Current Status Of Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Adults With And Without Cognitive Disabilities In The United States, 2022, Elma Vasconcelos

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Objective: Evaluate the prevalence of non-compliance with colorectal cancer screening guidelines among US adults aged 45-75, comparing individuals with cognitive disabilities to those without.

Methods: This study utilized data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, which uses weighted and complex survey sampling methodologies. Participants under 45 were excluded, resulting in a study sample of 220,879. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the prevalence odds ratio of colorectal cancer screening among individuals with and without cognitive disabilities.

While research is abundant on the individual topics of caring for vulnerable populations in a disaster, Autism Spectrum Disorder. There is little guidance available that ties these together and deals directly with the emergency sheltering of minors on the autism spectrum. The information gap extends to preparedness for caregivers of children on the spectrum, shelter workers, and community members. This vulnerable population is known to have specific needs during disasters when mass sheltering is needed. In our medical school, we designed an innovative interprofessional education (IPE) experience to prepare medical students for collaborative healthcare. Through a family-centered NICU high-risk follow-up clinic, students observed and engaged with a diverse team, including a developmental specialist, neonatal nurse practitioner, physician, and nurse. We developed a rubric based on the four IPEC competencies, evaluating students’ understanding before and after the rotation. Results from 118 participants showed significant improvement (p < .001) across competencies, with large effect sizes (Cohen's d: 1.02 to 2.14). This experience highlights the effectiveness of clinical modeling in enhancing interprofessional practice skills among medical students.
