The goal of this paper is to show the progression and change of how the media portrays mental health amongst athletes in today’s ever-changing world.
The Influence Of Apoe Genotype On Lipid Droplet Dynamics, Cassi Friday
The Influence Of Apoe Genotype On Lipid Droplet Dynamics, Cassi Friday
Theses and Dissertations--Physiology
Excess lipid droplet (LD) accumulation is associated with several pathological states, including neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the mechanism(s) by which changes in LD composition and dynamics may contribute to the pathophysiology of AD remains unclear. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a droplet-related protein with a common variant (ApoE4) that confers the largest increase in genetic risk for late-onset AD. Interestingly, ApoE4 is associated with both increased neuroinflammation and excess LD accumulation. This dissertation work seeks to quantitatively profile the lipid and protein composition of LDs between the ‘neutral’ ApoE3 and ‘risk’ ApoE4 isoforms, in order to gain …
Role Of Autophagy In Aortic Aneurysms, Aida Javidan
Role Of Autophagy In Aortic Aneurysms, Aida Javidan
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) are permanent dilations of the abdominal aorta with greater than 80% mortality after rupture. Currently, there are no proven non-surgical therapeutics to blunt expansion or rupture, which highlights the need to gain mechanistic insights into AAA formation. AAA formation involves a complex process of destruction of aortic media through activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), loss of smooth muscle cells, degradation of extracellular matrix proteins like elastin and collagen, and inflammation. Autophagy is a well-conserved cellular process whereby damaged cytoplasmic organelles and long-lived proteins are degraded. Cellular autophagic activity is usually low under normal conditions but can …
Mitochondria As Causes Of And Therapeutic Targets In Chronic Post-Sepsis Skeletal Muscle Weakness, Meagan Scott Kingren
Mitochondria As Causes Of And Therapeutic Targets In Chronic Post-Sepsis Skeletal Muscle Weakness, Meagan Scott Kingren
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Sepsis, or the organ damage that ensues after the body fails to properly contain a local infection, is the leading cause of in-patient hospitalization in the United States. Advances in critical care medicine over the last 20 years have enabled most sepsis patients to survive the life-threatening dysregulated immune response. However, a majority of survivors report chronic weakness and fatigue years after sepsis, and the cause of this weakness remains largely unknown. This dissertation work focused first on elucidating the major causes of post-sepsis muscle weakness (Aim 1). This aim involved a time-course study to determine when muscle weakness was …

A secondary aim was to evaluate feasibility/acceptability of this school-based virtual intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 12-week intervention involved text messaging and three pre-recorded CBSB educational video presentations accessed by parents of …
Role Of Vitamin D, Folate, And Cobalamin Deficiency In Mycobacterium Avium Paratuberculosis Infection And Inflammation, Joseph Vaccaro
Role Of Vitamin D, Folate, And Cobalamin Deficiency In Mycobacterium Avium Paratuberculosis Infection And Inflammation, Joseph Vaccaro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-
Vitamin D, folate, and cobalamin (vitamin B12) are crucial micronutrients in human physiology that are necessary for healthy calcium, phosphorus, and single-carbon metabolism. Recent studies have indicated that these vitamins also affect the inflammatory response in ways unrelated to their well-characterized deficiencies. Accordingly, analysis of their effect on chronic inflammatory diseases like Crohn's disease (CD) is warranted. This investigation examines the effects of vitamin deficiency on macrophages and intestinal epithelial cells upon exposure to Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP,) a pathogen capable of triggering CD, to model the inflammatory response in clinical CD patients. ELISA analysis of CD patient plasma established …

For “Them”, Not Us: A Qualitative Study Of Asian American Pacific Islander Perceptions Of Substance Use And Harm Reduction, Winnie Ho
Public Health Theses
Background: Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) substance use data is typically aggregated in a way that not only produces overly generalized results, but also potentially perpetuates stereotypes created by the Model Minority Myth (MMM). This has mutually reinforced a lack of representation and understanding of AAPI substance use experiences and needs. This presents a public health concern that is both excluding them from consideration by the field of harm reduction, but also themselves from considering harm reduction. Disaggregated data shows rising rates of substance use and associated harms that are often hidden or not taken as seriously as a public …

Prenatal Buprenorphine Exposure Reduces Expression Of Myelin Proteins In Neonatal Longs-Evans Rat, Christopher James Grahe
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In the USA and especially in WV, there has been a surge in the rise of opioid use disorder (OUD), and with it a rise in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). What makes this rise in NAS so unfortunate is that the Medications for OUD (MOUD) do not prevent the development of NAS. Although the relationship between MOUD and NAS is still unclear, it is thought that buprenorphine, one of the main substances used to treat OUD in pregnant women, may feed into the development of NAS, which may affect mental and physiological development and cause other health problems. Via understanding …
