A Step By Step Methodological Approach To Appraise The Quality Of Written Feedback Using Comment Analysis, Lubna Ghazal, Raisa B. Gul, Amina Aijaz Khowaja

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Several studies have been conducted to analyze the quality of written feedback given by teachers on students’ written assignments. However, it has been observed that there is no clear existing method or tool to facilitate the analysis of teachers’ written feedback. This paper aims to document a step by step methodological approach to analyze teachers’ comments and appraise the quality of feedback on students’ written assignments. A self-initiated tool was developed from the comment analysis process which revealed the use of various formats and modes employed to provide written feedback to the students. In addition, this tool helped to determine …

Resection Of Posterior Mediastinal Tumors By Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Taimur Asif Ali, Saulat Hasnain Fatimi, Syed Saad Naeem

Department of Surgery Docs

Abstract

This case report illustrates successful Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) performed on a 45-year-old woman and 52-year-old man presenting with a mass in left and right paravertebral space on the CT scan respectively. VATS has many benefits over traditional open operation (thoracotomy), resulting in less pain and shorten recovery time. However, VATS has higher equipment cost but when an experienced surgeon performs the surgery, better outcomes are achieved. VATS is not common in Pakistan's surgical setup as it is an expensive method of eradicating mediastinal pathologies and not every patient undergoes VATS. The primary objective of presenting these cases …

Child Marriage Legislation In The Asia-Pacific Region, Elisa Scolaro, Aleksandra Blagojevic, Brigitte Fillion, Venkatraman Chandra-Mouli, Lale Say, Joar Svanemyr, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Child marriage is a human rights violation that robs a girl of her childhood, puts her health, growth, and development at risk, disrupts her education, limits her opportunities for empowerment and social development, and increases her risk of exposure to violence and abuse (for a review of the evidence on the negative effects of child marriage on girls and their children, see Parsons et al. 2015, in this issue). While child marriage is not mentioned specifically in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Convention does contain a provision requiring governments to abolish “traditional practices prejudicial …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

In 2015, as we review progress towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), despite significant progress in reduction of mortality, we still have unacceptably high numbers of maternal and newborn deaths globally. Efforts over the past decade to reduce adverse outcomes for pregnant women and newborns have been directed at increasing skilled birth attendance.1,2 This has resulted in higher rates of births in health facilities in all regions.3 The proportion of deliveries reportedly attended by skilled health personnel in developing countries rose from 56% in 1990 to 68% in 2012.4 With increasing utilisation of health services, a higher proportion of avoidable maternal …

Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Fever in children is one of the most common clinical symptoms and a frequent cause of caregiver concern. It is a normal body response to a variety of conditions, the most common of which is infection. Many childhood illnesses are accompanied by fever, which is often treated at home prior to presentation at a health facility. Nearly every child will develop a febrile episode at some point in life. The challenge for caregivers is to know when to be concerned and how to manage such episodes appropriately when they occur. Caregiver knowledge and perceptions regarding fever are an important …

Family Medicine, East Africa

Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions globally, estimated to constitute 0.75% of the global burden of disease, with the majority of this burden found in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs). Few studies from LMICs, including much of sub-Saharan Africa, have described the incidence, remission or mortality rates due to epilepsy, which are needed to quantify the burden and inform policy. This study investigates the epidemiological parameters of convulsive epilepsy within a context of high HIV prevalence and an emerging burden of cardiovascular disease.

Methods: A cross-sectional population survey of 82,818 individuals, in the Agincourt Health …
