Decision makers in the behavioral health disciplines are under increasing pressure to identify and implement evidence-based practices (EBPs). These decision makers often do not have the time or expertise to assess primary studies of program efficacy or effectiveness. They could benefit from tools to assist them in identifying and implementing EBPs. One tool is an evidence-based practice register (EBPR). Problem Maternal deaths and comorbidities related to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) continue to be high despite being quite preventable. The delay in recognition and treatment of PPH due to the use of imprecise estimated blood loss (EBL) instead of precise measurement using quantitative blood loss (QBL) attributes to this issue.

Methods For this quality improvement (QI) project, a descriptive, observational design was used to gather quantitative data regarding QBL implementation instead of EBL as well as the number of PPH’s identified. Problem: Antibiotic stewardship is an effort to evaluate and improve the use of antibiotics by providers and patients. Antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) promote the appropriate use of antibiotics. There is increasing evidence that supports the use of antibiotic stewardship programs in reducing antibiotic prescribing rates while continuing to maintain safe patient care. Evidence-based protocols promote standardization of care and patient safety. The inclusion of major stakeholders is imperative to the success of implementation of a new protocol. The “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery” (ERAS) protocol was implemented at the Veterans Administration Medical Center – St. Louis prior to formal education of direct-care registered nurses (RNs), a major stakeholder group.
