Background/aim: To detect the extent to which physical impairments are observed in patients with lung cancer awaiting lung surgery, exercise capacity, muscle strength, physical activity, dyspnea, and quality of life (QOL) were objectively compared between the patients and healthy individuals in current study. Materials and methods: Patients with lung cancer (n = 26) and healthy individuals (n = 21) were included. Exercise capacity, respiratory (maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP)) and quadriceps femoris muscle strength, physical activity, dyspnea and QOL were evaluated using 6-min walk test (6-MWT), a mouth pressure device, a hand-held dynamometer, a metabolic holter device, …

Background: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a systemic autoinflammatory disease that causes recurrent attacks of fever, polyserositis, arthritis or skin eruptions, resulting in pain in the abdomen, muscles, joints and chest. All of these might lead to a reduction in exercise capacity, muscle strength, physical activity level (PAL) and quality of life (QoL). Therefore, assesment of these parameters are important. The aim of this study was to assess exercise capacity, muscle strength, PAL, and QoL in patients with FMF as compared to controls. Materials and methods: A total of 40 subjects with FMF and 36 healthy control subjects participated in …

Background/aim: Respiratory and peripheral muscle strength are reduced in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). There is a well-known correlation between handgrip strength (HGS) and strenght extremity muscles. Our aim in this study was to measure HGS and investigate the related factors in COPD patients with exacerbation.Materials and methods: Subjects with COPD exacerbation (n = 101) and stable COPD (n = 22), and subjects without COPD (n = 201), were enrolled in this study. Age, sex, and body mass index were similar. HGS was measured using a Vigorimeter. Pulmonary function tests and 6-min walk tests were performed. Results: The mean HGS was …

The Effect Of Hip And Knee Exercises On Pain, Function, And Strength In Patientswith Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Mehtap Şahi̇n, Fi̇kri̇ye Fi̇gen Ayhan, Pinar Borman, Hüseyi̇n Atasoy Jan 2016

The Effect Of Hip And Knee Exercises On Pain, Function, And Strength In Patientswith Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Mehtap Şahi̇n, Fi̇kri̇ye Fi̇gen Ayhan, Pinar Borman, Hüseyi̇n Atasoy

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The role of hip muscles in the rehabilitation of patellofemoral pain syndrome has recently received interest. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiencies of hip exercises alongside knee exercises versus only knee exercises on pain, function, and isokinetic muscle strength in patients with this syndrome. Materials and methods: Fifty-five young female patients (mean age: 34.1 ± 6.2 years; mean BMI: 25.9 ± 3.9 kg/m2) with patellofemoral pain syndrome were included. The patients were randomized into groups of hip-and-knee exercises and knee-only exercise programs for 6 weeks with a total of 30 sessions at the clinic. Both …
