Public education, although beset with criticism from its inception, is in the midst of weathering its most severe storm. One need only note the newspaper headlines for a week to see the myriad of demands being placed upon the schools. On one hand, there is increased demand for productivity--what Talcott Parsons, in his book, The Social System, would call instrumental education (education for usefulness)--and on the other, there is the insistence upon strengthening humanism in teaching and learning--again drawing on Talcott Parsons--called expressive education (education for self-fulfillment) (1). In summary, the anatomic characteristics of the optic nerve head have been described along the ophthalmoscopic interpretation of these characteristics. One hopes that this information combined with a knowledge of what constitutes glaucomatous abnormality in the optic disc will encourage the ophthalmic as well as non-ophthalmic practitioner to evaluate the optic nerve head and recognize those which are suspicious of glaucoma.

The diagnosis of an esotropic patient as having Duane's syndrome is not always clinically evident. There has been a paucity of attention directed to the size of the esodeviation in patients with this syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to point out the diagnostic significance of the size of the primary deviation in patients with, or suspected of having Duane's syndrome.

Treatment Of Hypertropia With Relaxing Conjugate Vertical Prisms, Marina P. Meyers

Certain selected cases of hypertropia can be permanently corrected with identical prisms placed base up over each eye. A child was first successfully treated by this method more than 14 years ago, and the excellent long-term outcome in her case, as well as generally encouraging results in a series of over 100 subsequent patients, suggest that in suitable cases the double vertical prism may be a useful addition to the methods available for the treatment of hypertropia.

Opthalmic Teaching Problems: The Ayes Have It, Robert G. King Jr.

The problems associated with the teaching of ophthalmology to medical students in today's university setting are by no means unique to ophthalmology. However, these problems are more severe in small departments such as ophthalmology and are more disruptive to the teaching process than similar problems in larger departments. The purpose of this paper is to identify some of the more important teaching problems and propose solutions to them.

In recent years renal homotransplantation has become more frequently used in the treatment of terminal renal disease in man. By carefully selecting donors with the aid of tissue compatibility tests and employing immunosuppressive drugs, these transplants have become increasingly more successful. It is true, however, that even with good tissue match-up and drug treatment rejection episodes occur, frequently within the first two-postsurgical weeks. The majority of these rejection crises may be reversed by increasing drug dosages and occasionally applying x-irradiation to the area of the transplant. In other cases rejection by the recipient is responsible for cessation of function of …

The Anatomical Relationships, Ultrastructure, And Function Of The Pineal Gland In Some Common Laboratory Rodents, Joseph Chester Gregorek

The pineal complex of rodents is made up of a pineal organ which developmentally always originates from the area between the habenular and posterior commissure and a pineal sac which is continuous with the choroid plexus of the third ventricle. This sac appears to be identical to the choroid plexus at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pineal sac abuts the deep and superficial pineal organs of the golden hamster. In the PET mouse, gerbil, kangaroo rat and Chinese hamster, the sac is contiguous with only small areas of pinealocytes. This sac never abuts true pineal parenchyma in the …

The students' ability to guess correctly questions on a multiple choice examination creates a problem in the determination of the number of questions the students actually knew. Therefore, it is not unlikely that mistakes will be made when grades are assigned. In this paper, a method for calculating the probability of misclassification of students as a result of a multiple choice test in which the assumption of a uniform guessing distribution is relaxed has been discussed and illustrated. Psychiatrists have long held that there should be more psychiatry in general medicine, and the nonpsychiatric physicians have said that there should be much more medicine in psychiatry. Both groups have been perfectly correct and are being told by the consuming population that there must be more sociology in each of them. The future psychiatrist must and will work with his colleagues in medicine, not to achieve a utopia, but at least to approach this desirable situation in some degree.

The history of drug abuse is as long as history. While all drugs are being abused, this paper has attempted only to elucidate some of the psychological reasons why the western adolescent might be attracted to excessive drug use or experimentation. There has grown in the past 8 years a great interest in drugs which produce an altered state of consciousness. It is the opinion of this writer that the adolescent years may be the worst years to experiment with the strong hallucinogens like LSD, mescaline, or psilocybin. When we record atrial activity on the His bundle electrogram we are recording from the area of the atrium which is around the tricuspid valve, that is, the lower part of the right atrium. The normal range of conduction time from the region of the sinus node to the low right atrium is about 25 to 45 milliseconds.
