WKU Archives Collection Inventories

Records regarding the nomination of Lennie Lancaster for the Kentucky Medical Association and Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians awards. The series is arranged in chronological order. A short biographical sketch by Dr. Jerry W. Martin, who made the nominations, is included. Dr. Lancaster's diplomas are in the collection, as well as an oral history interview conducted in 1973 which tells, among other things, of his work to establish Western's first campus bookstore in the summer of 1921. The collection also includes the KMA and KAFP awards, as well as several other certificates and awards.

Common Statistical Tests And Interpretation In Nursing Research, Maria E. Main, Veletta L. Ogaz

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Faith community nurses need a basic understanding of common statistical tests and their interpretation to aid in the appraisal of research for evidence-based practice. The purpose of this article is to review statistical concepts, define common statistical tests, and interpret the results of statistical tests. Common statistical tests that measure differences in groups are independent samples t-test, paired sample t-tests, and analysis of variance. Common statistical tests that measure relationships are Pearson product moment correlation and chi-square. Knowledge of statistical concepts and common statistical tests assist in the appraisal of nursing research for evidence-based practice.

Mapping The Literature Of Pediatric Nursing: Update And Implications For Library Services, Carol L. Watwood

Objective

The purpose of this study was to identify core journals and other types of literature cited in four major pediatric nursing journals and to characterize coverage of these resources in major bibliographic databases. The study was part of the “Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project” of the Medical Library Association's Nursing and Allied Health Resource Section. It updates a similar analysis published in 2006 and determines whether citation patterns have changed over time.

Methods

Attrition can be a serious problem for nursing programs and students. Loss of students during a nursing program or through NCLEX failure is a waste of resources and results in inefficiency in the production of nurses for the workforce. Using data from 341 students admitted over a three-year period, the goal of this study was to determine which factors best predicted student success in a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. These factors were then used to develop an admission formula which was tested retroactively to determine its ability to differentiate between successful and non-successful students. As a dental hygienist, it is important to understand new concepts and techniques that can contribute to a more comfortable setting for patients who experience dental anxiety. Alternative pain control methods can assist in alleviating patient anxiety, therefore, providing a more efficient and relaxed clinical atmosphere for both patient and clinician. Some of the methods discussed are: guided imagery, deep breathing, muscle relaxation, hypnosis, acupressure, essential oil diffusion, audio distraction, and visual stimuli.
