Serum Undercarboxylated Osteocalcin And Bone Mineral Density In Premenopausal Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Abd El Samad I. Al Hewala, Dalia H. Abo Ela, Eman A. Galbat, Heba A. Esaily, Samar G. Soliman
Menoufia Medical Journal
Objectives The aim of this study was to measure serum undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their correlation with each other and with disease activity. Background Osteocalcin is a molecule synthesized as a prepro-osteocalcin. After proteolytic cleavage and vitamin K-dependent carboxylation processes, it is released and circulates in the blood as carboxylated osteocalcin or ucOC. Participants and methods In total, 60 premenopausal patients with RA and 30 healthy premenopausal controls with matched age were included in this study. All patients and controls were subjected to demographic data, clinical examination, and …

To date, the only published reports of bone mineral density (BMD) in MPS IV involve patients with MPS IVA; no reports exist describing BMD for MPS IVB. In this prospective study of BMD in three patients with MPS IVB, BMD was acquired by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at whole body (WB), lumbar spine (LS), and lateral distal femur (LDF). Functional abilities, ambulatory status, medical history, and height z-score were evaluated. Three patients with MPS IVB (two females), aged 17.7, 31.4 and 31.7 years, were evaluated. Every patient was ambulatory and one sustained two fractures caused by trauma. Whole body and …
The Effect Of Depression On Bone Mineral Density In College-Aged Females, Caitlin A. Cadematori
The Effect Of Depression On Bone Mineral Density In College-Aged Females, Caitlin A. Cadematori
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Research regarding the relationship between depression and bone mineral density (BMD) has produced very inconsistent and limited results, especially in younger females. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between depression scores and BMD in college-aged female students. Forty-six participants, ages 18-24 (+/-1.0368) completed a 24-hour dietary recall, medical history, Beck’s Depression Inventory and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS) and had their femur and sacral vertebrae BMD, z-score, and t-score measured in the Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) machine. Participant demographics were analyzed with descriptive statistics and potential variable correlations were analyzed by partial and bipartial …

© 2016 Anatomical Society. Pannexins form single-membrane channels that allow passage of small molecules between the intracellular and extracellular compartments. Of the three pannexin family members, Pannexin3 (Panx3) is the least studied but is highly expressed in skeletal tissues and is thought to play a role in the regulation of chondrocyte and osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. The purpose of our study is to closely examine the in vivo effects of Panx3 ablation on long bone morphology using micro-computed tomography. Using Panx3 knockout (KO) and wildtype (WT) adult mice, we measured and compared aspects of phenotypic shape, bone mineral density (BMD), …

Adiposity Is Associated With Early Reduction In Bone Mass In Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Nithya Setty-Shah, Louise S. Maranda, Benjamin U. Nwosu

Background: The effect of adiposity on bone mass in the early phases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and adolescents is unclear.
Aims: To determine the role of adiposity on bone mass in the first 3 years of diagnosis of IBD.
Hypothesis: Increased adiposity will be associated with increased bone mass in both the controls and IBD subjects.
Setting: University tertiary institution.
Methods: Height-adjusted bone mineral density (BMD) z-scores of 25 subjects, age 13.97 ± 2.70y, diagnosed with IBD for < 4 years were compared to 24 controls, age 13.65 ± 2.60y. Overweight was defined as BMI of ≥85th but <95th percentile, and obesity as BMI ≥95thpercentile. Severity of IBD was determined by the Pediatric …95
Assessing The Effect Of Sinus Surgery On Orbital Fractures: Implications For Patients With Rhinosinusitis, Rootu Joshi
Assessing The Effect Of Sinus Surgery On Orbital Fractures: Implications For Patients With Rhinosinusitis, Rootu Joshi
Masters of Clinical Anatomy Projects
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), commonly performed to alleviate symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis, may weaken the thin orbital walls which are susceptible to fracture in facial trauma. This study aims to assess how FESS affects orbital fracture risk. Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric heads underwent FESS on one side. The contralateral side served as intra-specimen control. Orbital trauma was induced using a guided weight-drop technique. Both orbits were tested using sequentially higher drops until orbital fractures were detected on computed tomography scans. Bone mineral density (BMD) was analyzed. All heads presented with a preferential medial wall fracture on the surgical side and …

Background/aim: To evaluate changes in growth and bone metabolism during consumption of a gluten-free diet (GFD) in children with coeliac disease (CD). Materials and methods: Thirty-seven children with CD (mean age of 8.8 ± 4.6 years, 21 girls) were enrolled. Anthropometric measurements, bone mineral density (BMD) in lumbar 2-4 vertebrae, and serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphorus levels at diagnosis and at follow-up were recorded. Results: The mean follow-up period was 3.5 ± 2.3 years. The BMD of patients was significantly lower than that of control subjects at the time of diagnosis but not after 1 year of the GFD. …
