Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous disease marked by a highly variable clinical course and response to therapy. The average age of individuals diagnosed with AML is approximately 69 years old. Due to age of the patient and how quickly the disease progresses, many are unable to receive therapy, leading to death between 4 and 12 weeks after diagnosis. More effective and less cytotoxic treatments are crucial for those diagnosed with AML. Therefore my work has been focused on understanding genetic pathways altered within AML to develop new-targeted therapies. Specifically, I have been studying microRNAs (miR), which regulate proteins …
Application Of The Rasch Model To Measure Five Dimensions Of Wellness In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Kelley A. Strout Dr
Application Of The Rasch Model To Measure Five Dimensions Of Wellness In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Kelley A. Strout Dr
Nursing Faculty Scholarship
Background and Purpose: Nurse researchers and practicing nurses need reliable and valid instruments to measure key clinical concepts. The purpose of this research was to develop an innovative method to measure dimensions of wellness among older adults. Method: A sample of 5,604 community-dwelling older adults was drawn from members of the COLLAGE consortium. The Wellness Assessment Tool (WEL) of the COLLAGE assessment system provided the data used to create the scores. Application of the Rasch analysis and Masters' partial credit method resulted in logit values for each item within the five dimensions of wellness as well as logit values for …

The formation of new vasculature is an essential process, but can also be utilized by cancerous cells. Angiogenesis requires the directed migration of the endothelial cells lining the nascent blood vessels. This process is largely mediated by integrin, which plays a key role in the interplay between sensing a force in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and transducing this signal, a process termed mechanotransduction. Through cell-ECM focal adhesions, integrin mediates the signaling both into and out of the cell, promoting growth of focal adhesions and subsequent cell spreading and migration. In order to study focal adhesion dynamics related to force, we …

Summary findings
-
In 2010, the total estimated cost of substance abuse in Maine was $1.403 billion.
-
This $1.403 billion translates into a cost equaling $1,057 for every resident of Maine.
-
This was a 56.2% increase from 2005.
-
Substance abuse treatment ($47.0 million) comprised the smallest proportion of total cost (3.4%), while mortality, $409.6 million, comprised the largest proportion of costs (24.8%).

Maine Policy Review
Health sciences librarians serve as uniquely trained reference librarians who specialize in the research and dissemination of medical and health information and are an important link to quality health information for patients and consumers. The authors describe how the landscape of health sciences librarianship is constantly changing as new technology emerges, along with librarians' roles within the healthcare system.
