Ethnic And Immigration Status Differences On Child Indicators Of Health For European Americans And Latinos, Christina Granillo, David V. Chavez, Donna M. Garcia, Kelly Campbell

This study examined the effects of ethnicity and immigration status on subjective and objective health (Body Mass Index; BMI) for Latino and European American children. Social identity and comparison theories were used to frame the investigation. Southern California parents were randomly selected to complete a telephone interview about their children’s health yielding a sample of 165 European American and 152 Latino participants. Compared to European Americans, Latinos evidenced poorer subjective and objective health. Latino children who had a caregiver who was a citizen had better subjective health than Latino children whose caregiver was not a citizen. BMI was correlated with …

The purpose of this pilot was to describe the impact of a group teaching preparation on Baccalaureate nursing students' perceived knowledge, level of preparation and level of comfort regarding group teaching. Thirty-one California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) Palm Desert Campus (PDC) nursing students attended a four-hour workshop discussing basic group teaching skills and teaching strategies to be successful even in unexpected situations.

This study will investigate the impact of client variables on in-treatment performance, in a contingency management intervention. Co-occurring disorders (COD) is a prolific problem with the severely mentally ill (SMI) population. People with both severe mental illness and substance abuse disorder suffer greater negative consequences of drug use than do populations with only one of these issues. This can be seen in greater levels of psychiatric symptoms, higher levels of interpersonal violence, and increased homelessness. Drug use has been found to exacerbate psychotic symptoms and relapses in schizophrenic patients, when compared to schizophrenic persons without drug use.

The purpose of this clinical project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management diabetes education program, designed for the underserved Hispanic population in the Eastern Coachella Valley, California. The project was conducted as part of a clinical assignment in the graduate nursing program at California State University, San Bernardino. Thirty-eight participants were recruited from Indio Family Center. In a face-to-face meeting with a diabetic educator, individual participants completed a self-care activity survey and received diabetes related education.

The purpose of this research is to conduct a secondary analysis of data from an Elderly Inpatient Mobility Program pilot tested in a 545 bed hospital. Mobility and ambulation are essential functions that help people maintain their health. They are especially important for the elderly whose functions may be compromised by age related changes of decreased muscle strength and elasticity, bone fragility, ligaments deterioration, decreased endurance, and acquired chronic conditions.

This study examined whether there is a correlation between medical practitioner's level of death anxiety and communication about the advance directive. The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes of local policy stakeholders in regards to needle exchange programs (NEPs), focusing on Riverside Council Members to conduct face-to-face interviews using nine closed and open-ended questions. The majority are opposed to implenting NEP's in their ward. Additionally, the majority of participants are opposed to the idea of harm reduction approach with intravenous drug users. This study may be helpful to anyone attempting to establish NEPs in Riverside in designing a public relations campaign that would effectively address the stigma associated with intravenous drug use, HIV/AIDS and needle exchange services.

The purpose of this study was to identify client perceptions of protective and risk factors that might influence recovery from substance abuse. Fifty clients in an outpatient drug treatment program in San Bernardino, California completed a survey containing both multiple choice and open-ended questions related to protective and risk factors the literature suggested might be related to recovery.
