Acute Coronary Syndrome Patterns In The Young: Risk Factor Profile And In-Hospital Outcomes In A Tertiary Referral Hospital In Kenya, Nadeem Kassam, Mzee Ngunga, Mohamed Varwani, Miriam Msunza, Jeilan Mohamed

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Introduction: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) accounts for coronary artery disease (CAD) –related morbidity and mortality. There has been growing concern about the rising incidence of ACS among young individuals globally both in developed and developing countries, including Sub-Saharan Africa. This group’s phenotypic characteristics; risk factors and clinical outcomes are not well described. contextual and regional studies are necessary to understand the magnitude of ACS among young Individuals and help highlight challenges and opportunities for improved ACS outcomes in the region. The study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of young individuals hospitalized with ACS and report on in-hospital …

Interferon Lambda-3 Polymorphism And Response To Pegylated Interferon In Patients With Hepatitis D, Zaigham Abbas, Javed Yakoob, Muhammad A. Umer,, Minaam Abbas, Saeed Hamid

Section of Gastroenterology

Background: Specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near the interferon lambda-3 (IFNλ3) gene (formerly interleukin 28B) influence the response to treatment with interferon in hepatitis C patients. We aimed to investigate such an influence in hepatitis D patients.
Methods: The study population consisted of hepatitis D patients who were previously treated with pegylated interferon for one year and who were spontaneous clearers of the virus post recent superinfection. The SNP of IFNλ3, rs12979860, was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism protocol.
Results: The total number of patients was 64; median age was 30.5 years and 53 were male. The …

Polymorphism Of Hla-Dr And Hla-Dq In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients And Clinical Response To Methotrexate--A Hospital-Based Study, Azra Arif I Ali, Tariq Moatter, Jawed Altaf Baig, Ahmed Iqbal, Azmat Hussain, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal Oct 2006

Polymorphism Of Hla-Dr And Hla-Dq In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients And Clinical Response To Methotrexate--A Hospital-Based Study, Azra Arif I Ali, Tariq Moatter, Jawed Altaf Baig, Ahmed Iqbal, Azmat Hussain, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Objective: To investigate the frequency and distribution of DRB1 and DQB1 alleles in Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and analyze the relationship between clinical response to methotrexate (MTX) and the HLA-DR and HLA-DQ genotypes in these patients.
Methods: In this case-control study, the HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 polymorphism in 91 RA patients and 91 healthy controls was done using polymerase chain reaction and sequence specific primers.
Results: There was no statistical difference in frequencies of HLA-DRB1*03, DRB1*04, DRB1*07, DRB1*10, DRB1*11, DRB1*12, DRB1*13, DRB1*14, DRB1*15 and DRB1*16 genotypes between patients and controls. However, DRB1*01 was found to be significantly more common (p=0.015) …
