Chondroprotective Efficacy Of Undenatured Collagen Type Ii On Canine Osteoarthritis Secondary To Medial Patellar Luxation, Susolos Kunsuwannachai, Kumpanart Soontornvipart

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Osteoarthritis (OA) is found secondary to medial patellar luxation (MPL) which is one of the most common diseases in small-breed dogs. Management of the disease is surgical correction or medical treatment. In patients who are unable to do the surgical correction, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) remain the drugs of choice for OA therapy. Nowadays nutraceuticals have become more popular since there are no side effects when given for along period. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical chondroprotective effects of undenatured collagen type-II (UCII) on osteoarthritis secondary to canine medial patellar luxation. Nine small-breed dogs (thirteen stifle …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative articular disease that involves progressive alterations in all joint structures resulting from aging and overuse activity. Leptin and vitamin D play a crucial role in energy metabolism; however, few reports on leptin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in knees of osteoarthritis (OA) has been known. Objectives : To examine serum levels of leptin and vitamin D in knee OA patients and analyze the possible relationship between serum leptin, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and clinical parameters in OA patients. Methods : In a cross-sectional study, 235 adult patients (212 women and 23 men, aged 65.6  6.5 years) with …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of interferential current therapy on ground reaction force and orthopedic assessment score of canine patients with hip osteoarthritis. Nine dogs that met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. Each dog received 3 types of treatment: interferential current therapy (IFC), sham current therapy (SHAM), and control treatment (CTR). The order of the treatments for each dog was assigned by block randomization method. A 24-hour interval was applied between each treatment session. Subjective orthopedic assessment and objective force plate gait analysis were used as measurement of clinical improvement in this …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The current study aimed to assess the effect of using omega-3 concentrate to relieve coxofemoral osteoarthritic pain in dogs. In total, ten dogs with coxofemoral OA were orthopedically evaluated at the coxofemoral joints in order to grade the pain severity. Pain scores were assessed from lameness at walk and trot (1-6), pain on manipulation (1-3), and range of motion (1-4). All dogs orally received omega-3 concentrate (Omacor®, Banner Pharmacaps Europe BV, the Netherlands) for successively four weeks. During the study, they were evaluated for pain scores on a weekly basis. The results revealed that mean body weight of the patients …

Efficacy Of Intraarticular Administration Of Hyaluronic Acid In Osteoarthritis After Surgical Correction Of Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture, Natee Techaarpornkul, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Prach Maihasap

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Canine osteoarthritis is a common disease in clinical practice. Causes of canine osteoarthritis are obscure. At present, nutraceuticals and hyaluronic acid are used for the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. This study assessed the efficacy of intraarticular administration of hyaluronic acid on the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. After undergoing surgical correction of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, 16 dogs were divided into 2 groups, HA and control groups. The dogs in the HA group (n=8) received intraarticular injection of hyaluronic acid. The control group (n=8) did not receive hyaluronic acid treatment after surgery. Lameness score, weight bearing score, radiographic examination and serum …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study was designed to compare the therapeutic benefits of a compound of omega-3 fatty acids from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) (PCSO-524) and omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil on clinical outcomes and osteoarthritis biomarkers (chondroitin sulfate WF6 epitope) in 66 dogs that had osteoarthritis (OA); 39 dogs with OA hip joints, 15 dogs with OA shoulder joints and 12 dogs with OA shoulder and hip joints. The animals were presented at the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The dogs were allocated into two groups randomly. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates arekey structural components of extracellular fluid in articular cartilage. From previous studies, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates have several positive effects on cartilage homeostasis and are used in osteoarthritis patients. Although glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates have some positive effects on clinical treatment of osteoarthritis, clinical results still need to be investigated. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes on lameness score, radiological score, serum WF6 level and serum HA level of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates in osteoarthritic dogs, using anterior cruciate ligament rupture patients as study models of osteoarthritis (n=12). The results from …

Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Animals, Sariya Asawakarn, Tanong Asawakarn Jul 2012

Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Animals, Sariya Asawakarn, Tanong Asawakarn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of calcium-dependent and zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which excrete from many cell types. These enzymes can hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins. The most important inhibitor of MMPs is tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs causes pathological condition in human and animals. This review focuses on structural, role and several reports of MMPs in horse, dog, cat, fish and avian. Over production of MMPs is associated with tissue destruction and erosion of cartilage in equine osteoarthritis, especially MMP-2 and MMP-9. In canine and feline, many evidences reported about MMPs and cancer such as MMP-2 …
