Emotional Intelligence: Improving The Delivery Of Quality Patient Care, Genesis Serrano, Angela Putt Nov 2021

Emotional Intelligence: Improving The Delivery Of Quality Patient Care, Genesis Serrano, Angela Putt

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize one’s own emotions and that of others when responding to a situation. It has a long-standing reputation for predicting positive outcomes in many fields and occupations. Emotional intelligence has also had a long-standing reputation for taking the backseat in education. Nursing is no exception. With many nurses having little to no knowledge of anticipating patient needs or what it means to be empathetic, it can impact the patient’s perception of patient care. Often, the skill of being emotionally intelligent is either learned on the job through experience, innately in the character of …

A Good Life: Palliative Care In The World Of Dementia, Nicola Farmer Nov 2021

A Good Life: Palliative Care In The World Of Dementia, Nicola Farmer

Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research

Objective: The World Health Organization (2019) reports that dementia is the seventh leading cause of death with an estimated 50 million people worldwide with this disease. In the United States out of one and a half million Medicare patients on hospice in 2016, only 18% had dementia (The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, 2017). McAteer and Wellbery (2013) identified that while referrals to services seem to be on the rise, many are not made until the patient is close to death in the last weeks of an illness. The purpose of this project was to review the literature to …

Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Dustin Kim Apr 2021

Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Dustin Kim

Campus Research Day

Osteogenesis Imperfecta is an inherited disease that has varying stages of severity. The effects of this disease results in a person's bones becoming brittle and weak to where it can easily fracture or completely break. Though this disease is similar to other bone-deteriorating diseases, like osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta begins with a person having abnormalities in the genes that produce collagen in bones. Collagen is an important component of bone, keeping it strong and resilient against injuries. Yet, those genes end up shutting off, and the victim begins to lack collagen in their bones, making their bones susceptible to breaking.

The Effect Of Physical Activity On The Mental Health Of Pre-Nursing Students And Undergraduate Student Nurses, Larinda J. Fandrich Jan 2021

The Effect Of Physical Activity On The Mental Health Of Pre-Nursing Students And Undergraduate Student Nurses, Larinda J. Fandrich

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Mental health concerns are on the rise among the college-aged student. College students face a great deal of stress, which can lead to depression and anxiety. Nursing students, as a sub-group of college students, are under even greater stress related to rigorous course work and the responsibility of caring for other people, which can lead to greater depression and anxiety. This study aimed to determine what effect, if any, physical activity has on depression and anxiety scores using the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 instruments in pre-nursing and nursing students. In this study, physical activity is defined as is “any bodily …

Faculty Readiness To Integrate Clinical Simulation, Jercilla Murmu Jan 2021

Faculty Readiness To Integrate Clinical Simulation, Jercilla Murmu

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Objective: Nursing education is called for reform in the nursing curriculum to meet the complex health care system of the 21st century. The traditional teaching model is inadequate to meet the current nursing practice and requires innovation in education using technology. Lack of faculty and clinical sites has called for alternative teaching methods such as clinical simulation. Currently, up to 50% of clinicals hours can be replaced by simulation in the prelicensure core nursing courses. However, the readiness of faculty to use the technology as an innovation strategy is not well established. This study aims to assess the readiness …

Atrial Fibrillation In Covid-19: A Descriptive Study Of Incidence, Mortality And Related Factors, Diana L. Taylor

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

This scholarly project determined the relationship of atrial fibrillation (AF) occurrences in COVID-19, as it is the most frequent arrhythmia in the U.S. and is driven by inflammatory pathology. In COVID-19 positive patients with AF occurrences understanding the relationship between these conditions could help identify patients with poor prognosis, higher morality, and other factors earlier in the hospital course.

This single-center scholarly project was a retrospective descriptive chart review to determine the relationship between AF and COVID-19 over a 6-month timeline in Chattanooga, TN. Of the 565 hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients included, 82 (14.5%) had AF occurrences. A higher …

Implementing Tele-Coaching Diabetes Education To Improve Self-Care And Clinical Outcomes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Sori Jung Jan 2021

Implementing Tele-Coaching Diabetes Education To Improve Self-Care And Clinical Outcomes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Sori Jung

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) requires initial and continuous patient education for lifelong management due to the complexity of the disease. However, diabetes education is not very well-supported in the office setting due to the providers’ limited time per patient. However, with the aid of technology-based intervention, patients can be more supported and educated, leading to better T2DM control.

Aims: The purpose of this scholarly project was to evaluate the effectiveness of diabetes education through tele-coaching in patients with T2DM for improved self-care and clinical outcomes, including hemoglobin A1c (A1c) and body mass index (BMI).

Method: A mixed-method, single …

Changing The Culture Of Nurse Practitioners: Incorporating Medical Billing And Coding To Prevent Fraud, Waste And Abuse, Tralissa Morrow Jan 2021

Changing The Culture Of Nurse Practitioners: Incorporating Medical Billing And Coding To Prevent Fraud, Waste And Abuse, Tralissa Morrow

DNP Research Projects

Medical coding and billing errors are avoidable problems that have afflicted practitioners for decades. Correct coding and billing are required for reimbursement of healthcare services. Fraud, waste and abuse increase healthcare costs, reduce the quality of care provided and directly impact costs to patients. This pilot study was intended to evaluate the impact of an educational webinar on medical billing and coding, fraud, waste and abuse on nurse practitioner (NP) knowledge using a pretest posttest design. Mean scores increased from 58.4% to 76.4%. Test reliability was low at 0.477 (pretest) and 0.142 (posttest) with two questions that were unable to …

Postpartum Hemorrhage Management: Improving Quality And Patient Safety Through Multidisciplinary Simulation Training, Beverly Mayfield

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary moderate fidelity simulated postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) educational intervention on accurate and timely adherence to a standard PPH protocol during simulated PPH events.

Methods: The study design was a quasi-experimental one group pretest- posttest time series utilizing a convenience sample of multidisciplinary nurses, nursing assistants, laboratory, and physician staff working at one rural hospital with an annual birthrate less than 100. The intervention was an educational in situ PPH moderate fidelity scenario with pre-brief and debrief. Change in performance was evaluated using unannounced PPH simulation drills at three one-month intervals following the …
