Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The pharmacokinetics of oxytetracycline (OTC) were investigated in rainbow trout in freshwater at 10.5 ^oC. A group of 70 fish received OTC, an intravascular injection (i.v.) of 5 mg/kg body weight. Another group of 105 fish were fed medicated feed containing a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight. OTC plasma concentrations were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic parameters were described by a two-compartment open model giving distribution half-lives of 0.907 h and 16.058 h, and elimination half-lives of 33.5 h and 27 h for i.v. and oral administration of OTC, respectively. After i.v. administration of OTC, other …

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek Jan 2003

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The mammalian adrenal gland in the developmental stage provides excellent system for studying the role(s) of lectins in the foetal period because the adrenal gland is composed of two separate endocrine organs which differ in embryologic origin, type of secretion, and function. There is no information on the presence of galectin-1 or galectin-1 reactive glycoconjugates in the development of the bovine adrenal gland. Therefore, the present study focused on this protein. For separation of galectin-1 dialysis, affinity chromatography and SDS-PAGE were used. To monitor the localisation of galectin-1 and its epitopes immunhistochemistry was used. A single 14-kD band comigrated with …

Morphological And Biophysical Properties Of The Cells Involving The Reflexive Orienting Responses Of The Eye, Head And Body, Ramazan Bal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The intrinsic membrane properties of the neurons in the cortices of the inferior colliculus were studied in 300-µm transversal slices. The membrane properties, including the sub- and superthreshold, of the neurons were determined by intracellular stimulations with current injections. Of 49 intracellularly recorded neurons, 21 were successfully stained with intracellular biocytin injection. Morphologically all of the 21 neurons were identified as multipolar. Physiologically three firing patterns (onset, regular and adapting) were identified on the basis of response patterns to depolarizing current injections. Onset neurons had a non-linear, and regular and adapting neurons had linear current-voltage relationships. In conclusion, with the …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The optimum UV duration times of eggs were examined in order to develop a simple and safe method for inducing androgenetic development in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The yield of androgenetic haploid O. niloticus to the pigmentation stage was 18.53 ± 5.3% (relative to controls) with an optimal UV irradiation dose of 540 Jm^{-2} (at 150 µWcm^{-2 }) for 6 min. Most embryos developing after fertilisation with normal spermatozoa showed abnormal morphology and a haploid number of chromosomes (n = 22). The success of oocyte denucleation was also assessed by using the recessive "blond" skin pigmentation character.

Color-Coded Duplex Sonography Of Abdominal Blood Vessels In Dogs, Hali̇l Selçuk Bi̇ri̇ci̇k, Adi̇l Öztürk, Ni̇hat Şindak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to demonstrate normal duplex patterns of extra (aorta abdominalis, vena cava caudalis) and intraparenchymatous (vena porta, vena hepatica, renal interlober and splenic artery) vessels with color-coded duplex ultrasonography in healthy dogs. While the wave form of the intraparenchymatous vessels like the vena cava caudalis and hepatic vein were mainly affected by the pressure conditions of the intrathoracic and intraabdominal pressure changes due to respiration and cardiac pulsations, portal blood flow was not affected. The wave form of the aorta abdominalis was triphasic due to tissue resistance. It was biphasic in the renal interlober and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Different ratios of sodium and potassium nitrate were added to salt (control, 1, 2 and 3%) during the salting process and its effect on the chemical and microbiological quality was investigated in different stages of Turkish pastrami (pastırma) production (before and after salting, and before and after cumin paste application). According to the chemical analysis results, the moisture and salt ratio, pH and a_w values were not significantly different between the groups (P > 0.05) but the nitrate and nitrite values were significantly different according to the nitrate ratio (P < 0.05). Before the salting of samples, Staphyococcus/Micrococcus numbers were significantly different between the groups (P < 0.05). In the other stages of production, no differences were found between the groups (P > 0.05). Except for the stages before salting, no coliform-group bacteria growth …

The chickens were taken from various sites located in regions of intensive poultry production in Turkey. This disease is quite frequently encountered in Turkey and is still one of the major causes of economic losses in the poultry industry. The material of this study was composed of various organ samples collected from MD-suspected hens from various houses located …

Gonad Histology And Spawning Pattern Of The White Grouper (Epinephelus Aeneus) From İskenderun Bay (Turkey), Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe, İbrahi̇m Cengi̇zler, A. Argun Özak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The gonad histology and spawning pattern of the white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus) were determined from fish sampled from commercial catches. Histological, microscopic and macroscopic techniques were used to examine the ovaries of E. aeneus. A six stage maturity scale based on morphology was proposed to classify ovarian development. The results showed that the white grouper has an asynchronous mode of ovarian development, and the histological study of oocyte development in the white grouper indicated that two types of inclusion, first lipid and then protein, are formed during vitellogenesis. Towards maturation, protein granules and lipid droplets increased in size and number …

Influence Of Dietary Energy Level On Stomach Emptying And Appetite Revival Rates In Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Ahmet Adem Teki̇nay, Yusuf Güner, Simon John Davies

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

D1, D2 and D3 diets containing 15.5, 12.5 and 9.0 MJ kg^{-1} digestible energy concentrations were offered to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792), and the rates of gastric evacuation and feed intake were determined. Gastric evacuation determinations were achieved by slaughtering eight fish every 6 h until no residue was found in the cardiac stomach. Return of appetite experiments were conducted by re-feeding groups of trout every 6 h following the first feeding. The data provided from each process was modelled by regression analysis and compared statistically. Square root equations best explained the gastric evacuation data, whereas first-order models …

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Faecal samples collected from 206 chickens, 170 sheep and 130 cattle were investigated for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in animals slaughtered at local abattoirs in Elazığ. The prevalance of L. monocytogenes was 4.36% in chickens, 0.58% in sheep and 1.53% in cattle. Of the 12 L. monocytogenes isolates, seven (58.33%) and five (41.66%) belonged to serotypes 1 and 4, respectively. Other species isolated were L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. murrayi and L. grayi. These results indicate that animal faeces could be a source of contamination of carcasses with L. monocytogenes and may lead to foodborne listeriosis.
