This work investigates how single mothers maintain healthy behaviours for themselves and their children as they try to meet the evolving COVID-19 public recommendations. Despite numerous studies about gender-based violence (GBV) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), little attention has been paid to violence against women and girls with disabilities. Thus, this scoping review provides an overview of the empirical literature on GBV and disability within the SSA context. Selected literature included various aspects of GBV epidemiology, prevention and response, and interventions. Other aims were to identify the gaps in the current knowledge base and to contribute to an evidence-informed framework for the development of relevant and holistic programs and policies. Background: In Canada, 70% of youth are not meeting the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables (FV) daily. School nutrition programs are one strategy for improving dietary habits in youth.

Methods: A two-year pilot cluster randomized controlled trial was implemented within Southwestern Ontario to assess how a ten-week centrally-procured school food program (CPSFP) influences students’ consumption and instances of FV compared to the traditional school nutrition program (TSNP).

Results: Children were 9-13 years of age; 30 schools received the CPSFP and 30 received the TSNP. Vegetable consumption did not change with the CPSFP (mean=0.0; SD=1.0) or the TSNP …

The Mental Health First Aid First Nations course was adapted from Mental Health First Aid Basic to create a community‐based, culturally safe and relevant approach to promoting mental health literacy in First Nations contexts. Over 2.5 days, the course aims to build community capacity by teaching individuals to recognize and respond to mental health crises. This feasibility trial utilized mixed methods to evaluate the acceptability, cultural adaptation, and preliminary effectiveness of MHFAFN. This study aimed to explore the presence and characteristics of physical activity and screen-viewing regulations in Canadian childcare centres. Using a modified version of the Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation Self-Report tool (EPAO-SR), an online survey was distributed to childcare directors/administrators. A total of 1,290 childcare representatives accessed the survey, 514 provided complete data. Of these, 295 (44%) centres indicated having a written physical activity policy (with the majority regulated at the provincial-level). Characteristics of these policies included amount of time: spent outdoors (395; 63%); in teacher-led active play (101; 16%); and physical activity education for children (91; 16%). …

The overall purpose of this dissertation was to explore young children’s (18 months to 5 years) physical activity and sedentary time. Study 1 assessed the physical activity and sedentary time among a sample of toddlers from London, Canada using two data processing approaches. Study 2 explored the impact of three different early learning environments, and their respective characteristics (e.g., staff behaviours, equipment, sedentary opportunities, etc.), on preschoolers’ activity levels. Study 3 examined differences in two popular accelerometers used to measure young children’s physical activity and sedentary time to better understand measurement discrepancies.

The purpose of this integrated article dissertation was to examine the predictive factors for success in the RCMP’s Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) in a retrospective observational study of 13, 709 unique records and a divisional subset of 620 for study two and three. Study one assessed the relative predictive power of the pursuit and body control times, while including covariates of height, weight, age. Significant (p< 0.05) and equally strong effects were for pursuit log odds (LO) of 2.95% CI [2.49, 3.11], and body control time LO of 2.80, 95% CI [2.51, 3.14] with a weak predictor , LO of 0.53, 95% CI [0.38, 0.72]. Not significant were height, weight, and sex with 99 % modeling accuracy.

The present study sets out to better understand how falls prevention can be marketed and positioned in order to increase participation rates in seniors. Market segmentation was used to create unique marketing mixes for individual groups of seniors. The senior market was segmented into frequent falling males and females, and non-falling males and females. Frequent fallers were defined by having experienced 2 or more falls in the past year, where non-fallers had experienced 1 or less falls. This study sought to: (1) measure moderate-vigorous physical activity (PA) levels of a sample of preschoolers; (2) assess which attributes (e.g., space, equipment, policies) within centre-based childcare environments influence PA; and, (3) pilot the methodology to ensure the feasibility of undertaking a full-scale study. Thirty-one preschoolers from five childcare centres across London, Canada participated. Actical® accelerometers were worn by participants for one day during childcare hours to assess activity levels using a 15-second epoch length.
