Background: Prescribed opioid medication after orthopedic sports surgery has been shown to exceed patient requirements. In 2017, as a response to the opioid epidemic, Ohio passed Opioid Prescribing Guidelines (OPG) limiting narcotic prescriptions for acute pain. This study sought to evaluate the effects of the OPG on prescribing behavior of orthopedists following knee arthroscopy (KA), shoulder arthroscopy (SA), and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).

Complete congenital arhinia is a rare defect of embryogenesis leading to the absence of the external nose and nasopharyngeal airway. In this study, we report our novel multi-staged reconstructive approach of congenital arhinia in addition to literature review. Reconstruction was achieved via several spaced operations. A nasal methyl methacrylate prosthesis was first created from a stereolithographic model for use as a temporary prosthesis and tissue expander. Lefort 1 osteotomy with cannulization was then utilized for midface advancement and nasopharyngeal airway formation. The present manuscript discusses the concept of fluorescence-guided surgical debridement of chronic osteomyelitis in the orthopaedic patient based upon a two-fold mechanism, natural fluorescence of healthy bone combined with bone labeling by tetracyclines. The senior author prefers preoperative administration of oral doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for at least 1 month. The excitation source of choice is an ordinary blacklight, as this is both cost-effective and readily attainable. Intraoperatively, viable bone is noted to fluoresce a greenish hue which is then used to guide the debridement. Objectives: The orthopaedic surgery residency applicant class of 2016 had a nationwide match rate of 67.8%. This institution received 573 applications for four residency spots. As orthopaedic surgery residency becomes more competitive, so does the drive among applicants to improve their residency applications. Research experience, in particular, is becoming an increasingly common component of applications. Previous research has demonstrated that the requirement for a PubMed Identification number on all published citations on residency applications since 2014 has led to a drastic decrease in misrepresentation of published research. Management of displaced pediatric radial neck fractures can be fraught with challenges. This unique case presents an 11-year-old female with a Salter-Harris type II radial neck fracture and how her radial head overturned 180° with the articular surface facing the radial shaft rather than the capitellum during closed manipulation under anesthesia. The malreduction subsequently required open reduction and highlights the importance of a careful stepwise approach to managing markedly displaced radial neck fractures.
