Materials and methods Thai patients with upper removable denture (n = 137) were evaluated for the prevalence of and risk factors associated with denture stomatitis by questionnaire, oral and dental prosthesis examination. Palatal mucosa and denture fitting surfaces were swabbed for yeast carriage investigation. Candida species were primarily identified by colony color on chromogenic Candida agar, and their identity confirmed by colony, microscopic cell morphology, and biochemistry tests. Results The prevalence of denture stomatitis was 52.56%, sub-classified as …

Smile Makeover In An Esthetic-Compromised Patient: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Chatsuda Pawasoottikul, Chalermpol Leevailoj, Niramol Chamnannidiadha

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

This article is a case report of a patient who lost left permanent maxillary lateral incisor, canine and left permanent maxillary first premolar and alveolar bone due to the enucleation of eosinophilic granuloma. Also, the report described how a multidisciplinary approach may improve the esthetic outcome when only orthodontic treatment was insufficient. The early loss of permanent anterior teeth affected the harmony of the incisors shown and ultimately the esthetics of the smile, and was a challenge in treatment planning. The recurring esthetic dental (RED) proportion was used for space distribution. Esthetic crown lengthening was indicated to improve the gingival …

Modification Of Anterior Guidance In Patient With Wear In Mandibular Anterior Teeth: A Case Report, Mathuros Korkerdsup, Chalermpol Leevailoj

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

This case report describes how to establish the favorable anterior guidance in an anterior tooth wear patient. The anterior tooth wear is present at lower anterior teeth with an improper contour upper anterior fixed partial dental prosthesis (FPDP) 12-21. The FPDP was removed and replaced with a provisional cantilever FPDP. The favorable anterior guidance was established using a custom incisal guide table. Final restoration was placed. Periodic follow up evaluation is necessary.

The porcelain veneers were fabricate using IPS Empress E.max®, and used resin-based color modifier as a subopaque layer. The resin luting …

The Use Of A Removable Orthodontic Appliance For Space Management Combined With Anterior Esthetic Restorations: A Case Report, Pasumon Sawangnimitkul, Chalermpol Leevailoj May 2012

The Use Of A Removable Orthodontic Appliance For Space Management Combined With Anterior Esthetic Restorations: A Case Report, Pasumon Sawangnimitkul, Chalermpol Leevailoj

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Spacing in the esthetic area results in an unconfident smile. To solve this problem, many alternative treatments can be used with multidisciplinary knowledge: for example, orthodontic treatment and restorative treatment. The treatment plan should be performed under conservative consideration, while the esthetic outcome should persist in the long term. Instead of using only restorative treatment to close several spaces, minor tooth movement before restorative procedures may achieve a preferable result since the teeth can be realigned to the proper position; it also requires less tooth structure preparation. This case report demonstrated the use of a removable orthodontic appliance to distribute …

Apical Actinomycosis, Chalermkwan Phuvoravan May 2012

Apical Actinomycosis, Chalermkwan Phuvoravan

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Apical actinomycosis is believed to be a nonresolving periapical lesion. The main bacterial species which implicate in extraradicular infections are Actinomyces and Propionibacterium propionicum. Actinomyces has been identified in the body of periapical lesion and in the infected root canal, which is the primary port of entry. These micro-organisms show ability to invade and establish themselves in the periapical tissues. This review article mainly focuses on the mechanisms of pathogenicity of Actinomyces species which play a role in the etiology of apical actinomycosis, as well as incidence, diagnosis, histopathology, therapeutic measure to manage this disease and prevention.

The collagen-hydroxyapatite mixtures were fabricated to sponge-like scaffolds by 24-hour freeze drying method under 2 conditions, slow freezing and fast freezing. The fabricated scaffolds were then cross-linked to …

The laminate veneers were fabricated using the IPS Empress Esthetic system …

Development Of Resin Monomers In Resin Composites, Apiruck Kittichaisri, Charuphan Oonsombat, Chaiyasri Thunpithayakul Jan 2012

Development Of Resin Monomers In Resin Composites, Apiruck Kittichaisri, Charuphan Oonsombat, Chaiyasri Thunpithayakul

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

In 1956, resin composites have been introduced as restorative material in dentistry. Manufacturers have been working on the development of new resin composite by modifying filler particles and resin matrix. Although recent resin composites have been developed for clinical used, the polymerization shrinkage is remained. The shrinkage is an intrinsic property of the methacrylate resin matrix, which results in dimensional change during polymerization. Recently, non-methacrylate resin matrix has been developed to overcome the polymerization shrinkage problem.
