"Fueling For A Healthy Life:" A Cooking Class For Adolescent And Young Adult Childhood Cancer Survivors, Hope Dominique

Senior Theses

Following cancer treatment, childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at an increased risk of developing chronic diseases and face an increased risk of health-related death during adulthood. Recent literature demonstrates that modifying lifestyle factors such as nutrition can reduce the risk of late mortality in survivors, suggesting that interventions promoting a healthy lifestyle may improve quality and quantity of life for CCS. However, many adolescent and young adult (AYA) CCS do not adhere to national dietary guidelines and face both real and perceived barriers to adopting healthier eating habits while in a critical period for establishing behaviors that contribute to lifelong …

The Effects Of Lipocalin 2 On Lung Metastasis Of Colorectal And Other Cancers, Lauren Strzyzewski May 2017

The Effects Of Lipocalin 2 On Lung Metastasis Of Colorectal And Other Cancers, Lauren Strzyzewski

Senior Theses

Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) is a member of the lipocalin family of siderophore-binding molecules that can mediate iron trafficking. It acts during the innate immune response and has been implicated in conflicting roles in metastasis, leaving its role undefined. In breast cancer LCN2 was shown in previous studies to both inhibit or promote metastasis. Previous studies the Pena laboratory showed that increasing the serum levels of LCN2 caused a significantly increase in liver metastasis of the poorly metastatic MC-38 colon cancer cell line. In this study, we examined the ability of LCN2 to promote metastasis of colon and other cancers to …

The Role Of Lipocalin 2 In Early Stage Colon Cancer Metastasis To The Liver, Fides Elamparo May 2014

The Role Of Lipocalin 2 In Early Stage Colon Cancer Metastasis To The Liver, Fides Elamparo

Senior Theses

Metastasis, frequently from the colon to the liver, is the major cause of death with colorectal cancer, reducing the five-year survival to less than 6%. Metastasis occurs due to productive collaborations between tumor cells and host-derived cells in the tumor microenvironment, where a pre-metastatic niche is created to prime for cancer cell invasion into the target organ. In a highly metastatic colorectal cancer cell line implanted into the cecum of Balb/c mice, microarray analysis showed lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) is one of the most highly expressed proteins in the liver of tumor-bearing mice prior to metastasis.
