Overexpression of erbB-2 protein is a marker of clinically aggressive behavior in breast cancer patients. In general erbB-2 status is reported on a scale from negative to 3+, depending on staining intensity, if more than 10% of the tumor cells are stained. However, the original definition does not take into account the percentage of stained cells in detail, since all samples score in the same way if they are above the cut-off, established at 10%. In this study, we evaluated the erB-B2 overexpression by immunohistochemistry in 169 patients and evaluated any correlation with the other well known prognostic parameters. We …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women and an important cause of both morbidity and mortality. Although long-term disease-free survival is offered to women with early stage disease by current treatment modality, some, 30-40% of patients will have metastatic disease. Treatment of patients with metastatic disease is a great challenge for oncologists. Therefore, new drugs and therapeutic options for women with metastatic breast cancer are urgently required. Arsenical compounds have cytotoxic effects on several cancer cell lines including promyelocytic leukemia, esophageal carcinoma, megakaryocytic leukemia, and malignant lymphocytic cell lines. In addition, recent studies showed that arsenic trioxide (As_2O_3) …

Genetic Polymorphisms In Steroid Hormone Metabolizing Enzymes In Human Breast Cancer, Nesli̇han Aygün Kocabaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Epidemiologic studies indicate that most risk factors for breast cancer are related to reproductive and hormonal factors. The evaluation of associations between breast cancer risk and genetic polymorphisms in enzymes involved in hormone metabolism may be a cost effective manner in which to determine individual breast cancer susceptibility. A number of molecular epidemiologic studies have been conducted to evaluate associations between polymorphic genes involved in steroid hormone metabolism (i.e., CYP17, CYP19, CYP1A1, CYP1B1, MnSOD, COMT, and GST) that may account for a proportion of enzymatic variability. An evaluation of associations between breast cancer risk and genetic polymorphisms in enzymes involved …
