Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Veterans transition to baccalaureate nursing education with significant experiences from their military service. Faculty play a role in facilitating this transition, in and out of the classroom. Approaches to enhance nursing education programs to better meet student veterans' needs have been proposed. However, less is known about the experiences of faculty teaching student veterans. A qualitative descriptive design was used to examine nursing faculty experiences teaching veterans, and in facilitating veterans' transfer of learning and knowledge from their military experience to baccalaureate nursing education. Semi-structured interviews with twelve faculty from the United States were conducted …

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

© 2019 With the continued growth of the numbers of veterans in nursing programs, faculty need to be aware of how to best facilitate their learning and build on their diverse experiences and expertise. Understanding how veterans transfer learning from the military context to an academic context is crucial for nursing education. The findings of this qualitative descriptive study support that veterans transfer learning from their military experience to their nursing education. Eleven veterans comprised the sample. The themes were: Embracing and living core professional values, Learning from a team-based framework to achieve a common goal, Learning how and when …

Perspectives From Home Care For Guiding Patients And Families To A Successful Transition Home After Same-Day Surgery, Jessica Lahr, Brenda Elliott Jun 2018

Perspectives From Home Care For Guiding Patients And Families To A Successful Transition Home After Same-Day Surgery, Jessica Lahr, Brenda Elliott

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

MANY PATIENTS TODAY go through surgical procedures in a 1 day/same-day/ambulatory surgery setting. The shift from inpatient care to caring for patients in their own homes after discharge places countless demands on patients and their families during recovery. Patients and families often mistake same-day surgery for same-day recovery and underestimate needs they may have upon discharge. In a sample of patients undergoing joint procedures, approximately 38% were discharged directly to home care postprocedure and more than 50% went to some type of facility before being discharged to home care. With trends moving toward more outpatient surgical procedures, and with the …

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Aims and objectives: To examine and describe the transition process of military nurses from military nursing practice to civilian nursing practice. A second aim was to identify challenges and facilitators to this transition. Background: Serving in the military, and embodying its values, can have a major impact on a person's worldview. These individuals serve not only as nurses but also as part of a larger military culture with a mission to protect. Joining Forces: The Status Of Military And Veteran Health Care In Nursing Curricula, Brenda Elliott, Barbara Patterson Mar 2017

Joining Forces: The Status Of Military And Veteran Health Care In Nursing Curricula, Brenda Elliott, Barbara Patterson

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are approximately 23 million veterans living in the United States. In 2012, the Joining Forces initiative highlighted the need to enhance nursing education for the military and veteran population. With the drawdown of 2 long, large-scale conflicts, a young cohort of veterans presented new challenges in health care. Although not necessarily a traditional vulnerable population, given their emergent health care needs, they are vulnerable. Purnell's Model for Cultural Competence provided a framework for this exploratory descriptive study. A national on-line survey of 123 nursing programs that pledged to …

Enduring To Gain New Perspective: A Grounded Theory Study Of The Experience Of Perinatal Bereavement In Black Adolescents, Kimberly H. Fenstermacher

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

Black adolescents in the US experience perinatal loss at a higher rate than other races and ethnicities. The experience of eight Black urban adolescents through the first 3 months after perinatal loss was studied using grounded theory. The process of "enduring to gain new perspective" began with "denying and hesitating" when surprised by unplanned pregnancy but led to "getting ready for this whole new life," followed by shock of "suffering through the loss," "all that pain for nothing," and "mixed emotions going everywhere." Over time, the adolescents began "reaching out for support" and eventually "preserving the memory and maintaining relationship," …

Achieving Medical Stability: Wives' Experiences With Heart Failure, Judith E. Hupcey, Kimberly Fenstermacher, Lisa Kitko, Janice Penrod Aug 2010

Achieving Medical Stability: Wives' Experiences With Heart Failure, Judith E. Hupcey, Kimberly Fenstermacher, Lisa Kitko, Janice Penrod

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

The incidence of heart failure continues to rise as innovative treatments are developed. Despite life-prolonging interventions, morbidity and mortality in patients younger than 65 remain high. Few studies have focused on this younger cohort and/or their family caregivers as they navigate the complex illness trajectories manifested in heart failure. Instrumental case studies were employed to present exemplars for each of the five identified heart failure trajectories. Culling data from a longitudinal study of female spousal caregivers, each case study represents a wife's discussion of caring for a husband (years) in response to the husband's changing heart failure trajectory. The goal …

A Model Of Palliative Care For Heart Failure, Judith E. Hupcey, Janice Penrod, Kimberly Fenstermacher Oct 2009

A Model Of Palliative Care For Heart Failure, Judith E. Hupcey, Janice Penrod, Kimberly Fenstermacher

Nursing (Graduate) Educator Scholarship

The heart failure illness trajectory is both complex and unpredictable, which makes providing palliative care services to patients with heart failure a challenge. As a result, although services are needed, few tend to be offered beyond basic medical management. The traditional model of palliative care is typically based on palliative care being considered a system of care delivery most appropriate for patients with a predictable illness/death trajectory, such as terminal cancer. This type of model, which is based on the ability to predict the course of a terminal disease, does not fit the heart failure trajectory. In this article, we …
