All of us at one time or another have been involved either professionally or perhaps personally with Sudden Infant Death. My first experience dates back to one of my brother’s children who was a victim of Sudden Infant Death in the 1950s. My brother and his wife had had two daughters prior to that, and this child was the male infant, the heir to the throne. I will talk about setting up a program for nursing visits to SIDS parents and its importance. The first thing the parents need to know is what their baby died of; they need to know facts about SIDS, how to relieve their guilt reactions, and a set of guidelines for grief reactions. A four-point management system has been set up by the National SIDS Foundation and includes (1) an autopsy, (2) notification of cause of death within 24 to 48 hours, (3) use of SIDS as the cause of death on the death certificate when appropriate, and (4) availability of …

A Network Thermodynamic Two-Port Element To Represent The Coupled Flow Of Salt And Current. Improved Alternative For The Equivalent Circuit, D. C. Mikulecky

A two-port for coupled salt and current flow is created by using the network thermodynamic approach in the same manner as that for coupled solute and volume flow (Mikulecky et al., 1977b; Mikulecky, 1977). This electrochemical two-port has distinct advantages over the equivalent circuit representation and overcomes difficulties pointed out by Finkelstein and Mauro (1963). The electrochemical two-port is used to produce a schematic diagram of the coupled flows through a tissue. The network is superimposable on the tissue morphology and preserves the physical qualities of the flows and forces in each part of an organized structure (e.g., an epithelium). …

A Network Thermodynamic Approach To Compartmental Analysis: Na+ Transients In Frog Skin, D. C. Mikulecky, E. G. Huf, S. R. Thomas

We introduce a general network thermodynamic method for compartmental analysis which uses a compartmental model of sodium flows through frog skin as an illustrative example (Huf and Howell, 1974a). We use network thermodynamics (Mikulecky et al., 1977b) to formulate the problem, and a circuit simulation program (ASTEC 2, SPICE2, or PCAP) for computation. In this way, the compartment concentrations and net fluxes between compartments are readily obtained for a set of experimental conditions involving a square-wave pulse of labeled sodium at the outer surface of the skin. This study explored the time relationship of life change events in young adult patients with minor injuries for which medical attention was sought in an emergency department (ED). Life change events are those occurrences in life which require an alteration in a person's adaptive and coping responses to ease the discomfort associated with the change. Too much change without an increase in adaptation responses may cause loss of control. The manifestation of loss of control under evaluation in this study was the occurrence of a minor injury.

A paucity of research exists in the strength training and aging literature. Hettinger (1958) reported that strength declined with age and that older persons gained less with strength training than younger persons. This study altered Hettinger's design by using a different muscle and a different strengthening routine. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of isometric strength training of the non-dominant left abductor digiti minimi muscles of young subjects and old subjects. The ten young female subjects, mean age 22.6 years, were all nursing students. The ten older female subjects, mean age 69.2 years, did not constitute …

Evaluation Of An Abnormal Urinalysis In The Asymptomatic Patient, Douglas M. Landwehr

Physicians are occasionally presented with the problem of evaluating a patient who has an abnormal urinalysis but who has no other sign or symptom of genitourinary (GU) tract disease. For example, patients may present with hematuria, pyuria or slight proteinuria, but they may have no other clinical or laboratory abnormality to suggest glomerulonephritis, renal failure, urinary tract infection, obstruction, hypertension, or stones. There are a wide variety of lesions which may produce such isolated abnormalities, and a rational approach is indispensable in preparing an efficient and definitive diagnostic plan.

Prior to the recent reports of Sawyer et al and Elzay et al on the characteristics and dental health status of ancient Peruvian cultures, only Stewart, Leigh, and Goaz and Miller had reported on the dental morphology and pathology of the pre-Columbian Peruvian Indians. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dental health of these ancient peoples to further our understanding of the development of dental diseases. This paper follows up and expands the report of Elzay et al to include another culture and completely new specimens, with a look at primary dentitions not previously available for study.

Abstract

Industrial workers exposed to the organochlorine pesticide, chlordecone (Kepone), had signs of toxicity in several organs. The extent of toxicity was proportional to the levels of this chemical in the tissues. In 22 patients, chlordecone was eliminated slowly from blood (half time of 165±27 days — mean ± S.E.M.) and fat (half time of 125 days, with a range of 97 to 177), chiefly in the stool. Output of chlordecone in bile was 10 to 20 times greater than in stool, suggesting that chlordecone is reabsorbed in the intestine. Abstract

We studied lymphocyte capping in 61 patients with Duchenne, Becker, limb-girdle, facioscapulohumeral and congenital muscular dystrophies. All showed a markedly diminished percentage of capped cells when compared with 86 normal controls, providing support for previous evidence that an alteration in membrane fluidity may be a common pathogenic feature in several genetically distinct forms of proximal muscular dystrophy.

Heterozygous carriers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy showed diminished capping that was indistinguishable from that of afflicted males and was often present even when serum enzyme levels were normal. Studies in 25 families with 16 suspected sporadic cases indicated that no more than …

The flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope was introduced in Japan by Dr. Shigeto Ikeda in the mid-1960s and became available for clinical use in the United States around 1970. The application of this technique represents one fo the most significant advances for the diagnosis and management of chest diseases as it enables the physician to directly visualize the tracheobronchial tree and obtain diagnostic specimens from regions of the lung previously inaccessible to the rigid bronchoscope. Except for suppleural lesions, fiberoptic bronchoscopy is the surgical procedure of choice in the evaluation of many pulmonary lesions.
