Aim: This study aimed to investigate the similarities and differences related to verbal and social interaction skills between nursing students attending universities in Sweden and China, two countries with different educational systems, during the students’ first semester.
Background: Nurses need a high level of interaction skills in order to interact effectively with patients and their families. Thus, practical nursing education focusing on clinical skills is essential.
Method: Students at one university in Sweden and two universities in China completed the Verbal and Social Interactions for Nursing Students (VSI-NS) questionnaire.
Results: The students perceived ‘Building a caring relationship’ and ‘Caring towards …

Background: Nursing education is stressful for students: an inherent quality of a competitive professional degree program leading to a career where client safety and quality healthcare are dependent on graduates with high levels of intellectual and emotional capacities. In the interest of student health and well-being, it is worthwhile taking a moment to pause and consider what, if any, stressors can be minimized or eliminated. This study resulted from such a moment of pause to consider norms related to in-person timed written tests and how the factor of time might be contributing to modifiable student stress.
Purpose: The purpose of …

Nursing students experience academic, practice-related, and personal stressors, all of which can affect their learning, fitness-to-practice, and overall well-being. One way for educators to support students’ well-being is to foster their capacity for, and enactment of, self-care. We used an arts-based assignment that required students to reflect on the stressors they encountered and engage in strategies to relieve their stress and provide self-care. The assignment also provided students with a creative outlet for managing the stressors they faced during their program of study. We designed a web-based survey comprised of Likert scales and three open-ended questions to explore students’ perspectives …

Nursing education has roots in religious organizations, and apprenticeship approaches to ‘training’ nurses. Over time nursing education has moved to universities; yet retaining the critical practice nature of nursing. As a practice profession, nursing educators have to face the realities of ensuring that knowledge, skills, and values are taught in order for graduates to meet the entry to practice competencies. As graduates, nurses must also have the capacity to assess their knowledge gaps and be self-directed in filling those gaps so that they are providing evidence-based practice to those in their care. Educators must facilitate learning within best education practice, …

Introduction: Increased human health concerns related to the natural environment and climate change are having a growing impact on nursing practice. This past year in Canada, for example, British Columbia reported the highest number of heat related deaths, followed by devasting forest fires in many provinces that have disproportionately impacted Indigenous Peoples. Nurses are well positioned to address the direct health impacts associated with climate change. As a result, nurses require an increased level of ecoliteracy to address the health impacts linked to climate change. The role of the nurse in addressing the health impacts of climate change are vast, …

Background: With the declaration of a global pandemic in March 2020, post-secondary institutions closed campuses, learner clinical experiences were suspended, and teaching moved to a fully online format. Prior to data collection, a literature review yielded few results beyond editorials, student and faculty reflections, and blog postings in relation to COVID-19. It is crucial that we learn from the experience of students and faculty to evaluate the novel teaching and learning realized during the pandemic and prioritize a scholarly plan including potential innovative approaches for future educational programming.
Objectives: The overall goal for this multi-site research was to capture the …

The aim of this study was to compare nursing students experiencing simulations (SIM group) (n=25) versus clinical placement (CPG) (n=55) in perinatal care. Questionnaires on satisfaction, self-confidence and perceived support were completed by both groups. Knowledge acquisition was assessed using standardized course evaluation. The Student’s t-test showed that differences between groups were not statistically significant for knowledge acquisition and satisfaction, while they were statistically significant for self-confidence and perceived support with higher scores in the CPG group. This study contributes to knowledge development since few have compared simulations as a learning method to replace totally clinical placement. Findings support the …

Practice-based, or workplace-integrated, learning is a fundamental component of Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs. The Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model has been implemented widely in a range of contexts over the past two decades as an alternative to traditional faculty-led and preceptorship models. In Victoria, British Columbia, academic and practice nursing partners adapted and piloted the DEU in 2003 as a Collaborative Learning Unit (CLU) model. As with other DEU initiatives/innovations, the CLU was proposed primarily as a solution to increasing demands on student placement capacity and reduced preceptor availability. Over the past 17 years the CLU approach …
