Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to describe the steps taken by a team of RDNs to revise a state-wide diet manual and develop a customer focused dissemination plan. State regulations require an approved diet manual in facilities licensed by the Bureau of Facility Standards (BFS). Our state affiliate is responsible for updating the state Diet Manual every five years. The purpose of this project was to 1) gather formative input from users, 2) update the Diet Manual based on evidence-based practice, and 3) create a dissemination plan. Learning Outcome Participants will be able to describe the comprehensive strategy used by a state affiliate to educate members and providers about changes in healthcare models and integration of RDNs into these systems. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) shifts the focus of healthcare from disease treatment to prevention of chronic disease. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) must advocate for the federal and state regulations that identify dietitians as health care experts who can provide medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling leading to improved patient outcomes. Using The Alter-G Treadmill System With An Extremely Obese Female: A Case Study, Shawn Simonson, Jane Shimon, Elaine Long, Brooke Lester

PURPOSE: The present case study examined the potential use of the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill as treatment modality for extreme obese individuals. The special effect of the treadmill reduces ground reaction forces during walking through the use of lower body positive pressure. METHODS: One extremely obese (BMI 69.2) Caucasian 44 year-old female utilized the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill during a 14 wk walking program to pilot test the protocol. RESULTS: At the conclusion of the study, exercise tolerance time increased 3-fold (initially 20 min increased to 65 min) while caloric expenditure increased 4-fold (initially 91.0 kcal/session increased to 442.7 kcal/session) without an …

The Healthy Food Slide Rule (HFSR) is a new educational tool designed specifically for use by school children in grades 4-6. The HFSR teaches the importance of including the 5 food groups and the importance of complying with appropriate portion sizes as presented in MyPyramid.1, 2 The portion size information included in the HFSR combines the healthy eating and physical activity messages offered by MyPyramid for Kids.3, 4 The new tool can be easily incorporated into existing math lessons (weights, measures, and fractions), into language arts lessons, or into science lessons.5
