Students face many challenges as they transition into college. One of the most publicly-known issues is the “Freshman Fifteen,” which refers to the average amount of weight that college freshmen are rumored to gain. Students in college often encounter all-you-can-eat buffets, a culture rife with alcohol consumption, an increased level of stress from classes, and other environmental factors that can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle if not properly addressed. Study Objectives and Research Approach

A Health Impact Assessment (HIA) conducted in 2011-2012 of a proposed Kentucky Worksite Wellness Tax Credit highlighted gaps in the data available on worksite wellness programs in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Conducting a state-wide assessment of worksite wellness programs was a recommendation that resulted from this HIA.

The purpose of the assessment is to:

1) Identify the number of comprehensive worksite health promotion programs in Kentucky.

2) Determine the health needs of worksites in Kentucky.

By Identifying current wellness practices in Kentucky, better tools and support can be provided at a state level to assist …

Feeding practices in some religious communities may decrease childhood obesity. However, there is limited research in these communities to assess maternal perceptions of their children’s weight and feeding patterns. The purpose of this study was to ascertain Old Order Mennonite mothers’ perceptions of their children’s body weight and to examine feeding patterns for their children. Sample: Participants for this descriptive, correlational study were recruited from an Old Order Mennonite community in south central Kentucky. Approximately 22% of all cancer patients in the United States receive chemotherapy. Older adults account for 60 % of new cancer diagnoses in the United States. The aging process is associated with comorbidities that potentially can increase toxicities associated with chemotherapy. These include coronary artery disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Monitoring for toxicities during treatment and intervening when needed allows patients to move forward in their treatment plan. Interruptions in the treatment plan have the potential to adversely affect treatment goals. There has been an increase in the prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears among athletes in the recent years. This paper will seek to discover why ACL injury is so common and if there is any way to minimize these injuries. Research has shown a number of things that can lead to prevention of these injuries, including a correlation between the strength of the hip and thigh muscles and the stability of the ACL. In the elderly, hip fractures from falls often result in decreased quality of life, independence, or functional mobility. Such injuries may lead to hospitalizations, skilled nursing facility admissions, and healthcare costs, yet can be minimized by addressing risk factors of falls. Health education models indicate that assessment of the target population is important prior to the development of an effective program. PURPOSE: To determine among rural adults self-identified learning needs, interest and preferences for fall injury prevention. METHODS: A survey was administered to senior citizens in a rural community. RESULTS: One hundred thirty (n= 130) older adults completed this survey. …

Although Talcott Parsons’s sick role theory, as described in 1951 in The Social System, has been severely criticized for its inapplicability to chronic illnesses, a portion of the theory is still a relevant and necessary factor in terms of understanding and treating chronic illness today. Using data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, this study looks at the individual effects of sex, age, race, cohabitation, education and region of residence on the likelihood of chronically ill patients considering themselves limited in their amount or kind of work as an indicator of sick role adaptation. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the effect of daily activities and structural factors, which act as barriers to seeking health services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are a family of growth factors which includes twenty three proteins. FGFs work as modulators for various cellular activities like mitosis, differentiation and survival. Among the FGF family, human fibroblast growth factor-1 (hFGF-1), which is also known as acidic fibroblast growth factor, is a potent angiogenic agent, involved in the formation of new blood vessels in various tissues. hFGF-1 is regarded as a prototype of the FGF family. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Linked To Essential Hypertension In Kasigau, Kenya, Julia Carol Freeman

Hypertension, or high blood pressure (BP), is an ever-growing epidemic in the developing world. Understanding the genetics behind essential hypertension (EH), or hypertension with no known cause, is especially important. In this study, three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) known to be linked to an increase in susceptibility to EH were quantified from a cohort of Kenyans living in the Kasigau region. The SNPs are located in three genes that are part of the renin angiotensin system, the primary regulatory pathway in humans controlling BP. They include: AGT (rs699), AGTR1 (rs5186), and HSD11β2 (rs5479). Overall, by using a fluorescent-based RT-PCR technique, …
