Nutritional Support For Oncology Patients: Role For The Pcp, Annabelle S. Feist
Nutritional Support For Oncology Patients: Role For The Pcp, Annabelle S. Feist
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Adequate nutrition is a key prognostic factor in the treatment outcomes of patients with cancer diagnoses. Despite the increased morbidity and mortality of malnutrition, the importance of nutrition for oncology patients is often not well communicated and not well understood by patients. Part of this issue stems from the limited information most patient can absorb at any given doctors appointment, especially regarding their cancer. Primary care providers hold a unique position to fill this gap and have the information be heard and retained given their usual role in addressing overall health. This project compiles resources in an easily accessible and …
Colorectal Cancer Screening In The Primary Care Setting: Community Outreach To Improve Screening Rates, Liberty J. Dupuis
Colorectal Cancer Screening In The Primary Care Setting: Community Outreach To Improve Screening Rates, Liberty J. Dupuis
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of death from cancer in men and women in the U.S. and worldwide. Screening for colorectal cancer beginning at age 45 offers the opportunity for early intervention and decisive treatment for precancerous colon polyps as well as the early identification of cancer. This project aims to assess preferences around recommendations for colorectal cancer screening tests amongst a group of primary care providers as well as barriers that are commonly cited to those providers by patients who do not undergo or complete screening. The results of the provider survey were used to make recommendations for …
Preventive Medicine Screening Measures, Isaac Adams
Preventive Medicine Screening Measures, Isaac Adams
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
In order to make progress towards long-term health on a community level, it is imperative to address health needs on a population basis and using a preventive strategy to prevent the development of more serious illness. With this in mind, this project aimed to create a poster providing easy to understand information to patients with regard to health screenings. Specifically, it addressed screenings for diabetes and pre diabetes, colon cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer.
Accessibility Of Nutritious And Healthy Foods To Older Adults, Kristen Wright
Accessibility Of Nutritious And Healthy Foods To Older Adults, Kristen Wright
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Food insecurity rates are high among older adults who have chronic conditions and/or are homebound. These patients have functional limitations, comorbidities limiting their mobility, and often are socially isolated or live alone, all of which impact their ability to access or make healthy meals. As food insecurity rises, so do the health care costs related to inaccessibility to healthy food, involving the increased risk or prevalence of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. This project aimed to understand the barriers older adults face in accessing and making healthy meals, and to educate health care providers and patients on recognizing …
Community Health Interventions To Reduce The Burden Of Radon-Related Lung Cancer, Benjamin Weaver
Community Health Interventions To Reduce The Burden Of Radon-Related Lung Cancer, Benjamin Weaver
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. One in seven homes in Vermont has elevated levels of radon, but most patients are unaware of radon as a risk factor for lung cancer or that radon testing and mitigation services are available to them. To promote increased testing and mitigation of radon we screened patients presenting to a Family Medicine practice in Vermont about whether they had had these services done in their home. We also developed a patient education resource for providers to give to patients who had more questions about radon …
Addressing Common Concerns About Hpv Vaccination, Gia R. Eapen
Addressing Common Concerns About Hpv Vaccination, Gia R. Eapen
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
The HPV vaccine is the only vaccine that can prevent the formation of cancer, and yet it is sometimes refused by parents due to misconceptions and misinformation. This project addresses some of the common barriers to HPV vaccination and provides information about why the HPV vaccination is an essential part of adolescent preventative medicine.
Exosomes And Their Role In Asbestos Exposure And Mesothelioma, Phillip Blake Munson
Exosomes And Their Role In Asbestos Exposure And Mesothelioma, Phillip Blake Munson
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a locally invasive and highly aggressive cancer arising on the mesothelial surface of organ cavities (mainly pleural) as a direct result of asbestos exposure. The latency period of MM is long (20-50yrs) after initial asbestos exposure, and the prognostic outcomes are dismal with median life expectancy of 6-12 months post-diagnosis. There are no useful biomarkers for early MM diagnosis, no successful therapeutic interventions. These vast voids of knowledge led to our hypotheses that secreted vesicles, termed exosomes, play an important role in MM development and tumorigenic properties. Exosomes are nano-sized particles secreted from all cell types …
Prostate Cancer: Patient Education For Changing Guidelines, Richard Mendez
Prostate Cancer: Patient Education For Changing Guidelines, Richard Mendez
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
In May 2012 United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against prostate cancer screening, Grade D, with no other recommendation for providers. Since prostate cancer continues to be among the most common cancer in the United States among men, patients were exposed to previous guidelines during routine visits and require updated educational materials for primary care visits.
Thyroid Hormone Receptor Ss (Trß) Regulation Of Runt-Related Transcription Factor 2 (Runx2) In Thyroid Tumorigenesis: Determination Of The Trß Nuclear Protein Complexes That Associate With The Runx2 Gene., Thomas Howland Taber
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Thyroid Tumorigenesis is typically a well understood process, with well delineated oncogenic factors. Follicular and papillary thyroid cancers are typically survivable, with 5-year survival rates being >95% for Stage I-III of both cancer types. Anaplastic thyroid cancer, in contrast, lacks this prognosis, and is the most lethal of all endocrine-related cancers. The median survival time after a diagnosis is generally between 6-8 months, with a 5-year survival rate of <10%. Current treatment for anaplastic thyroid cancers routinely meet roadblocks, as resistance is quickly developed. Even non-discriminatory kinase inactivators, such as sorafenib, which are generally considered a drug of last resort, are unable to effect survival rates. As such, there is a clear need for further investigation of the causes of anaplastic thyroid cancer mechanisms.
Previous work in the Carr lab revealed a novel regulatory pathway of an oncogene that is associated with several other endocrine-related cancers, as well as other non-endocrine-related cancers. Specifically, the Runt-related …

Approaching Refusal Of Colorectal Cancer Screening, Greg Whitcher
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
This project aimed to investigate the reasons why patients refuse colonoscopy, the screening rates for colonoscopy, alternatives to colonoscopy and methods primary care physicians can use to encourage patients to have colorectal cancer screening.
Provider Education: Managing Depression In Cancer Patients, Nicole Leonard
Provider Education: Managing Depression In Cancer Patients, Nicole Leonard
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Depression is more prevalent and less often treated in cancer patients compared to the general population. Cancer can increase the risk of depression in multiple different ways, but depression can also increase the risk of cancer. Untreated depression in cancer patients can increase the risk of metastasis and worsen prognosis. The purpose of this project is to educate providers on the connection between mental health and cancer as well as provide them resources on how to approach and manage patients with cancer and depression.
Prostate Cancer: Screening, Current Guidelines And Patient Education, Timothy F. Flanagan
Prostate Cancer: Screening, Current Guidelines And Patient Education, Timothy F. Flanagan
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Recent changes in prostate cancer screening guidelines may create an opportunity for patient education. By creating a succinct hand-out on prostate cancer screening, providers enable their patients to understand screening, and provide sites with opportunities for further learning.

Confronting Barriers To Exercise In Patients With Chronic Health: Community Health Improvement Project In The Lewiston/Auburn Area Concerns, Marie R. Lemay
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, but most individuals with chronic disease do not reach this goal despite its numerous health benefits. Research has shown that scheduled exercise programs and exercise partners help individuals to sustain their exercise goals. Using this premise of group mentality individuals affected from cancer at the Dempsey center and patients attending CMMC’s diabetes group in Lewiston ME were polled about exercise self –efficacy and barriers to exercise. Subsequently, a one-time walking event was offered to the diabetes group and a phone-tree was introduced to one yoga class at …

Mechanoregulation Of Leading Edge Pka Activity During Ovarian Cancer Cell Migration, Andrew J. Mckenzie
Mechanoregulation Of Leading Edge Pka Activity During Ovarian Cancer Cell Migration, Andrew J. Mckenzie
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all the gynecologic cancers and is known for its clinically occult and asymptomatic dissemination. Most ovarian malignancies are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease and the high rate of morbidity is thought to be due, in part, to the highly metastatic nature of ovarian carcinomas. Cancer metastasis relies on the ability of cells to migrate away from primary tumors and invade into target tissues. Though the processes are distinct, cancer cell invasion relies on the underlying migration machinery to invade target tissues.
Cell migration requires the coordinated effort of numerous spatially-regulated signaling …
