Using A Healing Wheel In The Healing Journey, Rebecca L. Tadlock-Marlo
Using A Healing Wheel In The Healing Journey, Rebecca L. Tadlock-Marlo
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Mindfulness can be most comprehensively defined as a multifaceted, present-moment awareness intervention that capitalizes on self-perceptions (Gehart & McCollum, 2007; Nanda, 2009). Native American practices can be easily translated into counseling mindfulness techniques to aide in the healing journey of multicultural clients (Burks & Robbins, 2011; Durtschi,Rybak & Decker-Fitts, 2009; Garrett et al., 2011; Turner & Pope, 2009). A Medicine Wheel, or Sacred Hoop, is just one of the many ways to help individuals heal through mindfulness practices. Through the use of creating and discussing a healing wheel with clients, counselors can promote a context for understanding, respecting, and valuing …

Invisible Chronic Illness: Invisible Is Not Imaginary, Rebecca L. Tadlock-Marlo
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The need for counselors to be versed in various areas of multicultural counseling is a requirement to the profession (ACA Code of Ethics, 2005). Providing a basis of counselor knowledge in dealing with the various areas of multiculturalism is necessary to revolutionize how we are able to help clients with various life stories. One of the goals within the ACA standards is to help navigate a sense of empowerment for such clients. Counselors must promote holistic wellness in the often challenging social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual path of comeback. With the rise in invisible chronic physical conditions, the importance of …

"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy
"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
From 1747 to 1765 Scarborough created a safety net to keep its maritime dependents from becoming impoverished. A web of kinship connections that permitted sailors to move between land and sea as well as between maritime roles as they aged; the employment of maritime servants; the extensive hiring of elderly seamen; the use of the Seamen’s Sixpence after legislative reform in 1747 to develop locally operated seamen’s hospitals for the benefit of sailors and their families; and strong community support of the hospitals worked together to provide a social safety net that was, by eighteenth century standards, robust and effective.

Inferencing Abilities Of Children With Specific Language Impairment, Kelsey J. Depew
Inferencing Abilities Of Children With Specific Language Impairment, Kelsey J. Depew
Masters Theses
Inferencing is the ability to make judgments based upon limited information. It is necessary for basic problem solving, negation social interaction, and comprehension of oral and written language. Despite the importance of inferencing in daily life, there are currently no commercially available tests dedicated entirely to the assessment of inferencing. Previous research has demonstrated a developmental progression of inferencing abilities in neurotypical children. However, no clinical norms exist. Additionally, little research has been conducted regarding the inferencing abilities of children with language impairments. The purpose of this project was to compare inferencing abilities of children with language impairment to typically …

Treatment Of Written Discourse After Traumatic Brain Injury, Cassie L. Fuller
Treatment Of Written Discourse After Traumatic Brain Injury, Cassie L. Fuller
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Traumatic brain injury often leads to cognitive communication disorders, commonly disorders of written discourse. Research in the field of written discourse after traumatic brain injury does not provide a strong protocol for improvement of functional written skills. The aim of this study was to create an effective treatment plan to address written discourse impairments in two college students from Eastern Illinois University with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Individualized treatment plans were developed for participants based on the need for improvement in productivity, efficiency, and coherence (both global and local) in written discourse. Treatment was developed based on individual needs and …

Social Differences Of Adolescents With High-Functioning Autism And Asperger's Syndrome, Miranda J. Clark
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study evaluated the social skills of adolescents with high-functioning autism (HFA), Asperger's syndrome (AS), and neurotypical development (NT). Currently, it is unknown whether there are significant differences in the social skills of individuals in these three groups, especially in the adolescent population. This study employed a group comparative design with 5-10 subjects in each respective group. The Social Language Development Test-Adolescent (SLDT-A) yielded standard scores for quantitative analysis that were analyzed using appropriate inferential statistics.
This study found that adolescents with AS performed somewhat better on a standardized measure of social skills than those with HFA. As predicted, neither …

This study assessed whether and how self-explanation reading training, provided by iSTART (Interactive Strategy Training for Active Reading and Thinking), improves the effectiveness of comprehension processes. iSTART teaches students how to self-explain and which strategies will most effectively aid comprehension from moment-to-moment. We used RSAT (Reading Strategy Assessment Tool) to assess how iSTART changes the relation between important selfexplanation reading strategies—bridging and elaboration—and online comprehension, and how often they are produced. College and high school students received iSTART and were administered RSAT prior to and post-training. Results from three experiments showed that iSTART primarily benefits bridging inferences when self explaining. …

Oral Narrative Skills And Executive Functions In Elementary School Children, Sarah Marie Lambeth
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral narrative abilities and executive function skills in typically developing first and third grade children. Several studies have begun to identify differences in executive function profiles of different groups of children, while other studies have determined a relationship between individual language skills and isolated executive function abilities. Few studies have examined the relationship between applied language tasks, such as narrative ability, and functional displays of executive functions. Subjects included 27 first and third grade students attending a central Illinois public school. The current study investigated the relationship between oral …

Impact Of Family Meal Time On College Students' Food Consumption And Select Lifestyle Choices, Rachael Jannusch
Impact Of Family Meal Time On College Students' Food Consumption And Select Lifestyle Choices, Rachael Jannusch
Undergraduate Honors Theses
People participating in family mealtimes ≥ 6 times per week while growing up are known to have a better quality diet, GPA, sleeping habits, and a normal BMI. It is hypothesized that college students with a history of family mealtimes continue to experience these benefits while in college. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the history of family mealtime on diet quality, GPA, sleeping habits, and BMI in a college setting.
A convenience sample of students at a midwestern university (n=100) were asked to complete a 17 question survey regarding frequency of family meals, food …

The Toxicity Of Acetaminophen, Caffeine And Carbendazim In Earthworms (Eisenia Fetida), Matthew M. Bulman
The Toxicity Of Acetaminophen, Caffeine And Carbendazim In Earthworms (Eisenia Fetida), Matthew M. Bulman
Masters Theses
There has been a need for the assessment of ground water contamination risk on terrestrial organisms. One terrestrial organism, Eisenia fetida, was chosen as a test species and exposed to three common pharmaceutical and/or pesticide related contaminants: acetaminophen (CAS#103-90-2), caffeine (CAS#58-08-2) and carbendazim (CAS#10605-21-7), respectively. Levels of contamination varied from grams per liter to micrograms per liter (ppb) using distilled water as the solvent. Eisenia fetida was examined through a 28 day range/index toxicity test. A Benchmark Dose (BMD) dichotomous probit analysis, using a 95% confidence interval, was calculated for all three contaminants. All three contaminants were found to have …
