Alternative Therapies For Perinatal Care: A Holistic Approach To Pregnancy, Devon C. Neumann

Honors Projects

This paper explores the many of the alternative and naturopathic options available for pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum care and the advantages this type of care presents. The research discussed shows that many of these options can be very beneficial to the patient as well as being more accessible when travel restrictions are an issue, such as in the case of a patient living in a rural geographically isolated area. This paper discusses such therapy options as massage, music therapy, yoga, relaxation, acupuncture, acupressure, herbal remedies, hypnosis, and telecare as well as their implications for the healthcare team involved, …

Peer Reviewed Articles

Background: Although cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, obesity, and several other well-studied unhealthy lifestyle-related factors each have been linked to the risk of multiple chronic diseases and premature death, little is known about the combined impact on mortality outcomes, in particular among Chinese and other non-Western populations. The objective of this study was to quantify the overall impact of lifestyle-related factors beyond that of active cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption on all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Chinese women.

Methods and Findings: We used data from the Shanghai Women’s Health Study, an ongoing population-based prospective cohort study in China. Participants included …

A Qualitative Study Of Role Transition From Rn To Apn, Sandra L. Spoelstra, Lorraine B. Robbins Jun 2010

A Qualitative Study Of Role Transition From Rn To Apn, Sandra L. Spoelstra, Lorraine B. Robbins

Peer Reviewed Articles

Role transition from registered nurse to advanced practice nurse is a difficult process. A qualitative thematic analysis guided the integration of various experiences of 24 students in a twocredit, web-based role development course in a Master’s of Science in Nursing program at a large Midwestern university. Findings supported that students had developed an understanding of the core competencies and complexity of the advanced practice nurse role, and that beginning role transition had occurred. An overarching theme, ‘the essence of nursing’ was evident. Three subthemes supported the occurrence of role transition, which included the importance of: a) building a framework for …

The reduction of infant mortality (IM) continues to be a primary goal throughout much of the developing world, and a suite of methods have been proposed with which to achieve it. However, most attempts at IM reduction have taken place within the context of an almost bewilderingly complex regimen of simultaneous changes occurring in the physical environment, sociopolitical structure, and health care. Which of these various elements is truly causal in reducing IM and which may be merely a correlated but nonprimary agent? During the past two decades Mexico has constituted an extraordinary field laboratory with which to decipher the …

Delayed Enrichment Of Mesenchymal Cells Promotes Cardiac Lineage And Calcium Transient Development, Liliana Grajales, Jesus Garcia, Kathrin Banach, David Geenen

Peer Reviewed Articles

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) can be induced to differentiate into myogenic cells. Despite their potential, previous studies have not been successful in producing a high percentage of cardiac-like cells with a muscle phenotype. We hypothesized that cardiac lineage development in BM-MSC is related to cell passage, culture milieu, and enrichment for specific cell subtypes before and during differentiation. Our study demonstrated that Lin− BM-MSC at an intermediate passage (IP; P8–P12) expressed cardiac troponin T (cTnT) after 21 days in culture. Cardiac TnT expression was similar whether IP cells were differentiated in media containing 5-azacytidine+2% FBS (AZA; 14%) or …

Falls In The Community Dwelling Elderly With A History Of Cancer, Sandra L. Spoelstra, Barbara Given, Alexander Von Eye, Charles W. Given

Peer Reviewed Articles

BACKGROUND: Falls place older adults at risk for injuries, resulting in functional decline, hospitalization, institutionalization, higher healthcare costs, and decreased quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined community-dwelling elderly to identify if individuals with a history of cancer fall at a higher rate than those without cancer, and if the occurrence of falls was influenced by individual characteristics, symptoms, or function.

METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study, in 2007, examining 7,448 community-dwelling elderly 65 years or older in a state in the Midwest. Fallers were identified based on a diagnosis of cancer, age, sex, race and ethnicity, poor vision, …

The Lived Experience: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension And Intravenous Prostaglandin Therapy, Phyllis D. Boone Jan 2010

The Lived Experience: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension And Intravenous Prostaglandin Therapy, Phyllis D. Boone

Masters Theses

A descriptive phenomenological study was proposed to obtain a subjective description of the experience of living with intravenous prostaglandin treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension. It was intended to determine what kinds of elements are common to the experience with study participants, to develop an aggregate structure of the experience from the individual descriptions of it, and add to what is now known about this phenomenon. It was anticipated that the stories told by the participants could help to determine how nurses can assist future patients to live optimally within the confines of a palliative treatment for this incurable illness.

Unfortunately, …

Hawthorn Extract - Viable Treatment For Cardiovascular Disease Or Unscrupulous Herbal Supplement?, Andrea Lowing, Frank Sylvester

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

In the past Hawthorn leaves, berries and flowers have been used in Asia to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and other cardiovascular diseases. It is hypothesized that the Hawthorn extract acts as a vasodilator increasing the size of the lumen of blood vessels by relaxing the smooth muscle. This occurs by decreasing the amount of calcium that is present in the cytosol by either increasing the effectiveness of the Ca2+ -ATPase pump or by altering the Na+ -Ca2+ antiport exchanger. With this decrease in cytosolic calcium the calcium unbinds from CaM causing the enzyme myosin phosphatase to …

In nature, animals commonly experience multiple combinations of stimuli at various points in time. When two or more seemingly unrelated stimuli are detected at the same time using different sensory systems, there is the potential for an association to form between the stimuli. The animal may learn and show a response originally associated with one stimulus when it now detects the second stimulus. These stimuli are the unconditioned and conditioned stimulus of classical and operant conditioning. Many species of animals are known to learn via operant conditioning and a variety of responses can become associated with formerly neutral stimuli. Crayfish …

CEST is a molecular imaging technique that allows indirect detection of protons associated with mobile proteins. GlycoCEST is a variant of CEST for imaging tissue glycogen, the storage form of glucose. With glycoCEST, the -OH protons of glycogen are saturated, transfer the saturation to bulk water by way of chemical exchange which reduces the bulk water signal in proportion to the glycogen content. the purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of glycoCEST imaging in human skeletal muscle at 7T. Our findings, although preliminary, suggest that glycoCEST imaging at 7T can be used to image muscle glycogen.

Evaluation Of Prevalence, Transmission, And Prevention Methods Of Salmonellosis From Pet Turtles In Michigan, Karina Ballester, Edwin Vazquez, Mahdi Saeed, Paul C. Bartlett

Michigan Journal of Public Health

The sale and distribution of turtles with a carapace smaller than four inches in diameter was banned by federal law in 1975 on the grounds that such animals were frequently associated with human Salmonella infections. However, the popularity of these small turtles as pets has resurfaced, and in many places in Michigan they are being sold illegally. This study was conducted in Michigan to determine the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in the most popular pet turtle species, Trachemys scripta elegans commonly known as red-eared sliders, and to evaluate the compliance of pet stores with laws concerning the sale of these …
