Detection Of Trypanosoma Evansi In Camel Abortions (Camelus Dromedarius) In Iran Using Polymerase Chain Reaction, Mohammadreza Nazem, Maryam Karimidehkordi, Mehran Farhoodi Moghadam

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Trypanosoma evansi is a blood parasite protozoan that causes trypanosomiasis or surra in a variety of economically valued animals such as cattle and camels. This infection causes abortion in camels. The present study was conducted to evaluate the presence of Trypanosoma evansi in aborted fetuses of Iranian camels (Camelus dromedarius) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. In this study, 244 abomasal contents of aborted fetuses were collected from an Iranian camel herd in the east of Iran. The results showed that 41 of 244 (16.8%) aborted fetuses were infected with Trypanosoma evansi DNA. The results showed that a high percentage …

Neospora caninum is a major, cosmopolitan, protozoan parasite associated with abortion in cattle and water buffaloes. In this study, real-time PCR was used for the detection and quantification of the burden of N. caninum infections in aborted fetuses in the Middle Black Sea Region and Sivas Province of Turkey. In total, N. caninum DNA was detected in 44 of the 89 (49.4%) aborted fetuses of the cattle and water buffalo from 89 different farms. The authors conclude that the pervasiveness of neosporosis is a threat to cattle breeding in the Middle Black Sea Region and Sivas Province. Real-time PCR testing …

Brucella canis is defined as the specific agent that is responsible for canine brucellosis. In this study, B. canis was isolated and identified from the clinical materials belonging to 2 dogs kept in a breeding kennel in Turkey and brought to the researchers? clinic with abortion complaints. With this study, for the first time ever, B. canis isolation and identification was made from dogs that aborted in a kennel. This study emphasizes

Both cattle and dogs were examined in modern and rural dairy farms that had a history of abortion over 5%. The blood samples were collected from 427 aborted cattle and the sera were tested using a commercial ELISA test kit. Additionally, a necropsy procedure was carried out on the fetuses and calves dead within 2 months after birth; the tissue samples were evaluated by histopathologic, immunoperoxidase, and PCR techniques. Eighteen dogs in close contact with the cattle in the same field were included in the study and blood and feces samples were collected. The feces samples were analyzed by copro-PCR …

Abortions In Sheep Due To Listeria Ivanovii In The Kars Region, Mi̇that Şahi̇n, Enver Beytut

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This report describes an outbreak of Listeria ivanovii-induced abortion in sheep in the Kars region. In a flock of 120 sheep raised in Taşlıdere, a village in the region of Arpaçay, in Kars, some ewes in the last stages of gestation aborted in March, 2004. Necropsy was conducted on 5 aborted foetuses. Livers of the aborted foetuses showed diffuse necrotic foci. Histologically, the liver and lungs of aborted foetuses revealed diffuse coagulative necrosis infiltrated with macrophages and neutrophils. Bacterial culture from the liver and lungs of foetuses found pure growth of L. ivanovii subsp. ivanovii.

Abortion Due To Streptococcus Equi Subspecies Zooepidemicus In A Mare, A. Levent Kocabiyik, Gürsel Sönmez, Mi̇hri̇ban Ülgen, Cüneyt Özakin, Esra Kocakaya, Ayli̇n Alasonyalilar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The organs of an aborted equine fetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. Diffuse, mild cellular infiltration of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells was observed in the lamina propria of the intestine. In addition, bacterial colonies were seen in the intestinal content, wall of intestine and liver. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus was isolated in pure culture from all organs. This is the first report of the isolation of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus from an aborted equine fetus in Turkey.

Concentrations Of Some Minerals In Cows With Retained Placenta And Abortion, Yaşar Akar, Hami̇t Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between blood levels of Ca, Zn, Mg, K, and Na and the occurrence of retained placenta and abortion in cows. Serum samples from 34 cows were analyzed (18 with retained placenta, 10 without retained placenta (control), and 6 that had aborted). Ca and Zn levels in cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than those in the control group. The serum Zn levels of aborted cows were higher (P < 0.001) than those of cows with retained placenta. Cows in the control group and those with retained placenta were divided into subgroups based on age (3, 4-6, 7-9 years old), type of parturition (normal, dystocia), and sex of calves (male, female). The serum Ca concentration of 3-year-old cows with retained placenta was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of those 7-9 years old. It is concluded that lower serum Ca and Zn levels in cows may induce placenta retention.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and leptospirosis in aborted dairy cattle. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from 163 aborted dairy cattle that had no history of vaccination against either brucellosis or leptospirosis. The antibodies against B. abortus were detected in these serum samples as 68.1%, 65.6%, 58.9% and 55.2%, respectively by the Competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (C-ELISA), Complement Fixation Test (CFT), Rosebengal Plate Test (RBPT) and Serum Agglutination Test (SAT). In the study, the serum samples were also collected from 15 healthy dairy cattle which had been vaccinated with reduced dose of B. …

Meningitis Associated With Brucella Abortus In An Aborted Bovine Foetus, Cengi̇z Çeti̇n, İ. Taci̇ Cangül, Mehmet Akan, Ebru Özel, Ahmet Akkoç

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the brain and other organs from an aborted bovine foetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. In addition, a serum sample from the aborting cow was examined serologically. A granulomatous inflammation, characterised by the infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells with some neutrophils and macrophages was observed in the meninges of the brain, liver and kidney. Brucella abortus biovar 1 was isolated in pure culture from the brain and other organs. The serum sample was positive for brucellosis. These findings indicate that Brucella abortus is a pathogen capable of inducing meningitis in bovine foetuses.

The newborn and pregnant animals were affected more severely. Two live chinchillas with clinical signs were euthanized and gross pathological, histopathological and microbiological examinations were performed. In the gross and microscopical examinations, the most severe lesions were …

The levels of selenium, zinc, copper, phosphorus, magnesium, total protein, vitamin A and E were measured in plasma samples of aborted and control animals. Present findings showed that concentration of vitamin E, selenium, copper, magnesium (P
