The high incidence of foot and lower leg injury in adult walkers and runners and its relationship with footwear is a problem that has been investigated exhaustively (Barnes & Smith, 1994; Herzog, 2012; Knapik et al., 2014; Tancred, 1996).Traditionally, measures such as stride length, step length, step width, stride time and step time, as well as kinematic (joint angles) and kinetic (forces) measures have been used to quantify gait (Chang et al., 2006, Diop et al., 2005, Diop et al., 2004, Samson et al., 2009). Falls during step descent are a significant risk for older adults, often hindering independence in daily activities such as stair descent and stepping off curbs. This study examines the effects of gait width and foot angle on stability and control during step descent. PURPOSE: To determine whether a wider gait with a 30-degree foot angle improves stability and reduces the risk of falls, thereby supporting safer and more independent mobility in older adults. It has been demonstrated in previous literature that early-life antibiotic exposure may contribute to metabolic dysfunction related to the development of overweight and obesity later in life. However, its effects on intracellular and extracellular inflammatory cytokines, which are crucial to the immune response, remain unclear. PURPOSE: This study examined the acute responses of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs – representing intracellular cytokines) and plasma (representing extracellular cytokines) following maximal aerobic exercise with NB. Technology for apps that track health is becoming more popular, and many of these apps have not been examined for reliability. PURPOSE: to assess reliability of a commercially available body scanning app for body composition. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (age= 25.9±9.1 years, height= 165.5±10.9 cm, weight= 79.0±20.6 kg) had body composition measured using the MeThreeSixty app two times between three and seven days apart. Pearson’s Product Moment correlations were used to assess interclass reliability from trial 1 to trial 2 and Cronbach’s Alpha was used to assess intraclass reliability. CASE HISTORY: The patient was a 21-year old right-handed collegiate female volleyball player who presented with chronic shoulder pain in her dominant shoulder, which began approximately five years ago. Her previous assessment and treatment included x-rays and MRI imaging, several joint injections, and daily rehabilitation in an attempt to manage her symptoms. College students often walk while carrying backpacks and looking at phones. Changes in gait due to these effects should be identified to warn of possible postural changes. PURPOSE: Determine if a weighted backpack (BA), phone use (PH), and a combination (BP) has any effect on gait parameters while walking.
