incidence rate of autogenous ACL reconstruction (ACLR) complications during surgery are reported as low as 0.2% to 1.7%. There is insufficient information on the most effective rehabilitation protocol for patients with complications during surgery. Many rehabilitation protocols fail to include programs for patients who have general joint laxity. No known studies have reported on the most effective treatment for a patient with generalized laxity and an autograft rupture during surgery. The purpose of this case report was …

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

Research poster addressing the question: What oral health programs in long-term care facilities improve oral health outcomes? The need for effective oral hygiene programs in long-term care (LTC) veterans facilities is crucial due to the rise in the elderly population, as well as untreated caries in older adults. As a state, Maine has 15% of older adults with untreated caries, 41% with gingivitis, 14% with periodontal diseases, and 2.7% with oral and pharyngeal cancer death rates. It would serve the residents and team of caregivers well to have an interprofessional approach to the overall care of their patients. It is …

The Role Of Periodontal Disease In Lymphatic Function, Kristen Carlisle, Hanna Marie, Haley Taylor Nov 2019

The Role Of Periodontal Disease In Lymphatic Function, Kristen Carlisle, Hanna Marie, Haley Taylor

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

Research poster addressing the question: Does periodontal disease affect lymphatic function? Gingival lymphatic vessels drain interstitial fluid and transport immune cells to lymph nodes but despite this, it is unknown how the lymphatic system impacts periodontal disease in humans. In light of this, studies have been observed on animals with the vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGFC), a growth factor known to be increased in periodontal patients. VEGFC is involved in lymphatic hyperplasia and lymphangiogenesis, the proliferation of lymphatic endothelial cells. This growth factor is believed to affect gingival lymphatic function in periodontitis patients. When reviewing the literature, it is …

An estimated thirty million men in the United States suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Recent research suggests a link between periodontal disease (PD) and other systemic conditions. The purpose of this research is to answer the following research question: Is there a relationship between PD and ED in men? A 2019 study found that patients with PD were 95% more likely to be diagnosed with ED. Studies indicate that both diseases share common risk factors, and a positive correlation between radiographic alveolar bone loss and severity of ED. Additional studies showed improved IIEF (International Index of Erectile Function) scores of …

How To Use Peanut Ige Levels To Predict Challenge Outcomes In The Pediatric Population, Nalin U.G., Jay Portnoy, Jodi Shroba, Salman Aljubran Nov 2019

How To Use Peanut Ige Levels To Predict Challenge Outcomes In The Pediatric Population, Nalin U.G., Jay Portnoy, Jodi Shroba, Salman Aljubran

Posters

Introduction: The accepted clinical practice is to consider oral challenge when peanut IgE levels are 2.0 kUA/L or less in patients with a history of a major reaction or less than 5.0 kUA/L in patients with only sensitization. Certain populations are predisposed to having increased IgE levels, and these patients are often not offered challenges due to elevated numbers.

Methods: We reviewed unidentified patients information from January 2017 to July 2019 on peanut IgE levels and oral challenge outcomes through REDCap database. A ROC using SPSS from IBM was used and the points from the ROC curve were used to …

Poem Perceptions: A Survey Of Gastroenterologists And The Treatment Of Achalasia In The Philadelphia Region, Rebecca Loh, Md, Alexander Schlachterman, Md

Department of Medicine Posters

Introduction

Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a relatively new innovate technique that has been shown to be an effective treatment for achalasia. Despite studies demonstrating its effectiveness as a less invasive therapy, POEM is still not as widely implemented as the traditional Heller myotomy for the treatment of achalasia. We aimed to explore the barriers that may impact implementation of POEM and to assess the regional perception of POEM amongst gastroenterologists in an urban setting.

Hypercalcemia Related To Ectopic Vitamin D Production From A Dysgerminoma, Iqra Iqbal, Muhammad Atique Alam Khan, Puneet Dhillon, Samavia Munir, Dina Nabwani

Abington Jefferson Health Posters

Introduction

While malignancy associated hypercalcemia is a common finding among 20% to 30% of adult patients with breast cancer, lung cancer and multiple myeloma, it happens in less than 5% of female genital tract malignancies. [1] The three most common mechanisms associated with hypercalcemia are: local osteolytic hypercalcemia, humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM) caused by the parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP), and other humoral factors including prostaglandin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), osteoclast activating factor and transforming growth factor (TGF). PTHrP and 1, 25 dihydroxy vitamin D (1, 25 Vit D) have been reported as humoral factors for dysgermininoma. [2] Humoral hypercalcemia …

Teaching Skills For Self Sufficiency: Health Management For Patients With Disabilities And Chronic Health Conditions, Teresa M. Hickam, Kathy Smith

Posters

Research shows patients who develop self-health management skills are able to translate these skills in other life domains such as higher education, social interaction and employment. Persons with chronic health conditions or disabilities often face challenges securing employment which in turn impacts self sufficiency and long-term health. The poster focuses on two programs at Children's Mercy serving as key building blocks for adolescents to manage their lives.
