Older Adults’ Functional Performance And Health Knowledge After A Combination Exercise, Health Education, And Bingo Game., K. Jason Crandall, Katryn I. Steenbergen
Older Adults’ Functional Performance And Health Knowledge After A Combination Exercise, Health Education, And Bingo Game., K. Jason Crandall, Katryn I. Steenbergen
K. Jason Crandall
Combining exercise, health education, and the game of bingo may help older adults remain independent. The objective was to determine if a 10-week health promotion program (Bingocize®) improves functional performance and health knowledge in older adults. Participants were assigned to experimental (n = 13) or control (n = 14) groups. The intervention was administered twice per week at two independent living facilities. Pre and post functional performance and health knowledge were measured. Mixed between-within subject ANOVA was used to detect differences between groups (p < .05). Improvements were found in all dependent variables except lower-body flexibility, systolic blood pressure, and health knowledge. Adherence was 97.31% ±2.59%. Bingocize® has the potential to help older adults remain independent by improving functional performance. Statistical improvements in health knowledge were not found, but future researchers may explore modifying the health education component or using a different measure of health knowledge to detect changes. Keywords: exercise, older adults, games, health education, health promotion, functional performance, intervention

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Physical Activity Among College Students, Ese B. Aghenta
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Physical Activity Among College Students, Ese B. Aghenta
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The health benefits of physical activity include improved cardiovascular health, reduced rates of diabetes and other metabolic diseases, weight maintenance and improved bone and mental health (United States Department Health & Human Services (2008). According to the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA, 2013), only 20.0% of college students in the United States meet this recommendation. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) attempts to explain the intention to perform behaviors that are not under an individual’s complete volitional control and has been highly utilized in predicting intention and performance of physical activity (Courneya, Nigg & Estabrooks, 1998). …

Child Weight And Feeding Patterns In An Old Order Mennonite Community, Dawn M. Garrett Wright, Maria E. Main, M. Susan Jones
Nursing Faculty Publications
Feeding practices in some religious communities may decrease childhood obesity. However, there is limited research in these communities to assess maternal perceptions of their children’s weight and feeding patterns. The purpose of this study was to ascertain Old Order Mennonite mothers’ perceptions of their children’s body weight and to examine feeding patterns for their children. Sample: Participants for this descriptive, correlational study were recruited from an Old Order Mennonite community in south central Kentucky. Sampling was achieved using a snowball sampling strategy and the use of a community insider. Methods: Body Mass Index was measured for mothers and child participants, …

Factors Influencing The Decision And Ability To Seek Health Services Among Hiv/Aids Patients In Tanzania, Savitri Grover
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Understanding the barriers to treatment for individuals with HIV/AIDS in developing countries could have a major impact on their ability to seek healthcare services. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the effect of daily activities and structural factors, which act as barriers to seeking health services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania.
The study is based on the hypothesis that (1) Individuals living with HIV/AIDS who face both personal and structural barriers have poor health compared to those not facing the barriers. (2) Individuals living with HIV/AIDS demonstrate different decisions and abilities to seek health services …

Forming collaborative, interprofessional partnerships to facilitate the education of future healthcare providers to serve diverse cultures is an overarching goal of Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) and supported by the Institute of Medicine (IOM, 2005). This article describes the process of creating and sustaining a collaborative interprofessional health promotion and educational project with an old order Mennonite (OOM) community in south central Kentucky. This ongoing project began over a decade ago and involves the collaborative efforts of the South Central Kentucky AHEC, the School of Nursing at Western Kentucky University (WKU), a family practice residency program affiliated with the University …
