This study was designed to (1) demonstrate the dimensional changes resulting from opening the suture, (2) test the stability of the repaired suture two months following the removal of the retentive appliance, and (3) demonstrate new bone growth in the opened suture by the use of Tetracycline staining. The animal chosen was the Macaca mulatta monkey.

Intact skulls, sectioned skulls and dental casts were measured following the experiment. The skulls were mounted in clear plastic and sectioned antero-posteriorly for the purposes of study and measurements. The following changes were noted as a result of this experiment:

Evaluation of the cephalograms of 150 patients showed a wide range in the angulation of the lower border of the mandible to the various facial planes. The degree of this angulation did not always correspond with the severity of malocclusion. Group I represents normal occlusions, Group II comprises malocclusions.

A new reference line is submitted for the investigation of its advantages in cephalometric roentgenography. In order to quantitate initial tooth movement in response to forces applied to the tooth crown, an instrument for intraoral use has been developed. The photomicrometer consists of nine photosensitive cells mounted in an assembly of two layers. Eight of the cells were mounted to form X and Y axes, top layer and bottom layer, to measure horizontal movements. The ninth cell was mounted in the center of the bottom layer and was used for alignment and for measurements in the Z or vertical axis. A convenience sample of 480 Caucasians using original diagnostic cephalometric films was selected to evaluate the nasion-menton and sella-gonion distances and their relationship to the mandibular plane angle.

The anterior facial height was represented by the nasion-menton plane. The posterior facial height was represented by sella-gonion plane. The facial depth was represented by sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes. The mandibular plane angle was represented by the intersection of the sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes.

Two-hour postprandial blood sugar determinations were carried out on 500 patients referred for periodontal care. The mean percentage of alveolar bone loss around the mandibular bicuspid teeth was established for each individual. The subjects were then grouped according to blood sugar levels and the mean alveolar bone loss was calculated. The group was separated into male and female sub-groups and data was computed for these segments as well as the total sample. The data was evaluated in a similar manner for those subjects between 40 and 49 years of age.

This experiment was designed to evaluate an oral surgical dressing which may be used as an aid to healing tissue. The parameters of evaluation were directed toward wound healing enhancement, duration, and stability of the bandage. A histological evaluation of the surgical wounds protected with the bandage as compared to the control wounds was made.

Plaster casts of teeth and lateral cephalometric roentgenograms were studied to see with what degree of accuracy sex could be determined. The sample considered was made up of one hundred and forth-four individuals--50 males and 94 females--being treated in the Graduate Orthodontic Department of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. The age range for the boys was from 15 to 19 and for the girls, from 14 to 20. Data was obtained for the following variables from tracings of the roentgenograms and from the dental casts:

The purpose of the study was to determine if cloth stuffed toys used by children in the pediatric unit of Loma Linda University Hospital carry microbacterial pathogens that are the same type as those pathogens found in the throat of the child using the toy. A second purpose was to determine how long the selected pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Diplococcus pneumonia, survive on the same cloth toys as used in the selected hospital. The purposes of this study were: (1) to find out if it is necessary to check temperatures of adult medical and surgical patients as frequently as it has been done in the selected hospital; and (2) to show that factors of beginning elevations can be identified without checking patients’ temperatures more than once daily.

A survey was conducted of fifty-nine adult medical and forty adult surgical patients' temperatures from the time they were admitted until they were discharged or for ten days. A total of 2,484 temperatures were studied. Most of the patients had their highest temperatures at 8 p.m. …

Studies were conducted utilizing albino rats to determine the relationship of voluntary alcohol consumption with various dietary additives and exposure to cigarette smoke in combination with poor quality diets. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats, from weanling age to 100 grams, were given the various experimental diets and a free fluid choice of ten per cent ethanol or tap water. Fluid intakes were recorded and analyzed statistically. Individual variation was common with a generally low level of alcohol consumption when rats were fed a poor quality diet of common United States foods. The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. This exploratory study had as its objective the identification of the spiritual needs of patients. Three aspects of the study were: (1) to identify the spiritual needs students of nursing recognized during the care of their patients; (2) to discover the type of behavior patients manifested which enabled the students to recognize these needs and, (3) to identify the spiritual care given to patients by students during their regular nursing assignments.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of particular sounds upon certain indices of cardio-pulmonary function and the degree and pattern of changes which occurred in the indices. The specific physiological parameters chosen to be monitored were heart rate, respiratory rate, mean tidal volume, instantaneous minute volume, and oxygen consumption. A questionnaire was developed to determine the ethical attitudes and education of a group of California dietitians. A group of 198 randomly selected individuals from the California Dietetic Association membership of 2,180 participated in the study.

Great diversity was exhibited in age, type of position held and total years of work experience in the sample group. Eighty-one per cent of the respondents were less than forty-nine years of age. The positions most frequently held by the participants were in hospital therapeutics and administration, teaching and schools, and consultant work. A total of 223 cephalometric radiographs selected from six contemporary western United States and Alaskans native groups were analyzed by use of the Bjork cephalometric analysis. Those native groups selected were the Eskimos, Apaches, Navajos, Papagos, Pimas and Mayos. Approximately thirty to forty natives from each group were used in the study with ages ranging from thirteen to thirty-five years. The majority were in the fifteen to twenty year age range.

The purpose of this study was to give a graphic portrayal of the gross changes in occlussal [sic] relationship and the spacial relationship of the bony elements of the mid-face region as produced by palatal expansive forces. The animal of choice was the Macaca mulatta monkey.

The effect of fluoride on the physical properties of the rat femur was investigated by using an Instron materials tester. Experimental animals consisting of 80 female weanling rats were employed. These were divided into two major groups of 40 rats each. Group I received adequate calcium in the diet and Group II received a low calcium (0.1%) diet. The study was guided by the null hypothesis which stated that the patient who receives specific written information before the sigmoidoscopic exam reports the same discomfort as the patient who has not had this information. The first study was designed to evaluate by the nitrogen balance method the protein quality of a pure-vegetarian diet containing about 6 grams of nitrogen per day. The group as a whole maintained nitrogen equilibrium the average being - 0.11 grams of nitrogen per day. Two subjects were not in nitrogen balance, however, factors other than diet may have contributed to these results and are discussed in the thesis. Hemoglobin, serum cholesterol and total serum proteins did not change significantly during the study. The average true digestibility of 5 of the subjects was 85 percent. Samples of blood were obtained from thirty healthy young adult males (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry), and contaminated with bacteria. Varying concentrations of pure glucose were added to this mixture to observe the effect of the glucose on in vitro neutrophilic phagocytosis. As the glucose levels increased a statistically significant suppression was noted in the ability of the neutrophilic leukocytes to engulf Staphylococcus epidermidis.

It was not possible, however, to predict the degree of suppression for any particular level of glucose added nor is it possible to state that suppression will occur in any one individual.

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH1403, glucose-UC14 or aspartate-4-C14. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH1403 and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. The action of a chemotherapeutic agent as a tool in studying its effect upon a primary growth center, the mandibular condyle, was investigated. So far as can be ascertained, no studies have been reported where these growth sites have been eliminated or modified by the use of chemotherapeutic growth inhibitors.

Observation of mandibular and alveolar growth following the infusion into the left external carotid artery of a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, 5-Fluorouricil (Roach-Hoffman), was noted. Comparisons were made between the infused and the uninfused sides of the mandible observing gross growth changes.

The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent of investigator error. This was accomplished by remeasuring many morphologic traits of the dentition in 125 Indians which had previously been measured by different investigators using the same study models. Free amino acid levels in the blood plasma of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907, were measured at 3, 6, and 9 weeks post-infection with an automatic amino acid analyzer. Significant differences between experimental and control animals occurred at all three time periods. At 3 weeks, asparagine, alanine, citrulline, proline, methionine, and threonine levels all were lower in the infected animals. At 6 weeks, four differences were noted. Alpha-amino-n-butyric acid, ornithine, lysine, and histidine all had lower values in infected animals. At 9 weeks there were 12 differences. A computer model of a human maxillary central incisor was devised to predict the momentary center of rotation of a tooth when a force was applied to the crown. The root of a tooth was divided up into a series of small segments to simulate the resisting forces set up along the root by the periodontal fibers. Each segment was assumed to resist a force in proportion to its area.

Although the Panorex X-ray unit has been in existence for almost a decade, no information is publicly available relative to the determination of its laminagraphic slice width or position.

In order to utilize the machine most effectively as a research tool, it seems imperative that this width and position be established.

For the purpose of establishing the spatial relationship within the exposure mechanism, the two eccentric rotational axes were first located. This descriptive survey study was conducted to find out if women experienced more postoperative discomforts than men as determined by their statements on the third postoperative day. With this knowledge, the nursing care of these patients can be planned and improved. Twenty-five men and twenty-five women interviewed on their third postoperative day were asked to recall what they had experienced on the first, second, and third postoperative days. An interview guide adapted from the study conducted by Bartlett was used. The findings indicated that more women than men complained of feeling uncomfortable postoperatively.
