The purpose of this study was to study elite men Volleyball game as a complex entity that is adaptable to situational contexts. In this sense, situational variables such as home advantage, quality of opposition, match status and match periods were examined as having a possible influence on sports performance. The first empirical study analyzed 65.949 game actions taken from 275 sets played in the 2005 Men World League and examined the odds of winning each one of the five sets of the match according to game location (home vs. away); results showed that the advantage for home teams (home advantage) …

Background: The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the long-term impact of a childhood motor skill intervention on adolescent motor skills and physical activity. Methods: In 2006, we undertook a follow-up of motor skill proficiency (catch, kick, throw, vertical jump, side gallop) and physical activity in adolescents who had participated in a one-year primary school intervention Move It Groove It (MIGI) in 2000. Logistic regression models were analysed for each skill to determine whether the probability of children in the intervention group achieving mastery or near mastery was either maintained or had increased in subsequent years, relative to controls. …

Debate exists on the number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent one mortality with exercise training in heart failure patients. The primary aim of this work was to conduct a sensitivity analysis, removing outlying mortality data from a published meta-analysis of exercise training in heart failure patients. A sensitivity analysis was conducted by removing data from one randomized controlled trial that reported particularly high mortality rates and may be considered a data outlier. Annualized NNTs were subsequently calculated for mortality data from a meta-analysis of exercise training in heart failure patients. The aim of this work was to systematically review the effect of exercise training on BNP and NT-pro-BNP levels in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to (a) characterize the temporal aspects of a popular strongman event, the tire flip; (b) gain some insight into the temporal factors that could distinguish the slowest and fastest flips; and (c) obtain preliminary data on the physiological stress of this exercise. Five resistance-trained subjects with experience in performing the tire flip gave informed consent to participate in this study. The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of the soleus (SOL) H-reflex during rest and isometric contractions at 10%, 30%, and 50% of the maximal voluntary force (MVC) at the ankle joint angles of neutral (0°), plantarflexion (20°), and dorsiflexion (-20°) respectively, in a sitting position. Ten healthy participants, with mean age of 24.9 ± 5.0 (SD) years, height 168.3 ± 8.8 cm, weight 62.7 ± 12.3 kg, were tested for the SOL H-reflex (Hmax) on two separate occasions within 7 days. This study investigated the effects of unilateral electromyostimulation (EMS) versus voluntary isometric strength (VIM) training on knee extension strength of the contralateral limb, a phenomenon termed cross education, in previously untrained healthy young adults. Subjects in EMS (n=10) and VIM (n=10) groups trained with 40 voluntary or evoked isometric knee extensions, at an intensity of 65% of maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC), three sessions per week for four weeks. Before and after training, both legs were tested for MVC on an isokinetic dynamometer, at 0 deg.s-1 (isometric), 60 and 180 deg.s-1 velocities. The results showed that the EMS and VIM …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of patellar taping on the onset of activity of the vastus medialis obliquus muscle (VMO) and the vastus lateralis muscle (VL). Subjects and Methods. Fourteen female subjects with patellar pain walked up and down stairs in two conditions: (1) with the patellofemoral joint of the painful lower extremity taped so that the pain was reduced by at least 50% on a pain provocation test and (2) without patellar taping. The current study investigated the effect of 2 different types of unilateral resistance training on the postural tremor output of 19 neurologically healthy men age 70–80 yr. The strength- (n = 7) and coordination-training (n = 7) groups trained twice a week for 6 wk, performing dumbbell biceps curls, wrist flexions, and wrist extensions, while the control group (n = 5) maintained their normal activities. Changes in index-finger tremor (RMS amplitude, peak, and proportional power) and upper limb muscle coactivation were assessed during 4 postural conditions that were performed separately with the trained and untrained limbs. In this article, we respond to Singer’s (2005) challenge to sport management scholars to consider race-based epistemologies in conducting certain kinds of research in the field, as we use critical race theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card (HRC) (Harrison & Yee, 2009). From the loads carried by the armies of antiquity to today’s modern forces, this article explores and critically analyses soldier load carriage over two millennia. Historical misconceptions appearing in some military documents and literature regarding the context and weight of the soldier’s load are also discussed. The author looks at how, even with changes in logistic practices, technology and the very nature of warfare, the soldier is still a beast of burden and suggests that relying on improved load carriage logistical aides and changes to equipment may not be the answer to this age-old problem.
