Reducing Hospital Noise Levels Through Nursing Staff Education, Althea Sanders
Reducing Hospital Noise Levels Through Nursing Staff Education, Althea Sanders
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractNoise levels can negatively affect a patient’s hospital experience. Increased noise levels in the hospital can trigger sleep disturbance and affect the length of recovery for patients; the increased noise levels can also cause increased anxiety and exhaustion for nursing staff members. Due to a gap in nursing practice related to nurses’ knowledge to safely reduce noise levels, this project addressed if nursing staff education on noise reduction could increase the knowledge among nursing staff members to use specific strategies to reduce noise levels in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting. The purpose of this project was to educate eight …

Hourly Rounding To Reduce Patient Falls - A Quality Improvement Project, Shelley L. Lloyd
Hourly Rounding To Reduce Patient Falls - A Quality Improvement Project, Shelley L. Lloyd
MSN Capstone Projects
Patient falls are devastating. They can result in injury and even death. They also result in extra costs for the patient as well as they facility. Hourly rounding is a simple process that can help reduce the number of patient falls within an acute care facility. Purposeful hourly rounding will help meet the needs of the patient as well as allow the staff member to asses the environment for safety issues. Rounding should happen every hour during the day and every two hours at night. During these rounds, staff will ask the patient about pain, bathroom needs, comfort, peacefulness of …

The “Wreckage” Left By The Covid-19 Passage: Thoughts Of A Palliative Care Nurse, Angela Simões
Patient Experience Journal
Today, according to Johns Hopkins University, the overall number of global COVID-19 cases has exceeded 244 million with more than four million deaths. Humankind is currently facing an unprecedented global crisis. The impact of this crisis on the healthcare system is potentially far greater than we imagine. This narrative presents a series of stories lived by a palliative care nurse in COVID's time to show how the pandemic itself is a form of inequity and health disparities on the human experience. In my previous narrative, written in April 2020 and published in the Patient Experience Journal Vol. 7, Issue 2, …
The Future Of Artificial Intelligence In The Healthcare Industry, Erika Bonnist
The Future Of Artificial Intelligence In The Healthcare Industry, Erika Bonnist
Honors Theses
Technology has played an immense role in the evolution of healthcare delivery for the United States and on an international scale. Today, perhaps no innovation offers more potential than artificial intelligence. Utilizing machine intelligence as opposed to human intelligence for the purposes of planning, offering solutions, and providing insights, AI has the ability to alter traditional dynamics between doctors, patients, and administrators; this reality is now producing both elation at artificial intelligence's medical promise and uncertainty regarding its capacity in current systems. Nevertheless, current trends reveal that interest in AI among healthcare stakeholders is continuously increasing, and with the current …

Patient And Provider Response To A Prenatal Pre-Visit Chatbot, Catherine Urbina, Chantal Marie Marie Muyalde, Sabina Gudmundsson
Human Genetics Theses
Chatbots are artificial intelligence programs designed to mirror human conversation via text or speech and have quickly been integrated in medicine, including genomics and genetic counseling. Much of the literature has primarily focused on participants' experiences and attitudes on the use of chatbots, with limited knowledge surrounding the perspectives and opinions of providers. Geisinger and Invitae co-developed a HIPAA-compliant prenatal pre-visit educational chatbot that provides routine patient education on genetic principles and genetic tests that are performed during the first and second trimester of pregnancy. Thirteen out of 310 patients who completed the chatbot were consented and interviewed to explore …

Patient Experience Journal
To increase fairness and equity in access to rehabilitation services, a strategy emerging from the literature is patient prioritization. Selecting explicit prioritization criteria is a complex task because it is important to simultaneously consider the objectives of all stakeholders. The of this study was to compare service users’ and service providers’ perspectives regarding patient prioritization criteria in two rehabilitation programs. We conducted a multiple case study in two rehabilitation programs, i.e., a driving evaluation program and a compression garment manufacturing program. We sent a web-based survey asking two groups (patients and providers) to individually produce a set of criteria, then …

Occupational therapy (OT) is an allied healthcare profession that is uniquely situated at the intersection of art and science. OT seeks to improve quality of life by addressing occupations, or daily activities that are meaningful and purposeful (Nelson, 2014). In order to accomplish these goals, occupational therapists (OTs) must use design thinking through the lens of evidence-based practice. This artistic creativity paired with well-researched scientific findings mimics the visual nature of this guide, which prioritizes this need for alternative representation of the sciences.
This visual guide focuses on the interconnectivity of culture, …
Language Interpreters’ Perspective Of The Interpreter-Genetic Counselor Working Alliance, Dacia Lipkea
Language Interpreters’ Perspective Of The Interpreter-Genetic Counselor Working Alliance, Dacia Lipkea
Theses and Dissertations
Interpreters are an asset to the genetic counseling process as they help to bridge both cultural and linguistic gaps. For various reasons, their ability to accurately render the often-complex information discussed in genetic counseling sessions is likely dependent on their ability to establish a working alliance and collaborate with genetic counselors to overcome any challenges. Studies in other healthcare fields document the elements crucial to forming a working alliance between interpreter and healthcare provider, but little research has been done specifically investigating how to form a working alliance in the context of the specialized nature of genetic counseling. The goal …
Hospital Security. A Vision Of Multidimensional Security, Augusto Figueroa Uribe, Julia Hernández Ramírez
Hospital Security. A Vision Of Multidimensional Security, Augusto Figueroa Uribe, Julia Hernández Ramírez
Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana
The risks during the performance of work is an inherent situation to any human activity. Hospital Safety is defined as: “the condition that guarantees that the workers, patients, visitors, infrastructure and equipment within a health care center are free of risk or danger of accidents”. The construction of the prevention culture starts from the knowledge of the risks, the safety culture is directly related to the quality of care of the service provided, which is why these terms are of special interest in health institutions. Talking about comprehensive risk management, either, involves determining all the risks that could cause considerable …

We then gave participants medical passages in both their best and worst fonts while measuring reading speed and comprehension. This study was delivered to a population of Amazon Mechanical Turk …
Patient Perceptions Of Access To Chronic Pain Medications, Lauren Amy Durham
Patient Perceptions Of Access To Chronic Pain Medications, Lauren Amy Durham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe 2014 Drug Enforcement Administration’s reclassification of hydrocodone combination products caused significant unintentional consequences to patients with chronic pain. Although a few researchers have looked at the problems that resulted immediately following the reclassification, none have as yet repeated their studies, creating a knowledge gap. Additionally, previous researchers have shown that most of the current opioid restricting policies in place today were not created using a strong evidence-based or ethically inclusive approach. The purpose of this study was to assess whether common factors identified as issues impacting care for these patients immediately following the reclassification continue to affect care standards. …

Program Evaluation Of A Hospital Patient Transportation Service, James Dion Washington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A hospital inpatient transportation process may decrease the time it takes patients to receive care and improve hospital quality and safety outcomes by providing timely and efficient patient handling. Grounded in agency theory, the purpose of this program evaluation was to evaluate the efficacy of the request for transport to measure against hospital objectives. Two specific program goals were to achieve an average 19-minute transport request-to-completion time and a 10-minute response from the time transport request is received when the transporter arrives. Data were collected from a survey, semistructured interviews, focus groups, and archival data analysis. The one sample t-test …

Hips That Harm: When Medical Devices Fail Women, Sophie N. Putka
Hips That Harm: When Medical Devices Fail Women, Sophie N. Putka
Capstones
Medical devices that save the lives of thousands of Americans each year advance at a rapid pace - but some of them consistently leave women behind. When it comes to joint replacements and even heart devices, women have worse health outcomes. Behind this preventable problem is a system that overlooks women from start to finish. Female bodies are different from male bodies, but women are often underrepresented in medical trials for device approval. Women’s participation in clinical testing for devices has increased, but there’s rarely a detailed analysis of performance by sex, and even less information on women by race …
