Trend Analysis Of Physical Activity Measurement Research Using Text Mining In Big Data Analytics, Seungbak Lee, Minsoo Kang Apr 2022

Trend Analysis Of Physical Activity Measurement Research Using Text Mining In Big Data Analytics, Seungbak Lee, Minsoo Kang

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Measurements of physical activity taken in a valid and reliable way are essential in characterizing the relationship between physical activity and health outcomes. Given the steadily growing interest in the physical activity measurement and the lack of research to identify current trends, this study investigated the research trend of physical activity measurement by applying four text data mining techniques (i.e., future signal, keyword network analysis, keyword trend, and keyword association rule). A total of 54,670 publications from 1982 to 2021 were collected from PubMed. As a result, the current study 1) confirmed two weak signal topics (i.e., “validity of physical …

Rasch Analysis Of The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale Among 9th- And 10th-Grade Students, Jane Shimon, Yong Gao Apr 2022

Rasch Analysis Of The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale Among 9th- And 10th-Grade Students, Jane Shimon, Yong Gao

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Rasch Model analysis was used to evaluate construct validity and reliability of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) in an adolescent population. A total of 349 9th and 10th graders (180 male; 169 female), aged 13 to 15 years (M = 14.13 SD = .793), completed the 18-item PACES scale at the conclusion of physical education classes. Responses to PACES items were analyzed using Rasch partial credit model. Of the 18 PACES items, five were identified as misfit items and were removed. The remaining 13 good-fit items (difficulty level ranged from -0.81 for Item #10 to 0.66 logits for Item …

Gender-Specific Marketing Strategies Used By Sports Supplements: A Descriptive Study, Anna M. Cosgrove, Cori Lorts, Lynda B. Ransdell Apr 2022

Gender-Specific Marketing Strategies Used By Sports Supplements: A Descriptive Study, Anna M. Cosgrove, Cori Lorts, Lynda B. Ransdell

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

While the use of sports supplements is common among athletes and active adults, the marketing strategies used by these sports supplement manufacturers remain unknown—especially relative to active and athletic women. This descriptive study aims to describe marketing strategies used, such as color choices, structure function claims, and picture choice, and analyze if there are gender-specific differences within the strategies. A total of 100 best-selling sports supplements were selected from three separate third-party websites. Food products, accessories, and kitchen appliances were excluded. Supplement main webpages and sports supplement-specific webpages were explored to determine which marketing strategies were used and if there …

Development Of The Teacher Efficacy Toward Providing Physical Activity In The Classroom Scale, Erin E. Centeio, E. Whitney G. Moore, Jeanne Barcelona, Hayley B. Mckown, Heather E. Erwin, Alex C. Garn Apr 2022

Development Of The Teacher Efficacy Toward Providing Physical Activity In The Classroom Scale, Erin E. Centeio, E. Whitney G. Moore, Jeanne Barcelona, Hayley B. Mckown, Heather E. Erwin, Alex C. Garn

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

The overall aim for this study was to create and validate an instrument that helps researchers measure and better understand classroom teachers’ efficacy toward providing physical activity throughout the school day. The development of the Teacher Efficacy Toward Providing Physical Activity in the Classroom Scale (TETPPACS) occurred in two phases. First, in study one, after item development and face validity review, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted with pilot data (N = 320) to discover the factor structure of the TETPPACS. Second, with a follow-up sample (N = 192), a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to confirm the factor …

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Factors As Predictors Of Exercise Habits, Self-Efficacy, Social Support, And Affect, Alex C. Garn Apr 2022

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Factors As Predictors Of Exercise Habits, Self-Efficacy, Social Support, And Affect, Alex C. Garn

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Objective: The study investigated contemporary reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) personality factors as predictors of short-term changes in young adults’ exercise-related outcomes. Specifically, we explore RST factors as predictors of short-term changes in young adults’ reports of their exercise habits, exercise self-efficacy, exercise affect, and elicitation of exercise social support.

Design: Participants (N=406) completed surveys related to RST including four aspects of behavioral approach system, behavioral inhibition system, and fight-flight-freeze system as well as exercise habits, self-efficacy, affect, and social support at the beginning of one semester and took the same exercise survey six-weeks later.

Main Outcomes: Changes in …

Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk Apr 2022

Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Teachers’ beliefs about epistemology – that is, their personal broad mental representations about the nature of reality, knowledge, and how people know and learn – have been associated with the many educational outcomes both in the classroom and in physical education. Little is known about whether these beliefs predict physical educators’ value (i.e., interest, importance, like, and usefulness) and self-efficacy (i.e., confidence in performing) for using constructivist teaching models such as sport education and teaching games for understanding. As a result, this study examined path associations from beliefs about epistemology (epistemic worldviews and epistemological beliefs) to value and self-efficacy for …

The Relationship Between E-Cigarette Use And Tobacco Status Among Youth In Public Health Tobacco Cessation Programs, Sophia Brasil

McNair Scholars Research Journal

E-cigarette use is an emerging and fast-growing trend particularly among youth and young adults that has not been thoroughly researched in terms of quit rates and abstinence rates. The objective of this research was to determine whether there is an association between e-cigarette use and cessation rates of youth in tobacco cessation programs. This research, compiled in Fiscal Year 2015, analyzes quantitative evaluation data gathered from statewide public health tobacco cessation programs in Idaho in order to explore the relationship between e-cigarette use and quit rates. This research evaluates data from participants of tobacco cessation programs (N=2127) and the association …

Mythbusting The Common Cold And Flu, Matthew Dillon Apr 2016

Mythbusting The Common Cold And Flu, Matthew Dillon

McNair Scholars Research Journal

As we have created vaccines for many contagious pathogens in the last 100 years, the flu and cold still lack a “cure.” There are many things people do to try to get over the cold and flu from homeopathic remedies to the flu vaccine. While nothing can prevent the cold or flu, there are ways we can mitigate our chances of getting these viruses. By doing what we can to avoid getting these illnesses, we are also helping prevent the spread of the viruses to others. In the end, this is our best course of action until a vaccine that …
