Paraoxonase-1 Enzyme Activity In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: Association With Carotid Intima-Media Thickness?, Ahmed R. Tawfeek, Aly M. El-Kholy, Mohamed Z. Nouh, Sabry A. Shoeib, Waleed M. Fathy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives The aim was to find the relationship of biochemical determinants of paraoxonase-1 (PON1) enzyme activity with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) as a surrogate marker of atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Background There is strong correlation between patients with RA and CV morbidity and mortality that cannot be explained by traditional risk factors alone. And this could be due to abnormal function of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). HDL promotes cholesterol efflux, as well as protects low-density lipoprotein (LDL) against oxidation, and this ability has been referred to as an 'anti-inflammatory' function because the lipid oxidation …

Sleep Pattern Changes In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Dina R. Alsharaki, Emad E. Abd El-Hamid, Ibrahim I. El-Mahallawy, Mohamed A. Zamzam, Rana H. El-Helbawy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to assess sleep pattern changes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Background There is evidence that patients with RA may be at increased risk for sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sleep abnormalities have also been linked to increased pain and fatigue perception, which are common concerns in rheumatology patients. Untreated OSA with intermittent hypoxia is associated with elevated levels of systemic inflammatory markers: C-reactive protein (CRP) and proinflammatory cytokines. Patients and methods Thirty patients diagnosed as having RA, and 30 apparent healthy control participants were invited to participate in the study. …
