Lowered pH conditions in aquatic environments can have a negative impact on many aquatic organisms. In fish it has been shown that acidic water conditions may result in altered gill morphology, reduced reproductive success, changes in locomotor and feeding behavior and even death. Juveniles and adults have been the primary focus of research. However, the larval stage is potentially the most sensitive to toxicity. It is also important ontogenetically as several crucial development thresholds, such as first feeding, occur during this period. The purpose of this study was to address any changes in select organizational and director or CEO attributes between 1989 and 1994, as well as, to determine whether or not college student health services are systematically evaluating their programs and incorporating efficiency measures used in other health care settings. The population of study was student health services at four-year institutions of post-secondary education in the United States. This researcher resurveyed the sample used by Kevin E. This paper is posted to assist graduate nursing students and others who are interested in my early PNI theory development work. The paper documents development and initial testing of a midrange theory of the effects of various nursing interventions on the psychoneuroimmunological (PNI) network. The hypothesized effects of interventions on various immune factors and subsequent health outcomes are explored, with special interest given to the use of PNI theory in nursing. Circadian rhythms have been shown to exist in all studied species and play an important role in their survival. The cockroach is an excellent model organism in which to study circadian systems because of the wealth of background information regarding both its anatomy and circadian system. Clock activity measured electrophysiologically in the cockroach system is 180 degrees out of phase with locomotor activity, with the maximum neural output occurring in the morning, twelve hours prior to the onset of locomotor activity. This inverse relationship of locomotor and neural activity suggests that the clock output may be inhibitory. In vertebrates, the …

In today's competitive world of athletics it is not uncommon to discover a few athletes actively involved in some form of vision enhancement motivated by the promise that the exercises will improve their athletic performance. A review of past and present literature in the area of sports vision revealed that these athletes are performing exercises based upon a very weak scientific foundation. Most of the research investigating the relationship between vision and athletic performance has been plagued by flawed methodology, as well as extremely low numbers of subjects. It has been demonstrated that changes in environmental temperature can influence the resistance of mice to Trypanosoma cruzi (the causative agent of Chagas' disease in humans) infection. This increased resistance is not only reflected by decreased parasitemias and increased longevity but also by enhanced parasite-specific and nonspecific immune responsiveness in infected mice. The antibody response to heterologous antigen has been demonstrated to be greatly enhanced in infected mice held at elevated temperature. However, the parasite-specific antibody response was reported to be lower in infected mice maintained at 36°C than at room temperature (RT) during early stage of infection, although it …

Dietary supplementation with increased levels of vitamin E can enhance the immune system of C3HeB/FeJ mice to enable many of them to survive an otherwise lethal dose of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. To study the role of diet on the course of experimental Chagas' disease, C3HeB/FeJ mice were fed pelleted, synthetic food containing no vitamin E and selenium, 800 IU/kg vitamin E, 2 ppm selenium, or food containing 800 IU/kg vitamin E plus 2 ppm selenium. Mice on synthetic food were compared to control mice fed a commonly used Purina rodent chow # 5001. After diet …

There are four open reading frames (ORF) in three positive-sense translational phases of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus (SBMV). ORF2 codes for a 105 KDa polyprotein which is proposed to be autocatalytically cleaved into smaller functional proteins. Amino acid sequence homology between the SBMV and poliovirus, foot and mouth disease virus, and cowpea mosaic virus reveal that SBMV has a similar genomic organization to picornaviruses with a conserved order: Vpg (Viral protein, genome-linked )-protease-replicase. Two Gln-Ser (QS) amino acid pairs within the 105 KDa polyprotein, C75= 930-936, C60= 1305-1310, are proposed to be the cleavage sites based on 1) similar structural …

This thesis was designed to determine the importance of military recreation programs in improving the quality of life of United States service men and women. The study utilized a survey conducted on Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in the Spring of 1995. The results were analyzed individually and as a group. The findings were that military recreation programs play an important role in the quality of life of United States service men and women and their families. Drug abuse continues to be one of the most significant problems in the United States today. Attempts to understand drug abuse have produced numerous multidimensional prevention and treatment models. These models have resulted in the identification of psychological, social and biological risk factors related to drug abuse. In this study, the risk for drug abuse was assessed in 311 college students. A questionnaire was developed to measure risk. The questionnaire assessed risk for abuse predicted by the following factors: academic performance, coping and psychological health, religiosity, family and peer drug use, and the individual's past and current drug use.
