Although health promotion issues specific to people with physical disabilities have received much attention in the last ten years, related clinical trials studying the efficacy and viability of these programs are lacking. In this pilot study, we implemented a short-term health promotion intervention for overweight/obese post-polio survivors. The study design included a three-month intervention containing exercise, diet education and health behavior modification, a before-and-after comparison, and a 12-month follow-up.Thirty one subjects were enrolled. Congenitally deaf persons don't have the ability to communicate verbally due to profound hearing impairment. Thus, they rely on words and sign language to communicate with others. Physicians tend to pay less attention to people who can't communicate verbally. We report the case of a 45-year-old congenitally deaf man who developed a left frontotemporal brain tumor. He was right-handed. As a result of the tumor, he lost both the ability to form words and the sign language he had relied upon to communicate with others. Transient osteoporosis, also called ”bone marrow edema syndrome”, is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. It primarily affects women in the third trimester of pregnancy as well as middle-aged, overweight men, and the hip joint is most commonly involved. The main symptom of transient osteoporosis of the hip is a sudden onset of pain at the lateral aspect of the hip. Mild limitation of hip range of motion is often present. The objective of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of a clinical measurement for functional leg-length discrepancy (LLD) using the level and paper thickness correction (LPC) method to determine intra-rater and inter-rater reliability and validity. We induced a simulated LLD (5-30 mm) for each subject twice in a block-simulating group (n=17), none of whom had an apparent LLD. The cardinal presentations include acute unilateral radicular pain, corresponding dermatomal hypesthesia, hemiparesis, hemiplegia, paraparesis, paraplegia, and sphincter dysfunction. Schwannoma is a benign encapsulated nerve sheath tumor. It typically develops in middle age with unknown cause and usually involves spinal root and peripheral nerves. We report two cases of schwannoma presenting as palpable mass over lower limbs. Both masses had heterogeneous hypoechogenicity, faint posterior enhancement, and were located eccentric to a nerve fascicle. Preoperative sonography revealed both patients had nerve tumors derived from nerve fascicles. These cases illustrate how sonographic information about the relationship between mass and surrounding structures can facilitate surgical planning.

Hippotherapy is used to improve gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, the therapeutic effects of hippotherapy using specific position and its longitudinal improvements in children of hypotonic CP have not been thoroughly examined. A 6-year-old girl with hypotonic quadriplegic CP was noted to have generalized hypotonia and global delay in development before intervention. Rabbit syndrome has been demonstrated as one of the extrapyramidal side effects, which is associated strongly with chronic neuroleptic therapy in neurological patients, but less discussion in patients without therapy. We herein present a rare case of rabbit syndrome that occurred with neuroleptic naive patient. The study of cerebral perfusion with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) revealed increased perfusion in the right basal ganglion upon presentation of the oral-lip movement disorder and presented with a return to normal in a repeated SPECT perfusion when those movement ceased.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the differences in nerve conduction, soft tissues, and joint angles of the elbow exist between the bilateral arms of college tennis players and their controls. Sixteen healthy high-ranking tennis players and 15 controls without any history of pain in their upper extremities were recruited. Nerve conduction tests, ultrasonography, and X-ray evaluation were conducted on the elbows bilaterally of the players and controls.Results of the players showed that the sensory amplitudes of the ulnar nerve of the dominant arm were decreased (p=0.003). Kawasaki disease complicated by coronary artery disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Maximal anaerobic capacity and factors of restrictive exercise capacity need to be evaluated.To study the influence of Kawasaki disease on cardiopulmonary function and exercise capacity, sixteen children were recruited for the experimental group and given a cardiopulmonary exercise stress test. Sixteen healthy children were recruited as the control group. Femoral nerve injury is a rare complication after femoral angiography. Symptoms including quadriceps weakness and atrophy, absent or reduced knee jerk and sensory impairment along the anterior thigh and medial lower leg have been found. The nasogastric tube syndrome (NG tube syndrome) is a rare but a potentially life-threatening complication of a patient with indwelling nasogastric tube feeding. The cause of the syndrome is due to the NG tube irritation, resulting in ulceration and infection of the posterior cricoid region with subsequent dysfunction of vocal cord abduction. The work-related musculoskeletal disorders among the child care workers could be high given the fact that the workers frequently lift the children and conduct physical actions under inappropriate postures. The objective of this study is to survey the musculoskeletal disorders and potential ergonomic risk factors among the workers in a child care center through an on-site visit and a questionnaire survey. Flatfoot disease is caused by disappearance or collapse of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. Most of patients with flatfoot disease have what is known as ”flexible flatfoot”. Flatfoot in developmentally delayed children, however, is due to muscle weakness of lower limbs, which leads to disproportionate muscle growth or joint contracture. The purpose of this casereport is to demonstrate the remote effect of myofascial trigger point (MTrP) injection for pain control. It describes a patient suffering from chronic pain due to MTrPs in bilateral upper trapezius muscle with poor results to direct MTrP injection to upper trapezius. After injection to the MTrPs in bilateral extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor indicis, and first dorsal interosseous muscles, the effectiveness of MTrP injection to bilateral upper trapezius muscles remarkably enhanced. Two masses were clearly visible in the left palm and distal forearm, and a smaller lump was also palpable in the left antecubital area. A neurogenic tumor in the left palm was diagnosed by magnetic resonance image (MRI). Physical fitness is the state of health measured by body composition, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardiopulmonary endurance. Occupational difference in physical fitness results in differing physical demands of working environments. This study compared occupational fitness in 32,950 Taiwan adults aging from 18 to 65 years. Volunteers were classified by gender, age and occupation. The purpose of this study was to provide information for physical fitness training.Statistical differences among various occupations were found by this research. Over a 3-year period, 3852 patients with the first stroke were admitted to a medical center in Taiwan, of whom 227 (5.89%) were 15 to 45 years old. The diagnosis of stroke was confirmed by either MRI or CT scan. The incidence was skewed toward the older end of the age range, and men predominated (153/227, 67.4%). The stroke was the hemorrhagic type in 56.3% (128/227) versus the infarction type in 43.7% (99/227), a reversal of the ratio usually seen in patients over 45 years with infarction 64.9% (2500) versus hemorrhage 35.1% (1352). Levamisole, which is the L-isomer of tetramisole, has been used as an antihelminthic agent. Due to its immunomodulating property, it has been used to treat recurrent aphthous ulcers, pemphigus vulgaris, and malignant melanoma. It also has been used along with 5-fluorouracil to treat colon cancer. The side effects are mild and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and metal taste. However, existing evidence suggests that levamisole can induce multifocal inflammatory leukoencephalopathy. The course of levamisole-induced multifocal inflammatory leukoencephalopathy is monophasic and progressive. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare acquired disorder caused by a somatic mutation of the hematopoietic stem cells, which results in a loss of the complement regulatory proteins usually present on the membrane of blood cells. The outcome is an increased tendency for complement to damage the blood cells and, after a series of reactions, hemolytic and thrombotic episodes may occur.
