Background Hearing aid prescriptive methods are a commonly recommended component of evidence-based preferred practice guidelines and are often implemented in the hearing aid programming software. OBJECTIVES: Cardiac catheterisation is commonly used for diagnosis and therapeutic interventions in paediatric cardiology. The inherent risk of the procedure can result in unanticipated admissions to critical care. Our goals were to provide a qualitative description of characteristics and evaluation of children admitted unexpectedly to the cardiac critical care unit (CCCU).

METHODS: A retrospective single centre review of cardiac catheterisation procedures was done between 1 January, 2003 and 30 April, 2013.

Introduction

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a high fatality pediatric brain cancer without effective treatment. The field of electrotherapeutics offers new potential for other forms of glioma but the efficacy of this strategy has not been reported for DIPG. This pilot study evaluated the susceptibility of patient-derived DIPG cells to low intensity electric fields delivered using a developing technology called intratumoral modulation therapy (IMT).

Methods

Background

Pediatrician and pediatric subspecialist density varies substantially among the various Canadian provinces, as well as among various states in the US. It is unknown whether this variability impacts health outcomes. To study this knowledge gap, we evaluated pediatric asthma admission rates within the 2 Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which have similarly sized pediatric populations and substantially different physician densities.

Renal oncocytosis is a rare condition in which the kidney develops numerous oncocytomas. We present a case of a 12-year-old female who presented with right-sided flank pain of one-year duration. Imaging revealed several masses in the right kidney. Tissue biopsy confirmed multiple benign oncocytomas. Due to the presence of multiple oncocytomas throughout the kidney, a radical nephrectomy was performed. Given the rarity of this condition, as well as its known association with von Hippel-Lindau disease and Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome, genetic investigations were pursued but failed to identify any abnormalities. Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is associated with pediatric cerebrovascular-related complications. DKA-associated inflammation instigates leukocyte adherence to the brain microvascular endothelium. As adhered leukocytes release enzymes that compromise vascular integrity, we questioned a role for leukocyte-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and azurophilic enzymes (elastase, proteinase-3, myeloperoxidase). Our aims were to measure leukocyte-derived enzymes in DKA plasma, determine associations with DKA severity and investigate their effect on the cerebrovascular endothelium.

Plasma was obtained from children with type-1 diabetes, either in acute DKA or insulin-controlled. DKA was associated with altered plasma levels of ↓MMP-2, ↑MMP-8, ↑MMP-9 and ↑TIMP-4, which are largely leukocyte in origin. DKA …
