Effects Of Ohio Opioid Prescribing Policy On Postsurgical Prescriptions Following Sports Procedures, Joseph D. Henningsen, Scott Huff, Andrew D. Schneider, Fady Y. Hijji, Andrew W. Froehle, Anil Krishnamurthy

Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Publications

Background: Prescribed opioid medication after orthopedic sports surgery has been shown to exceed patient requirements. In 2017, as a response to the opioid epidemic, Ohio passed Opioid Prescribing Guidelines (OPG) limiting narcotic prescriptions for acute pain. This study sought to evaluate the effects of the OPG on prescribing behavior of orthopedists following knee arthroscopy (KA), shoulder arthroscopy (SA), and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).

Methods: An institutional database was queried to calculate morphine equivalent dose (MED) prescribed at discharge, acute follow-up (<90 days), and chronic follow-up (>90 days) and compare MED pre- and post-OPG. Cases were identified over a 2-year period starting 1 year …

Holding Traction During Ct: Simple Tricks To Maintain Reduction In The Lower Extremity, Garrhett G. Via, David A. Brueggeman, Alexander Chase, Jennifer L. Jerele, Kyle S. Mobley Apr 2021

Holding Traction During Ct: Simple Tricks To Maintain Reduction In The Lower Extremity, Garrhett G. Via, David A. Brueggeman, Alexander Chase, Jennifer L. Jerele, Kyle S. Mobley

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Traction is one of the pillars of orthopaedic injury management, as it can provide both temporizing and definitive treatment for anatomic malalignment associated with joint dislocations and fractures. In the realm of modern orthopaedic care, post-traction imaging provides the surgeon with information about resting fracture position and the overall effects of traction that are critical to preoperative planning. However, there are often circumstances in which an orthopaedic surgery provider is faced with the discrepancy between the proper sequence of orthopaedic care and the need for emergent, advanced imaging to evaluate other organ systems. In other words, they are often forced …

Reconstructionof Congenital Arhinia With Stereolithography, Kelly Spiller, Kaitlynne Pak, Lucas M. Harrison, Spencer Anderson, Steven Schmidt, Salim Mancho Apr 2021

Reconstructionof Congenital Arhinia With Stereolithography, Kelly Spiller, Kaitlynne Pak, Lucas M. Harrison, Spencer Anderson, Steven Schmidt, Salim Mancho

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Complete congenital arhinia is a rare defect of embryogenesis leading to the absence of the external nose and nasopharyngeal airway. In this study, we report our novel multi-staged reconstructive approach of congenital arhinia in addition to literature review. Reconstruction was achieved via several spaced operations. A nasal methyl methacrylate prosthesis was first created from a stereolithographic model for use as a temporary prosthesis and tissue expander. Lefort 1 osteotomy with cannulization was then utilized for midface advancement and nasopharyngeal airway formation. External nasal framework was constructed with bilateral conchal bowl cartilage and rib osteocartilagenous grafts. The patient was overall pleased …

Fluorescence-Guided Surgical Debridement Of Chronic Osteomyelitis Utilizing Doxycycline Bone Labeling: A Technical Trick Revived, Garrhett G. Via, David A. Brueggeman, Grant M. Slack, James M. Danias, Jennifer L. Jerele Apr 2021

Fluorescence-Guided Surgical Debridement Of Chronic Osteomyelitis Utilizing Doxycycline Bone Labeling: A Technical Trick Revived, Garrhett G. Via, David A. Brueggeman, Grant M. Slack, James M. Danias, Jennifer L. Jerele

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The present manuscript discusses the concept of fluorescence-guided surgical debridement of chronic osteomyelitis in the orthopaedic patient based upon a two-fold mechanism, natural fluorescence of healthy bone combined with bone labeling by tetracyclines. The senior author prefers preoperative administration of oral doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for at least 1 month. The excitation source of choice is an ordinary blacklight, as this is both cost-effective and readily attainable. Intraoperatively, viable bone is noted to fluoresce a greenish hue which is then used to guide the debridement. Previous studies have demonstrated that bleeding bone is not a reliable indicator of a …

Publication Status Of Unpublished Research Manuscripts On Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applications After 30 Months, J. T. Barnes Jan 2021

Publication Status Of Unpublished Research Manuscripts On Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applications After 30 Months, J. T. Barnes

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Objectives: The orthopaedic surgery residency applicant class of 2016 had a nationwide match rate of 67.8%. This institution received 573 applications for four residency spots. As orthopaedic surgery residency becomes more competitive, so does the drive among applicants to improve their residency applications. Research experience, in particular, is becoming an increasingly common component of applications. Previous research has demonstrated that the requirement for a PubMed Identification number on all published citations on residency applications since 2014 has led to a drastic decrease in misrepresentation of published research. While publication is the ultimate goal of most research projects, not all manuscripts …

Inadvertent Radial Head Inversion During Closed Reduction Of A Pediatric Radial Neck Fracture, Zachary J. Sirois, Sarah Kreul, Craig F. Shank May 2019

Inadvertent Radial Head Inversion During Closed Reduction Of A Pediatric Radial Neck Fracture, Zachary J. Sirois, Sarah Kreul, Craig F. Shank

Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Publications

Management of displaced pediatric radial neck fractures can be fraught with challenges. This unique case presents an 11-year-old female with a Salter-Harris type II radial neck fracture and how her radial head overturned 180° with the articular surface facing the radial shaft rather than the capitellum during closed manipulation under anesthesia. The malreduction subsequently required open reduction and highlights the importance of a careful stepwise approach to managing markedly displaced radial neck fractures. After closed reduction, meticulous assessment of intraoperative imaging when determining proper alignment is of the utmost importance as a result of the transverse nature of Salter-Harris type …
