Global Availability Of Cancer Registry Data., Asif H. Siddiqui, Syed Nabeel Zafar

Medical College Documents

The availability of cancer registries has significantly enhanced cancer research, especially that related to cancer epidemiology, survival, interventions, and outcomes.1 However, by using publicly available sources, we aimed to map the availability and extent of cancer registry data in each country. We also aimed to test the association of registry data with metadata such as country income and national cancer-related policies. Data from 190 countries were collected from the WHO country cancer profiles.2 We sought data on the presence of an operational national cancer control policy, strategy, or action plan and the presence of a cancer registry. If those data …

The Politics Of Abortion And Maternal Health: A Discussion Paper, Ihsan Ullah, Ayaz Ayub, Edwin Van Teijlingen Dec 2018

The Politics Of Abortion And Maternal Health: A Discussion Paper, Ihsan Ullah, Ayaz Ayub, Edwin Van Teijlingen

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Abortion should be legally allowed for women because it can save mothers from childbirth-related complications and death. Legal abortion is one of the safest methods to terminate a pregnancy when there is a risk to the mother’s health by childbirth or severe deformity of the fetus or it is unwanted. Unfortunately, approximately half of all abortions worldwide mostly in nations where abortion is severely restricted and are performed in dangerous settings. These risky abortions are a significant contributor to maternal morbidity and disability. Limiting a woman's access to an abortion does not stop abortion; rather, it just encourages more risky …

Role Of Stereotactic Radiosurgery In The Treatment Of Acromegaly, Komal Naeem, Aneela Darbar, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim Dec 2018

Role Of Stereotactic Radiosurgery In The Treatment Of Acromegaly, Komal Naeem, Aneela Darbar, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim

Section of Neurosurgery

Acromegaly is a rare, indolent disease due to overproduction of growth hormone. Surgery is identified as primary treatment, but has its limitation, thus frequently requiring alternate treatment options as adjunct to surgery. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has been used as adjuvant and alternate therapy in patients with inoperable or residual disease; or those not fit for surgery. It has shown reasonable results for treating macroadenoma and tumours invading cavernous sinuses with significant reduction in tumour size and durable endocrinological remission. Factors favouring better outcomes include time from last resection to SRS, older age, peri-procedural withdrawal of medication, higher margin and maximum …

Utility And Accuracy Of Primary And Secondary Ultrasonographic Signs For Diagnosing Acute Appendicitis In Pediatric Patients, W. Akhtar, Mujtaba Z. Naveed, Kumail Khandwala Dec 2018

Utility And Accuracy Of Primary And Secondary Ultrasonographic Signs For Diagnosing Acute Appendicitis In Pediatric Patients, W. Akhtar, Mujtaba Z. Naveed, Kumail Khandwala

Department of Radiology

Introduction Making an accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) is vital to prevent the morbid complications associated with untreated AA. This is challenging in up to 30% of pediatric patients which is a significantly high number. Ultrasound (US) has been generally used as the initial mode of imaging in pediatric patients due to the lack of ionizing radiation. Given its variable accuracy, adjuvants such as secondary signs can be used to aid the radiologist in making an accurate diagnosis. Materials and methods Patients between the ages of two and sixteen years with acute abdominal pain suspicious for AA, who underwent …

Multiple-Micronutrient Supplementation: Evidence From Large-Scale Prenatal Programmes On Coverage, Compliance And Impact, Cristiana Berti, Michelle F. Gaffey, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Irene Cetin

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy pose important challenges for public-health, given the potential adverse outcomes not only during pregnancy but across the life-course. Provision of iron-folic acid (IFA) supplements is the strategy most commonly practiced and recommended globally. How to successfully implement IFA and multiple micronutrient supplementation interventions among pregnant women and to achieve sustainable/permanent solutions to prenatal micronutrient deficiencies remain unresolved issues in many countries. This paper aims to analyse available experiences of prenatal IFA and multiple micronutrient interventions to distil learning for their effective planning and large-scale implementation. Relevant articles and programme-documentation were comprehensively identified from electronic databases, websites …

The Dietary Intake And Practices Of Adolescent Girls In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Emily C. Keats, Aviva I. Rappaport, Shailja Shah, Christina Oh, Reena Jain, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) the double burden of malnutrition is high among adolescent girls, leading to poor health outcomes for the adolescent herself and sustained intergenerational effects. This underpins the importance of adequate dietary intake during this period of rapid biological development. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the current dietary intake and practices among adolescent girls (10⁻19 years) in LMICs. We searched relevant databases and grey literature using MeSH terms and keywords. After applying specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, 227 articles were selected for data extraction, synthesis, and quality assessment. Of the included …

Headache is one of the most common complaints in the general population and the most common symptom for a neurology out-patient visit. According to the WHO, the prevalence of adults complaining of recent headache (at least one episode within the last year) is 47%. Despite the large burden of disease, headaches are often overlooked, underdiagnosed and under-resourced. The azygos anterior cerebral artery (AACA) is an uncommon anatomical variant. There is absence of the anterior communicating artery (ACom) and bilateral anterior cerebral arteries (ACA) form a common trunk and travels superiorly in the interhemispheric fissure. It can result in bilateral frontal infarcts in case of thromboembolism. Therefore its correct diagnosis is of grave importance for better patient clinical outcome. Cerebrovascular infarction is a common condition, however simultaneous symmetrical bilateral infarction secondary to arterial occlusion is a rare entity. We report a case of a 50 years male with thromboembolic event in azygos anterior cerebral artery resulting in bifrontal …
