Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pretreatment submental-vertex radiographs were obtained for 637 adolescent patients (307 males, 330 females) who had presented themselves for orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine the relationship between condylar angulations and depth of cut with the variables: age, sex, and race, and (2) establish normative values for the categories studied. The results indicated that no significant differences existed between the condylar angulations for the variables measured. However, significant differences did exist between the depth of cut for the variables measured and there was significant interaction between age and race with respect to the depth of cut. …

Characteristics Of Habitual Dysfunctional Behaviors, Carole Ryan Serena Jun 1992

Characteristics Of Habitual Dysfunctional Behaviors, Carole Ryan Serena

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The suggestion that habitual dysfunctional behavior disorders (HDBs) have a common underlying cluster of addictive characteristics and dynamics is new. A broad research base which would support this theory has not kept current with clinical In order successes. In order to address the need for relevant research, an anonymous cross sectional study was designed to identify, describe and compare variables associated with 15 habitual dysfunctional behaviors (HDBs) in a sample (N =176) from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic groups.

People reporting two different HDBs (alcohol and food-related behaviors) were compared to those not reporting any HDBs on levels of four …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Treatment of the intrabony or intraosseous periodontal defect has rendered much attention over the last few decades. Numerous approaches have been advocated; however, overall comparisons between treatments do not exist. This review summarizes and discusses outcomes of therapeutic modalities in the intrabony periodontal lesion from controlled clinical studies. The modalities reviewed include scaling and root planning, gingival flap surgery, gingival flap surgery including wound closure with interdental denudation, root-biomodification, placement of autologous, allogenic, or xenogeneic bone grafts, placement of alloplastic grafts, and placement of tissue guiding barrier membranes. In addition histologic observations of healing in the intrabony periodontal lesion are …

The Expression And Regulation Of The Hsdk Genes Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Ainu Parkash Mar 1992

The Expression And Regulation Of The Hsdk Genes Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Ainu Parkash

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The DNA restriction and modification (R-M) genes in bacteria play a defensive role in the organism, offering protection to the host from invaders such as bacteriophages. The expression of these genes in E. coli K-12 had not previously been studied due to the complexity of the EcoK R-M enzymes. The use of lacZ gene fusion techniques allowed studies of the expression of the hsdK genes for the first time. Operon fusions of Mu(/ac) to the hsdK genes show that the two hsdK promoters, p res and p mod, are weak (50 Miller units) and that …

Food Handling Practices Among Independent-Living Elderly, Judith Dianne Mcdonough Oct 1991

Food Handling Practices Among Independent-Living Elderly, Judith Dianne Mcdonough

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Food has long been recognized as a vehicle of disease transmission; there are more reported illness associated with the consumption of food than all other environmental factors combined. The handling and storage of food are potentially dangerous and demanding chores for those who may have the sensory losses associated with advancing age, fragile health, and limited resources.

Group-administered questionnaires on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of food handling were given to 276 seniors, aged 55 to 90, from ten mobile home parks randomly selected from San Bernardino and Riverside counties. As an indicator of possible foodborne illness, the questionnaire asked …

Dysfunctional Attitudes, Life Stress And Coping Processes, Deborah Desalliers Sep 1991

Dysfunctional Attitudes, Life Stress And Coping Processes, Deborah Desalliers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The findings of recent investigations earmarked chronic daily stressors as being highly related to stress levels. In addition, researchers are promoting a more integrative model of stress. The stress response is no longer thought of in strictly linear terms, i.e. an event causes stress. Rather, cognitive factors, existing within the human mind itself, strongly influence our coping processes and the chronic stress we experience.

Canonical correlation analysis was used to study how dysfunctional attitudes, a negative cognitive factor, were related to individuals' daily hassles and coping processes. An increase in dysfunctional attitudes was found to correspond to an increase in …

The Effect Of Ethanol On Bone Histomorphology, Rebecca L. Rodocker Aug 1991

The Effect Of Ethanol On Bone Histomorphology, Rebecca L. Rodocker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of ethanol on bone histomorphology was studied using an isocaloric liquid pair feeding system to administer equal amounts of essential vitamins and nutrients to control and ethanol animals.

A bone remodeling sequence was induced in the lower right mandible by removal of the upper right molars. The bone remodeling unit, consisting mainly of the osteoclast and osteoblast, could then be studied microscopically to note any changes brought about by the administration of ethanol.

Although the method of ethanol administration was successful, the induction of unintended bone remodeling via the removal of a solid diet made analysis of the …

The pulps of mandibular molars of 15 athymic and 15 conventional rats were surgically exposed and left open to their oral flora. Each group was divided into 3 subgroups of 5 animals each. The rats were sacrificed after their pulps were exposed for 2, 4, or 8 weeks. After fixing, decalcifying, and embedding, the specimens were sectioned and stained with H and E. They were then examined under a microscopic grid and quantified by percentages of surface areas of bone, connective tissue, bone marrow, intrabony spaces, periapical lesions, and numbers of osteoclasts. This was done using a DataVoice computerized data …

Effect Of Age On The Structure Of Meissner Corpuscles In Forepad Digital Pads Of Mice, Roger C. Mathewson Jun 1991

Effect Of Age On The Structure Of Meissner Corpuscles In Forepad Digital Pads Of Mice, Roger C. Mathewson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Meissner corpuscles in forepaw digital pads of albino mice were examined by light and electron microscopy to determine structural age-changes. After 1.5 months of age, no intraepidermal nerve fibers were seen extending from corpuscles. From young (1.5-6 months) to middle age (9-15 months), corpuscles became larger and more complex, gaining more horizontally arranged terminals, associated lamellae and connective tissue. At old age (18-26 months), corpuscles became small and lobulated, appearing disorganized. There was no loosening of the corpuscle-epidermal interface. An increase in collagenous connective tissue and basal lamina duplication occurred with advancing age. Ultrastructural age-changes consisted of disorganization of the …

Radiation due to x-ray exposure is a concern, and the development of the Dolphin™ DigiGraph represents an attempt to limit this exposure. The purpose of this paper was to compare measurements (using Ricketts analysis) obtained from conventional radiographic cephalometric tracings with those obtained by computerized digitizing with the DigiGraph. Forty-six patients from the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry graduate orthodontic clinic were digitized, and the results were compared to the x-ray tracings of these patients. The results showed that seven of the twenty-one variables examined exhibited a statistical similarity between the two methods (DigiGraph and x-ray tracing). An examination …

The Use Of Corrected Occlusal X-Ray For Determination Of Ald : A Comparative Study, Merlin D. Ekvall Jun 1991

The Use Of Corrected Occlusal X-Ray For Determination Of Ald : A Comparative Study, Merlin D. Ekvall

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this study arch length discrepancy or ALD was studied in 50 untreated patients. The measurements obtained from Hilgers' corrected occlusal x-ray using his Occlusal Paralleling Instrument or O.P.I, were compared with those derived by four conventional methods, - "Eye balling," digital caliper determination, conventional mandibular x-ray, and the Rocky Mountain Data Systems computer analysis (31 cases). When using the OPI, results give a higher negative ALD as it takes into consideration the space required to level a curve of Spee.

Measurements were made by the author and 3 faculty members using the above methods. Statistical analysis of the means …

The purpose of this study was to examine the normal variations in the thickness of the six maxillary anterior teeth and how this relates to anticipated first order bends in the archwire. A second purpose was to examine these same teeth for bilateral symmetry.

Thirty casts from the Loma Linda University completed treatment files were examined with respect to variations in the thicknesses of the crowns at the level of the archwire plane. From these, the mean difference …

The Effectiveness Of Minimal Pair Therapy For S-Cluster Reduction, Julie Anne Mcdow Jun 1991

The Effectiveness Of Minimal Pair Therapy For S-Cluster Reduction, Julie Anne Mcdow

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This descriptive study compared minimal pair therapy to a modeling imitative method of phonological remediation. The s-cluster was targeted for remediation. Four phonologically impaired children, ages 3-2 to 3-11, served as subjects. In the minimal pair procedure, minimal pairs were used to contrast the meaning of correctly produced target words and incorrectly produced target words. In the non-minimal pair approach, correct productions were modeled and cued for the subjects to imitate/produce. Generalization to untrained words was insufficient to assess the effectiveness of the two procedures used. Other measures made during the course of the study produced some interesting findings. Imitative …

Molecular Mechanism Of The Stimulation Of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity In Human Bone Cells By 1,25(Oh)2 D3, Eru Kyeyune-Nyombi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To facilitate this study an in vitro human model system was established that exhibited many aspects of normal osteoblasts. The human osteosarcoma cell line (TE85 cells) expressed a skeletal alkaline phosphatase activity (an accepted bone cell differentiation marker) which was stimulated by 1,25(OH)2D3 (a potent differentiating agent), under serum-free conditions in a dose-dependent, time-dependent, and cell density-dependent manner. Cytochemical analysis of the stimulation of ALP activity by 1,25(OH)2D3 showed that 1,25(OH)2D3 increased the number of TE85 cells that expressed detectable ALP activity, suggesting that 1,25(OH)2D3 promoted the process …

Proto-Oncogene Regulation By Growth Factors In Bone Cells, Harold Lyndon Merriman Aug 1990

Proto-Oncogene Regulation By Growth Factors In Bone Cells, Harold Lyndon Merriman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous studies have shown that bone cells in culture produce a number of growth factors that are important in bone regulation. Chick and mouse primary calvarial cultures consist of a mixture of cell types that make it difficult to interpret the results from these model systems. In contrast, MC3T3-E1 cells are a clonal mouse osteoblast-like cell line. Since MC3T3-E1 cells consist of a single population of calvarial cells, they make an ideal system in which to study the autocrine effects of bone growth factors.

Based on this work, MC3T3-E1 cells are now known to produce IGF-I, TGF-beta and IGF-II in …
