Once-Weekly Single-Set Resistance Training Improves Body Composition And Muscular Strength In Older Adults, Tyler M. Weiss, Malcolm T. Whitehead

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The loss of muscle mass associated with aging, known as sarcopenia, is a public health issue among the older population. Physical activity, in particular resistance training, has been shown to be an effective treatment in countering age-related muscle loss. Time is a primary barrier for adhering to an exercise program, and a time-efficient training modality may be useful for older individuals who perceive time as a barrier to exercise. The Exercise is Medicine Initiative encourages physicians and other health care providers to include physical activity when designing treatment plans. PURPOSE: The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether once-weekly …

Law enforcement officers (LEOs) have a high-stress occupation which is prone to cardiovascular disease (CVD). In fact, data suggest that LEOs have a 1.7-fold higher CVD prevalence versus the general public, in addition to 40.5% of LEOs being classified as obese. However, research is lacking regarding the relationship between body composition, body fat distribution, and blood lipid panels as it pertains to CVD risk in LEOs. PURPOSE: To determine if body composition and fat distribution measures correlate with predictive lipid markers in LEOs. METHODS: Forty-three LEOs (age = 41.7±9.6 yrs; weight = 91.9±15.4 kg; height = 179.8±8.7 cm; …

Nutrition Able: A Lecture-Based Intervention To Promote Nutritional Literacy About Protein Intake In Women, Jeffery Bolte, Alejandra Garcia, Jacob Abalos, Jakson Johnson, Alex Joyce, Christopher Hinds, Jared Tuttle, Jeff Svec

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Sport performance is influenced by sport-specific requirements for body composition. One major predictor of body composition is protein intake. Higher protein intake tends to cause leaner body composition relative to lower protein intake, especially during caloric deficit. In Bexar County, ~72% of the adult population is overweight/obese and 15.5% are diabetic. This suggests that high protein diet could be a high leverage option in the San Antonio population for optimizing body composition for sport performance. Furthermore, late life sporting activity and protein intake is a primary method for mitigating sarcopenia, osteoporosis, fractures, and accidental death in post-menopausal women. PURPOSE: …

PURPOSE: To examine the variation of bone mineral density and body composition between athletes of different sports at Southwestern University. METHODS: One hundred and three Division III NCAA athletes at Southwestern University came to the kinesiology lab in a single session to complete a full body DEXA scan using a GE Lunar Prodigy Dexa Bone Densitometer. The athletes’ bone mineral density, body composition data and health history questionnaire were collected. RESULTS: There was a significant difference of t-scores among the men’s sports means (F(6,41) = 5.599, p < 0.001). There was a significant difference of t-scores among the women’s sports means (F(6, 34) = 2.879, p = 0.022). There was no significant difference of % body fat among the men’s sports means (F(6,42) = 1.787, p = 0.125). There was no significant difference of % body fat among the women’s sports means (F(6,35) = 1.301, p = 0.283). CONCLUSION: This study found a significant difference of T-scores between sports but not …

Relationships Between Anthropometric Variables And The Internal Carotid Blood Flow, Alexandra M. Blades, Jose M. Moris, Ryan Curtis, Christian J. Chang, Vineet K. Paidisetty, Garett Petty, Yunsuk Koh Feb 2023

Relationships Between Anthropometric Variables And The Internal Carotid Blood Flow, Alexandra M. Blades, Jose M. Moris, Ryan Curtis, Christian J. Chang, Vineet K. Paidisetty, Garett Petty, Yunsuk Koh

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Assessment of peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is utilized to examine stroke-symptomatic individuals for ICA stenosis. While a sedentary lifestyle is a common risk factor for ICA stenosis, a deeper understanding of how body composition affects ICA blood flow could provide insights before symptoms appear. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between ICA blood flow and body composition variables. METHODS: ICA blood flow was assessed in eight healthy males (21.88 ± 2.25 years) on three different days to control for possible diurnal variability that could affect blood flow. Participants abstained from caffeine and physical activity for …

Body Mass Index Superior To Body Adiposity Index In Predicting Adiposity In Male Collegiate Athletes, Isaiah Mews, Payton Price, Ruthie Larson, Sofia Harman, Annika Grams, Anthony Acevedo, Zachary Ziegler

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

BMI is moderately correlated with %Fat and has been suggested to be inadequate at predicting overfat status in male collegiate athletes. The Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is an alternative anthropometric measurement suggested to be superior to BMI at predicting adiposity but has not been well assessed within different collegiate sports. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if BAI is superior to BMI in predicting %Fat in male collegiate athletes. METHODS: Collegiate male rugby and baseball players were invited into the laboratory for measurements of height, weight, and %Fat via BOD POD. BAI was calculated as Hip …

An Evaluation Of Static And Dynamic Yoga Training Programs, Garett Petty, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Jose M. Moris, Claire Timon, Yunsuk Koh

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

While traditional yoga programs focus on static stretching and core stability, Essentrics yoga relies more heavily on full-body stretch and strengthening regiments coupled with dynamic movements such as ceiling reaches, side-to-side bends, lunges, and side leg lifts. Through the incorporation of more dynamic movements, Essentrics yoga is thought to elicit greater improvements in overall body composition, flexibility, and balance. PURPOSE: To examine the benefits of a 6-weeks long Essentrics (dynamic) program compared to standard (static) Yoga on body composition, flexibility, and balance. METHODS: Thirty-one participants (24 females and 7 males, age = 20.4 ± 0.2yrs, and BMI = 22.58 ± …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Time restricted feeding (TRF) is a form of intermittent fasting in which all calories are consumed within a certain amount of time (i.e. 6-8 hrs) only water is ingested for the remainder of the day. Previous research shows improvements in body composition and some markers of cardiometabolic health, but it is not clear if these results were due to the decreased eating window, or due to a decrease in caloric intake that typically occurs with fasting protocols. PURPOSE: to assess whether a caloric deficit is necessary to achieve improvements in cardiometabolic health as well as evaluate the impact TRF has …
