Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and coronary stenting had a poor prognosis. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of CHA2 DS2 -VASc score for predicting and grading adverse clinical outcomes in this population. Materials and methods: We reviewed the clinical data of all patients with previously documented nonvalvular AF who underwent coronary stenting between January 2010 and June 2015 in 12 hospitals of Beijing, China. The study population was divided into three groups: 1) Low CHA2 DS2 -VASc score, ≦ 2 points, 2) Intermediate score, 3-4 points, and 3) High score, ≧ 5 points. Major adverse cardiac/cerebrovascular events …

The Relationship Between Morning Blood Pressure Surge And Asymptomatic Episodes Of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation In Patients With Systemic Arterial Hypertension, Ümmü Taş, Sedat Taş, İdi̇l Yavuz Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Morning Blood Pressure Surge And Asymptomatic Episodes Of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation In Patients With Systemic Arterial Hypertension, Ümmü Taş, Sedat Taş, İdi̇l Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hypertension is a known risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation. However, there is limited data to investigate the association between morning blood pressure surge (MBPS) and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). We conducted the present study to determine whether there is a relationship between asymptomatic PAF and MBPS and whether MBPS may be a predictor of asymptomatic PAF episodes. Materials and methods: This prospective study comprised 264 adult patients who were newly diagnosed with essential hypertension or were previously diagnosed but not receiving regular antihypertensive therapy. We evaluated the patients in 2 groups according to their 24-h electrocardiography monitoring results: …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The presence of atrial fibrosis has already been known as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) development. We aimed to evaluate atrial fibrosis with previously defined three different methods, which were cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (C-MRI), echocardiographic strain imaging, and biomarkers and show the relationship between these methods in patients with AF scheduled for cryoballoon ablation. Materials and methods: A total of 30 patients were enrolled. Atrial T1 relaxation durations were measured using C-MRI before the procedure of atrial fibrillation catheter ablation. Fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) levels were measured at serum derived from …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Ticagrelor is a drug widely used in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) that specifically increases the plasma level of adenosine, which is likely to cause atrial fibrillation (AF). Therefore, in this study we aimed to investigate the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic predictors of AF development after P2Y12 receptor antagonists in ACS patients.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 831 patients with ACS (486 [58.5%] with ST elevated myocardial infarction [STEMI] and 345 [41.5%] with non-ST elevated myocardial infarction [NSTEMI]). Patients were divided into ticagrelor (n = 410) and clopidogrel (n = 421) groups. P wave properties including P wave …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Recovery after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) can be complicated, leading to postoperative morbidity. The roles of hematologic and surgery-related parameters are important. The main purpose of this study is to determine the role of preoperative and postcardiopulmonary bypass neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on postoperative recovery. Materials and methods: Sixty-two patients aged between 41 and 80 years, scheduled for elective CABG surgery with ASA I-II risk and without a history of preoperative blood transfusion, were included in the study. Three patients were excluded due to their need for additional surgical procedures other than CABG. The patients were divided into …

Impact Of Ggcx Polymorphisms On Warfarin Dose Requirements In Atrial Fibrillation Patients, Nian-Xin Jiang, Ying-Hui Xu, Jing-Wen Xia, Bing Jiang, Yan-Song Li

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Warfarin is a common anticoagulant with large interindividual differences and a narrow therapeutic range. The polymorphisms of gamma-glutamyl carboxylase (GGCX) are important genetic factors for warfarin dose requirements. Materials and methods: Polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing methods were used to detect the GGCX rs699664 genotype in 215 atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with warfarin administration. The effects on warfarin dose by different genotypes were analyzed. A warfarin dosing algorithm was developed based on age, height, CYP2C9, VKORC1, and GGCX genotype. Results: In 215 AF patients, there were 104 cases of wild-type GG genotype (48.4%), 92 cases of GA genotype …

There are various instruments to assess quality of life (QoL) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the University of Toronto Atrial Fibrillation Severity Scale (AFSS). Materials and methods: The AFSS and Short Form-36 (SF-36) were completed by 130 patients with documented AF. The Canadian Cardiovascular Society Severity in Atrial Fibrillation (SAF) scale and European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) scale were also utilized by the attending physicians. To assess test-retest reliability, the AFSS was readministered to 47 clinically stable patients at a 1-month follow-up …

Materials and methods: Patients who presented to our outpatient clinic with the diagnosis of AF between September 2008 and October 2009 were enrolled. The patients were classified according to the CHADS2 risk scoring system recommended by the AHA/ACC/ESC guidelines for the classification of stroke risk in non-valvular AF patients. The probable variables influencing the use of warfarin were determined as age, sex, income level, healthcare coverage, lifestyle, place …

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation, Oxidative Stress, And Inflammation, Mehmet Özaydin Jan 2011

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation, Oxidative Stress, And Inflammation, Mehmet Özaydin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most common complication of cardiac surgery. It is associated with increased complication rates. Recent trials have suggested that inflammation and oxidative stress have key roles in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation. Current evidence evaluating the use of antiinflammatory and antioxidant agents, including statins, corticosteroids, N-acetylcysteine, vitamin C, and fish oil, to prevent postoperative atrial fibrillation is promising. However, larger randomized, controlled trials comparing different dose regimens are needed.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: As in hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmias can be seen in hypothyroidism. In this study, we measured P wave dispersion among hypothyroid patients to evaluate atrial fibrillation risk. Methods: 75 patients who received first time diagnosis of hypothyroidism and 40 normal control patients were included in this study. Each patient had echocardiographic and electrocardiographic studies were carried out. Groups were compared for statistically significant difference in P wave dispersion, minimum P wave duration and maximum P wave duration. Results: The groups were similar in echocardiographic and electrocardiograpic features. P wave dispersion was significantly higher in the hypothyroid group compared to normal …
