Application Of The Andersen Health System Utilization Framework In The Investigation Of The Use Of Traditional Medicine In Kumasi, Ghana, Pascal Felix Jan 2020

Application Of The Andersen Health System Utilization Framework In The Investigation Of The Use Of Traditional Medicine In Kumasi, Ghana, Pascal Felix

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a gap in theoretically-based-research on the use of Traditional Medicine (TM) in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). The Andersen Health System Utilization (AHU) framework was used to explore the factors associated with TM use among chronically ill patients seeking care from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Ghana, West Africa. Two research questions allowed a focused application of the AHU model. The first research question sought to identify the need, predisposing, and enabling factors associated with TM use. The second research question sought to examine the relationship between TM and perceived health status. Multinomial logistic regression and instrumental …

Public Health Implications Associated With The Practice Of Utilizing Tires To Singe Meat In Three Major Cities Of Ghana: A Concurrent Mixed Methods Study, Tempest D. Hill Jan 2015

Public Health Implications Associated With The Practice Of Utilizing Tires To Singe Meat In Three Major Cities Of Ghana: A Concurrent Mixed Methods Study, Tempest D. Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Utilization of automobile tires to singe meat (e.g., cows) intended for human consumption presents public health risks due to hazardous chemicals released into the environment and meat. This has become a common practice in some African countries such as Ghana. The objective of this study was to investigate the awareness and perception of the residents in three major cities of Ghana (Cape Coast, Kumasi and Accra) using the Health Belief Model and Social Ecological Model. Survey participants (n=196) and focus group discussion members (n=37) completed the study. Data collected from study participants included meat consumption, awareness of the use of …

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is often a co-contaminant with aflatoxin (AF) in grains and may enhance AF’s carcinogenicity by acting as a cancer promoter. Calcium montmorillonite (i.e. NovaSil, NS) is a possible dietary intervention to help decrease chronic aflatoxin exposure where populations are at risk. Previous studies show that an oral dose of NS clay was able to reduce AF exposure in a Ghanaian population. In vitro analyses from our laboratory indicated that FB1 (like aflatoxin) could also be sorbed onto the surfaces of NS. Hence, our objectives were to evaluate the efficacy of NS clay to reduce urinary FB1 in …

Background: Although aflatoxin exposure has been shown to be associated with micronutrient deficiency in animals, there are few investigations on the effects of aflatoxin exposure on micronutrient metabolism in humans.
Objective: To examine the relationship between aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) albumin adducts (AF-ALB) in plasma and the aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) metabolite in urine and plasma concentrations of retinol (vitamin A) and α-tocopherol (vitamin E) in Ghanaians.
Methods: A cross-sectional study of 147 adult participants was conducted. Blood and urine samples were tested for aflatoxin and vitamins A and E levels.
Results: Multivariable analysis showed that participants with high AF-ALB (≥ 0.80 …
